Fractured-atlas Story: Did you know Fractured Atlas nearly had to close after 9/11 event, but fortunately with strong support from their Board and Executive Director, they were able to continue operating to bring arts to a wide community: Fractured Atlas was founded in 1998 by current Executive Director Adam Forest Huttler. For their first few years, they operated as a performing arts producer in downtown New York City. In that guise they worked with a hand-picked roster of exciting young theatre companies, choreographers, musicians, and performance artists. The events of 9/11 threatened to close Fractured Atlas's doors permanently, but with strong support from their Board and executive leadership Fractured Atlas reinvented itself as an arts service organization in 2002, with the goal of more effectively impacting a wider segment of the arts community. Since then Fractured Atlas has launched a broad range of programs and services, including the Artists Affordable Healthcare Initiative, which grew into the multi-faceted range of health care options they offer today. Fractured Atlas's fiscal sponsorship program has grown from 6 local groups to over 1,800 nationally, and in 2010 their membership topped 11,000 artists and arts organizations, with an expanded audience of 110,000 through the Open Arts Network. In recent years they have added liability insurance, professional development, and advocacy to their activities. As the only service organization to serve the needs of arts groups as well as individual artists in all disciplines, Fractured Atlas is a unique and vital resource. They value the role that the arts play in shaping our world, and they are constantly seeking new ways to facilitate their advancement. Impact

F
Fractured Atlas Productions, though still in some respects a start-up organization has brought a high level of entrepreneurship to serving artists (primarily) and arts organizations. It provides health and liability insurance to its more than 12 thousand artist members plus the artist members of 93 participating service organizations. In my view its youthful and "no-whining" style and rhetoric in bringing its services to a national constituency has the capacity to change the quality of the dialog within the artist community about how artists operate, what they need, and what they offer.
R
They provide artists with the services and resources they need. They also effectively deploy information and education.
N
They provide thoughtful resources to individual artists across disciplines, delivered in a way that is accessible, responsive, and replicable.
N
Fractured Atlas Productions' programs help artists make art and sustain themselves doing so. They help artists access healthcare and insurance, act as a fiscal sponsor, and provide professional development, advocacy, and more.
N
This organization has helped thousands of individual artists in key areas, including health care reform.
N
This organization is national and has become an important nexus for artist services and resources. They have taken great advantage of new technologies to provide cost effective access to these resources and have become a trusted source and go-to organizations for artists. They are noted for their proactive issue-spotting capabilities and for their advocacy on behalf of policies and legislation that benefits artists and the arts field.
O
They provide high quality low cost access to insurance, professional development, and fiscal support to performing artists.

Leadership & Operations

F
They have strong leadership and, as noted above, a refreshing lack of entitlement attitude as it purveys its services. They have a significantly web-based approach to services and operations.
N
Adam Hutler is a wonderful leader for the organization and brings for-profit experience and skills as key assets contributing to Fractal Atlas' success. He's a founder of the organization, which is always reaching out to prospective partners. The organization is nimble, deliberate in its actions and well-planned. They are great at leveraging their assets in the artist community and strategic in building them.

Leadership

F
They offer incredible leadership at the forefront of critical arts issues.

Youth & Focus

R
They are young and feisty. They are letting go of the artists-on-the-margin niche.

Program Design

R
Based on what I know of this organization, they help to support the existence of small and start-up arts organizations, or those that don't envision a long life for themselves. This encourages innovation in terms of both the art and the managements of the arts, which is just what we need at this time.
O
I don't know much personally about the staff etc. but it seems to be run by a great group of folks attempting to meet a need that has reached critical proportions during the past 2 years.

Program Design & Staff

N
Fractured Atlas is nimble and flexible, with a "close to the ground" approach that allows them to respond to the changing needs of their constituents quickly. The staff is approachable, non-hierarchical, and incredibly knowledgeable.

Materials

N
Fractured U, their free online "continuing education for do-it-yourself artists," teaches core business skills that artists and arts organizations need to be successful. They use technology exceptionally well to deliver services - from an easy to navigate, informative website to extensive social media networks.

Leadership & Growth

N
They have a very strong leader and have grown significantly in a few years.

Leadership & Program Design

N
They are an amazing, dynamic, and energetic group with great ideas and the capabilities to make a big difference in our field now and in the future.

Operations

O
Their services are streamlined and effective; they are also very technologically savvy.

Operations

F
As noted, this is still an emergent organization: beyond its New York membership base, it as yet has real presence only in California. It may have difficulty getting a truly national membership unless/until it has the capital to make a truly major communications and marketing push.

Website

R
The website has too many glitches.
O
They could use some web-site enhancements and provide more access to monies for professional development.

More Self-Promotion

N
They could toot their own horn more!

Geographic Diversity of Membership

N
According to their membership stats, the majority of their members are in New York and California. I'd be curious to know if (or how) they are working to increase memberships in other states.

Scalability

N
The organization has experienced rapid growth and will need to look at the business model and ways to connect with partners that could advance their work.

Expand Programming

N
I wonder if they could solve the service organization dilemma and create a better way to serve the field across disciplines.
