Dance-usa Story: Hundreds of dance professionals gathered in Washington, DC for four days of professional development, networking, performances, and celebrations, read more about the event: Dance/USA’s 2010 Annual Conference in Washington, DC featured a host of renowned speakers, performances from local and national dance artists, and special events at some of DC’s hidden-gem venues. Nearly 400 individuals from the national and international dance field convened for the Conference at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City. The Conference, titled “DANCE Beyond Borders” featured break-out sessions focusing on four topics of increasing importance and relevance to today’s dance field—international exchange, artistry, management, and audience engagement. Four plenary sessions also addressed these issues, including keynote speaker Congressman Louise Slaughter, who chaired the Congressional Arts Caucus and has a long-standing commitment to arts advocacy. Additional plenary speakers included noted director and playwright George Stevens Jr., Jonathan Lowe, Senior Director of Marketing and Promotions for the Los Angeles Kings, and Karen Riordan, President of Arnold Worldwide, Washington DC, who jointly shared their expertise in crossover marketing strategies as they apply to dance. A fourth plenary featured an interdisciplinary panel moderated by Caitlin Strokosch, Executive Director of the Alliance of Artists Communities, with creative artists Reuben Margolin, a large-scale sculptor and artist, Gideon Obarzanek, Artistic Director, Chunky Move, Paata Tsikurishvili, Artistic Director & Founder, Synetic Theater, and Irina Tsikurishvili, Resident Choreographer & Founder, Synetic Theater. Impact

F
They are a national advocacy nonprofit for dance.
R
This is the national dance organization that reaches to many levels of organizations and artists in the field, strengthening all. They offer very effective advocacy.
N
Dance USA has blossomed over the last decade to give dance organizations a strong network and a sense of optimism that we, as managers, can work together.
O
Dance USA convenes the professional field of dance in the US and North America. These convening enable us to reach consensus, better understand our status, and to pursue common goals and objectives. This is vital to the survival of the form.

Program Design

F
Their annual conferences bringing together artists, presenters, managers and service organizations in the field of dance. They have regional offices that work with dance artists advocating and assisting them in their regions.
F
They are an arts service organization.
N
The thrust of Dance USA has indeed, national, giving each region an equal sense of importance. Through their national and regional conferences, Dance USA has empowered its community.

Field Leadership

F
This is the single most influential thought leader, convener, and policy driver in US dance community. Their leadership is key - I am not sure of the status of the organization during this transitional period.

Data Collection

N
Their only strengths are in data collection for an under documented field.

Advocacy

N
Strengths include advocacy for the form. The organization appears to be at a pivotal moment, needing to make some shifts to adjust to changing times in order to remain relevant as a membership organization.

Membership

O
The strength is in its membership.

Diversify Membership

F
They could build membership of more contemporary dance artists and companies.

Program Design

N
Their membership fees are way too high, so this organization is not really representative of the professional dance field. Their conferences are same old, same old. If you went 15 years ago, the same things were said and the same approaches suggested.

Operations

N
This organization is extremely poorly run.

Staff Knowledge & Delegation

O
The staff needs to better understand the field. The new ED (there will be a change of leadership in the next year) needs to delegate and not be the only person who knows all.

Leadership

Andrea Snyder
President and Executive Director
Andrea Snyder joined Dance/USA as president and executive director in February 2000; she will complete her tenure in June 2011 to become a certified personal/executive coach for arts leaders. She came to Dance/USA after creating the National Initiative to Preserve America’s Dance (NIPAD) grants program for The Pew Charitable Trusts, which she directed from 1993 to 2000, and serving as assistant director of the National Endowment for the Arts Dance Program through the “arts wars” of 1987 to 1993. Previously she held a broad range of positions across the dance field: booking agent for Sheldon Soffer Management; executive director of Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians; administrator of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts Dance Department; associate administrator for the Cunningham Dance Foundation; and assistant to Director Muriel Topaz of the Dance Notation Bureau. Ms. Snyder has served on many state arts council grant panels, as well those for Arts International, the Capezio/Ballet Makers Dance Foundation and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. She is the immediate past chair of the Performing Arts Alliance, the national advocacy organization for the performing arts, and she remains a member of the 2005 inaugural Dance Magazine Board of Advisors. From 1995-2008, she was moderator of The John F. Kennedy Center’s contemporary dance post-performance artist/audience discussions. Andrea began as a dancer and technique teacher after graduating from The American University, and later earned an M.A. in Arts Management from NYU. She has served as an adjunct professor in arts administration at The American University; and lectured on dance at the Florida State University (FSU) in NYC program. Ms. Snyder is also an alumna of the James P. Shannon Leadership Institute and recipient of the 2001 Congress on Research in Dance Award. A comprehensive chapter in Renata Celichowska’s recent book, Seven Statements of Survival, profiles Andrea’s life/career in dance.
