Story:
What can families do to reduce childhood obesity? Read what experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics have to say:
Childhood overweight and obesity is a significant health problem facing families today and many parents feel overwhelmed by the problem and don’t know where to start. This is completely understandable given the complexities associated with the causes and treatments of this condition. However, there is a great deal that families can do to promote healthy active living and support each other in staying healthy. For instance, families can focus on creating a home environment that encourages and supports healthy choices, regularly communicate with their doctors to understand family members’ BMI percentiles, and/or partner in the community to advocate for healthy communities and schools.
The scientific community agrees that each one of the following can positively impact overweight and obesity in children and/or adolescents.
* Eat 5 fruits and vegetables per day
* Get 1 hour of physical activity a day (does not need to be consecutive)
* Limit screen time to less than 2 hours a day
* Limit consumption of sugar sweetened beverages
* Eat breakfast daily
* Switch to low-fat dairy products
* Regularly eat family meals together
* Limit fast food, take out, and eating out.
* Prepare foods at home as a family
* Eat a diet rich in calcium
* Eat a high fiber diet
* Breastfeed exclusively until 6 months and maintenance of breastfeeding after introduction of solid food until 12 months of age.

Impact |

Their grants are community grants that fund small projects that I think are good bang for the buck though they are not specific to obesity. If you made a donation and required that they be targeted for this, you would get lots of obesity results.

They have chapters in every state. Their policies and guidelines related to obesity (as in other areas) are widely used and highly impactful.

It has been a solid partner on the New York Schools Childhood obesity coalition. They have mobilized their membership to lobby for various obesity prevention bills such as menu labeling, sugar sweetened beverage tax, and school nutrition standards.

Grant making |
R
I wish they would target obesity more. I wish that they would allow grants to be used for more than just planning.
Collaboration |
R
They could use more involvement of other organizations on bodies making decisions and more focus on linking clinical work to community initiatives.
R
Better collaboration with partners and building the capacity of state chapters could greatly enhance their reach and reputation.
Limitations |
R
They are too big and perhaps too political to take the BOLD steps necessary for change e.g. soda tax, soda bans, juice tax.
Marketing |
R
They need to turn more attention to this issue and funding will help that.
Neutrality |
N
I don't see strong enough statements from them about truly healthy nutrition. They seem to be influenced by the food industry.
