Kipp-foundation Story: This is Jason’s story, a 5th grade student at KIPP Infinity: Jason is in KIPP Infinity, and is a 5th grade student. In an interview, he says he wants to go to college. And then for his future job, he is thinking about becoming a scientist. Since he wants to be a scientist, he wants to discover something that no one else has discovered. He also wants to help others and show them what's possible. One piece of advice he would give a student thinking about enrolling in KIPP is that he would tell them to focus on working hard and accomplishing things that they want to, like getting good grades. If something seems hard, never give up, just keep going. One thing that he learned at his school is that sometimes it can be hard to get good grades. If you keep asking for help, you can get better, if you don't, you won't understand. He also said that his school helped him become more determined now than he was before. He now knows he needs to reach towards high expectations, even if it's not easy. (Source: http://www.kipp.org/students/meet-our-students)

Leadership & Operations

F
The leadership of this organization is strong and they continue to stay on point to their mission. They have been very successful in their ability to fundraise but to also be efficient in their spending. They are very business savvy.

Program Design

F

Ability to sustain significant results through aggressive and strategic expansion. They have a highly committed staff and effective program model.

Leadership & Scalability

R
They have visionary leadership and scalability.

Population Targeting

R
They target populations that are grossly under-served by traditional school districts.

Branding & Program Design

R
They have very effective branding and a model that is broadly known but adaptable. Until recently, they have been relatively focused in the students they serve (e.g. middle school urban and disadvantaged students).

Leadership & Marketing

R
Leadership is obviously strong as is the organization's marketing given its brand name in education.

Leadership & Branding

N
They have strong school leadership and branding.

Leadership & Finances

N
They have strong leadership and a base of financial support.

Leadership & Model

N
KIPP has had very strong leadership. They have also been willing to shut down or pull away from schools that are not performing up to their standard.

Programming

N
They make terrific use of ritual and slogan: kids need structure. They get it with KIPP.

Professional Development

O
The strengths of this program are that it provides training for principals and offers them greater autonomy over budget and hiring decisions, provides about 60% more instructional time than a traditional public school. They do this through a longer school day and additional instructional days on Saturdays and in the summer.

Expand Programming

F
They need bigger outreach and impact. Even with major growth annually they are still only serving a small population of school age children in the US.
F
They need to find creative and legislative ways for districts to replicate the KIPP model.

Evaluation

F
They need to evaluate their own schools; some are not great right now.
R
They are too controlling of the message making it very difficult for outside evaluation of their work. This helps with their branding but doesn't necessarily make the organization stronger. Also, they are starting to dilute their focus by expanding the grades in which they focus. This is not an problem yet but could be a problem.

Branding

R
They allow themselves to be portrayed as a panacea.

Program Design

R
Their approach to teaching mathematics involves excessive rote memorization and insufficient understanding.

Turnover

R
They are burning out young energetic teachers. They should improve the retention of teachers to reduce teacher turnover.

Scalability

R
They need a more sustainable and scalable model.
R
KIPP costs more than a typical school, which is a downside as it will struggle to scale. Its reliance on human capital will limit its growth and effectiveness.
N
Though KIPP has grown quickly, the scalability of its model is likely to remain a challenge, especially in terms of finding and keeping the kinds of talented, dynamic teachers and leaders it needs to ensure its schools and students succeed.

Consistency

N
They could do an even better job on managing and supporting schools for quality.

Strategy

N
They need a high school strategy.

Target Selection

O
Critics of the program have pointed out KIPP's high dropout rate. A large number of students do not graduate from the program. This weakness has led to the charge that KIPP is only working for the best and the brightest students and thus not closing the achievement gap. This is an area in which KIPP needs to improve.
