Theatre-communications-group Story: Did you know that the American theatre sector contributes $1.9 billion to the US economy annually? Learn more about the impact that Theatre Communications Group, the national organization for American theatre has: Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American theatre, exists to strengthen, nurture and promote the professional not-for-profit American theatre. Founded in 1961, TCG’s constituency has grown from a handful of groundbreaking theatres to nearly 700 member theatres and affiliate organizations and more than 12,000 individuals nationwide. TCG offers its members networking and knowledge-building opportunities through our conferences, events, research and communications; grants approximately $2 million per year to theatre companies and individual artists; advocates on the federal level and serves as the US Center of the International Theatre Institute, connecting its constituents to the global theatre community. TCG is the nation’s largest independent publisher of dramatic literature, with 10 Pulitzer Prizes for Best Play on our booklist; it also publishes the award-winning American Theatre magazine and ARTSEARCH®, the essential source for a career in the arts. In all of its endeavors, TCG seeks to increase the organizational efficiency of its member theatres, cultivate and celebrate the artistic talent and achievements of the field and promote a larger public understanding of, and appreciation for, the theatre. In 2005, TCG received the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre in recognition of its impact on the national field. TCG and its member theatres are major contributors to the American theatre sector, which employs more than 131,000 people, produces over 202,000 performances each year and contributes $1.9 billion to the US economy annually. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, TCG is led by executive director Teresa Eyring and governed by a national board of directors representing the theatre field. Impact

R
They improve and encourage the success of nonprofit resident theatres all across the country.
R
They are an essential service provider to professional theatres around the country.
N
They are an indispensible helper and leader to the national non-profit theatre community. Communications both within its own field and out to the larger public are exemplary.
N
Theatre communications Group is the largest, most visible service organization addressing issues within the theater field. For 50 years they have led the field, asking hard questions, advocating (lobbying in Washington, making a case to funders, etc.), organizing, and strengthening the field (e.g. fiscal surveys, annual gatherings, professional development, etc).

Program Design

F
Like Dance USA, this group is the driver of its community, leading in research, convening, professional development, mentoring, and policy.
R
This is a courageous and sharing organization supporting theatres, theatre artists, and theatre administrators.
N
They have done for theater what National Dance Project has done for dance. I am particularly excited about new play development, new leadership development, and ensemble theater support.

Programming

R
Their skill-building for executives and accurate data for decision-makers are excellent.
N
Under Executive Director Teresa Eyring, they have taken a leading role in engagement with the other performing arts fields, primarily through the National Performing Arts Convention but also through the Performing Arts Alliance.

Program Design & Collaboration

R
Theatre Communications Group not only serves professionals in the field, it reaches out to the rest of the community through Art Search, and Theatre magazine. They also provide leadership by reaching out to leaders and practitioners from outside of theatre and from outside the US.

Operations

R
This organization has served the field in a bedrock capacity for many years. Its publications, data gathering, artistic directors, forums, publications and networking are more than commendable.

Staff & Collaboration

N
They have a young, dedicated staff working with a dynamic senior leadership--an ideal combination that brings together experience and knowledge with energy and new ideas/questions. They manage to hold together a very broad constituency (organizations with budgets at $50K to $20M) because they make room for member input and participation.

More knowledge sharing

R
They could share their knowledge more widely with graduate theatre management programs to create better skilled professionals.

Expand Programming

R
They could make more resources available to theatres that don't qualify for membership; perhaps they could create a second category of membership? Right now artists who work in the theatre but don't meet the requirements to be defined as professional are not able to attend conferences and miss out on other resources.
R
I'm sorry they only serve regional theatre and think it's time for them to expand.

Target Programming & Advocacy

N
I think the organization would be served by developing programs for specific sectors of their membership--(e.g. the needs/solutions for a small company can be very different than those of a large one). Also, I think the company can afford to take more firm stands on issues of cultural equity and social issues; this is how they can be better leaders to ensure a healthier field - one that is more sustainable.

Leadership

N
They have limited vision and leadership.

Leadership

Teresa Eyring
Executive Director
Teresa Eyring is Executive Director of Theatre Communications Group, the national organization for theatre in the US. Prior to arriving at TCG in 2007, Ms. Eyring spent more than twenty years as an executive in theatres around the U.S., commissioning and producing plays, spearheading strategic planning efforts, raising money, negotiating with unions, and collaborating with artists, staffs, funders and volunteer trustees. She began her theatre career as director of development for the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C in 1983. Additional posts have included: managing director of the Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) in Minneapolis from 1999-2007; managing director of the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia from 1994-1999; and assistant executive director of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis from 1989-1993. She was instrumental in the creation of CostumeRentals LLC, a joint venture between the Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis and the Guthrie, as well as Plays For Young Audiences, a joint venture between the Children’s Theatre Company and Seattle Children’s Theatre. Since her arrival at TCG, the organization approved a plan to increase its responsiveness to fieldwide needs, accelerate the speed with which specific resources could be accessed to navigate change more effectively, and to proactively tell the great stories of TCG’s artistic and organizational constituencies in a range of contexts. She has also, in collaboration with staff, advanced an effort to transform the national theatre movement into a global movement. Ms. Eyring’s past volunteer affiliations include service as chairwoman of the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, board member of WYBE-TV, executive committee member of the League of Resident Theatres; board member and Treasurer of Minnesota Citizens for the Arts; and board member of Intermedia Arts. Ms. Eyring was named as one of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s 40 under 40 future business leaders in 1998 and as a ‘Woman to Watch” by the Twin Cities Business Journal in July 2005. She is currently active as an executive committee member of the Performing Arts Alliance, is chair of the follow-up process for the 2008 National Performing Arts Convention, is a member of the National Advisory Council for the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh, and recently completed a three year assignment as a nominator for the Tony Awards. Eyring holds a BA in International Relations from Stanford University and an MFA in Theatre Administration from Yale School of Drama.
