Prevent-cancer-foundation-multiple-cancer Story: In 1985, compelled by the memory of her late father, Edward P. Richardson, who had died of cancer one year earlier, Carolyn Aldigé embarked on a mission. She founded the Prevent Cancer Foundation with the hope of sparing others from the pain and suffering caused by cancer. Aldigé believed firmly that an emphasis on prevention, not just treatment, could help decrease cancer deaths and incidence rates. Since then, through its research, education and outreach efforts, the Foundation has worked hard to spread the prevention message to the public, spurring ground-breaking research and new ways to reach captive audiences.

Good Influence on the Government

N
Their influence on Capitol Hill is tremendous, and their focus on passing colorectal cancer screening legislation is well known.

Strong Prevention Programs

N
It is a leader on issues regarding cancer prevention.
O
Prevent Cancer focuses on cancer prevention. My comments are on their colorectal cancer prevention efforts. They have created a national framework for health care professionals to connect and take action on colorectal cancer screening, which filled a void. They also have created some very clever marketing campaigns to increase screening rates such as the Super Colon. The prevention research funding which they've granted has developed some of today's leading prevention researchers.

Clear Mission

N
It is very clear in its mission and is both professional and vocal.

Prevention Focus

N
The Prevent Cancer Foundation was the only organization 25 years ago focused on prevention, and 25 years later it is still the only health organization with the sole focus of prevention. Over the 25 years the foundation has nurtured the researchers in looking into prevention and early detection strategies, and now those researchers are nurturing the next generation. That work is unlocking key findings, and then the organization takes those findings and educates the public on what they can do to lower their risks.
N
They are one of the few which focus on the importance of prevention.

Leader in Cancer Prevention Legislation

N
Prevent Cancer Foundation is a leader in cancer prevention legislation on Capitol Hill. Its leadership, particularly Bo Aldige, is well known and respected among legislators. It's Congressional Spouses work is a very effective way of getting support on legislation important to them.

Mission May Be Too Broad

N
Because their mission is so broad, it is sometimes difficult to determine where their priorities are.

They should work on succession planning for the founder. They also need a diversification of their funding base.

N
They should work on succession planning for the founder. They also need a diversification of their funding base.

I would like to see them generate more data about the impact of their efforts on actual screening rates. In addition, I am not sure that they have a transition plan for the time when their leader/founder steps down.

Marketing

N
Where they could improve is in their marketing. Sometimes they make cancer prevention sound as sexy as eating broccoli.
