Story:
Facing an anti-choice federal government, in 2004, PRCH compiled personal accounts from physicians across the country that underscore the importance of fighting to preserve reproductive rights. This is the story of one physician:
My experience goes back to my residency training at Boston City Hospital. I was appalled by the intermittent but steady stream of otherwise healthy young women dying in front of my eyes from septic shock due to unsterile, botched procedures. There was one young woman, dying from septic shock, who had to submit to the interrogation of three police detectives, 'invited' to see her by the chief resident in order to find out who the perpetrator was. Even though she was dying from a botched procedure, her commitment to other women who might need these services was so strong that she refused to name the provider before she died. I resolved that, at a woman's request, the most modern, safe and sanitary abortion services must be made available."

They do an outstanding job of presenting science facts about abortion to media from physician view.

They serve a somewhat different, but similarly important role as NAF; their membership is made up of both abortion providers and non-providers alike. What they have done, through their focus on advocacy and training physician members to speak out publicly in print and electronic media, is create a community of non-abortion physicians who are willing and educated to defend abortion rights, and abortion providers. This has been very important step in normalizing abortion care.

They have raised their visibility over the past few years. The organization has started routinely bringing its physicians and health professionals to Capitol Hill to put a professional face on the issue of reproductive health. They have a government relations staff that is participatory in the various women's health and choice coalitions and have increased the provider perspective in the reproductive justice and rights discussions.

They have been instrumental in organizing and empowering those on the front lines of providing reproductive health care.

Leadership |

They have a strong director.
R
Their CEO is superb --both as visionary and as a manager and many of the senior staff and creative and effective.

R

Their leadership is strong.
Program Design |

R
They provide excellent resources for interacting with the media, including background checks for reporters and talking points for various topics. They also have a media training course to improve media skills for those of us who want to/have to interact with the media on abortion and contraception related topics.
R
It is an effective public voice because it represents doctors.
N

I think the voice of actual health professions in the reproductive health policy work that we do day-to-day is apparent in how we approach access issues and problem solving. It is important to work with health professionals to know what are the barriers to care they experience in seeing patients on a daily basis. I think they would be better served by a more grass roots organization. Policy makers need to hear from actual health professions and insurance providers about the benefits and drawbacks of doing reproductive health. There are many financial incentives that drive reproductive health and it would be important to hear from the providers who handle those issues.
N
Their doctors are very influential, especially in communities of color. It has had extraordinary success in organizing this very busy group of professionals to be an important voice for reproductive justice.

O

Several years ago they created some "best practices" awards which were brilliant marketing for residency training programs to attempt to win by improving their programs. Secondly, they have an awards dinner every year which is a wonderful supportive environment for all of us who do this high stress work and who rarely get any recognition for it.
Staff |
R
They have a strong staff. They keep documents to inform lobby efforts and they have good training programs.
N
The government relations staff is in frequent communication with participating health professionals in the organization and provides insight on how policy changes might impact health care practice on the ground. The real world impact is often missing from the reproductive choice discussions.
N
They have wonderful staff and leadership with physicians from around the country coming together to serve as provider leaders on reproductive health advocacy.
Advocacy |
R
They advocate at all political levels; they link abortion providers to other members of medical community.
R
They are a great advocacy organization that has a strong belief in what is right.
Field Leadership |
N
It has offered invaluable role models for medical students considering the field of women's health.

Grow Membership |
R
They could widen their membership base.
Finances |
R
They had been growing until the financial collapse and are now undergoing lean times; they need financial stability.
Collaboration |
R
Sometimes there's not good coordination between all these organizations and education efforts should be well defined to there's not duplication of efforts.
N
The culture of this organization is open and friendly, but they are difficult to collaborate with. In fact, they have developed programs in direct competition to other organization's work.
Expand Programming |
R
They could provide information in Spanish for outreach.
N
It would be great if they could expand their focus to include more health professionals and not just physicians.
Messaging |
R
I believe it could make a tremendous impact on changing the discourse around abortion/family planning/reproductive health by hiring a consultant to improve and shift the discourse/language used. Such a person should be expert in translation of medical facts, personal, and public health concerns to the general public.
Increase Recognition |
N
Despite recent increases in their visibility, I think they could be even more visible. I think they would be well served by doing more Capitol Hill visibility work to raise the profile of its members. I also think they should hire more government relations staff particularly individuals who have an organizing background to help organize their members around different policy priorities.
O
They need to bring back their best practices awards for residency programs and do them on a regular basis. They need to raise their profile by becoming active in mainstream professional associations.
More Funding |
N
More funding to expand its reach into every medical school and ob-gyn/family practice residency program in the country would be ideal. This may require recruiting semi-retired providers who are in a position to travel, do grand rounds, etc. (I don't know how fiscally well managed PRCH is, but its work is vital and not duplicated that much elsewhere.)
