Arts-education-partnership Story: What do the arts benefit student achievement, learn more from a report that the Arts Education Partnership published: The research compendium Critical Links provides critical evidence linking study of the arts with student achievement and success. Based on the findings, the compendium identified six major types of benefits associated with study of the arts and student achievement: Reading and language skills, mathematics skills, thinking skills, social skills, motivation to learn, and positive school environment. Certain forms of arts instruction enhance and complement basic reading skills, language development and writing skills. For example, dance has been employed to develop reading readiness in very young children, and the study of music has provided a context for teaching language skills. Or an analysis conducted of multiple studies confirms the finding that students who take music classes in high school are more likely to score higher on standardized mathematics tests such as the SAT. One explanation is musical training in rhythm emphasizes proportion, patterns and ratios expressed as mathematical relations. Impact

F
They have produced a number of critical reports that have moved the national field of arts education forward by leaps and bounds. Publications such as Champions of Change and 3rd Space have helped the field of arts education advocates to discuss the benefits of arts education and understand how to frame and develop their own research efforts.
F
Arts education is certainly one of the most important issues facing our sector. But it is a notoriously complex, fractious, and fractured field. Arts Education Partnership has been the major entity trying to provide national leadership and perspective in this area. It has authored materials such as Champions of Change and other research efforts, and provides a place where the multiple players in this field: funders, researchers, teachers, and administrators can come together. It is one of the few places where this happens.
R
The Arts Education Partnership works at the national level around issues of the arts and education. They convene stakeholders at the national level, bringing together people and discussing issues that would not otherwise be addressed. While there are others who do similar work in arts education, they are focused at the state or local level, or are focused on a specific artistic discipline. This organization contributes meaningful work by providing advocacy and policy guidance in a way that no one else does. Before this organization was formed, there was no one guiding policy/advocacy work in arts education at the national, multidisciplinary level.
N
It brings together all the organizations across the country interested in supporting and advocating for arts education.
N
They have made a tremendous impact on arts education policy in only 12 years of its existence. They do high quality work, sees expertise through partnerships, and is focused on making positive changes in arts education for the nation. It has supported many good publications and encourages meaningful research so important to foundations, legislation, and funding. It is partially a government agency so its funding runs through unique channels.

Collaboration

F
The network of this organization is quite impressive connecting all manners of arts advocates from foundations to local community organizations and its capacity to create research of value to the field is another asset.

Funding

F
They have had consistent funding from the NEA and the Department of Education.

Program Design

F
They are THE go-to national arts education organization.
F
This is absolutely the organization referenced by other experts in the field as the principal leader.

Partnerships

R
The partnership aspect of the Arts Education Partnership is one of its greatest strengths - over 30 other organizations are involved in guiding the core work and hundreds of others are actively involved in their convening. There are significant people/organizations involved in the Arts Education Partnership (US Department of Education, National Endowment for the Arts, music/dance/art/theatre teacher associations, networks of education and arts organizations, etc.) who work on arts education issues through this group.

Lobbying

R
This group has incorporated artists/musicians in extremely varied genres. They have been open and engaged in teaching and learning strategies that will more effectively reach students in the arts. They have mentored the artists themselves as well as the teachers who work with students. They are very good at lobbying for the value that arts bring to a good general education and the arts as enablers for academic learning.

Strategy

R
The Arts Education Partnership is finishing a strategic planning process. They are well positioned right now to receive an influx of funds that would enable them to move forward quickly and effectively with this new plan.

Staff & Research

N
It has a knowledgeable senior staff that is well respected by its peers across the country. They conduct and maintain valuable research information that supports the arts education field.

Operations & Programming

N
It has a streamlined staff, marketing, operations, and financial structure. It produces high quality work on a limited budget. It surrounds itself with professionals who can lend expertise as needed to various issues and topics of concern. It conducts three forums a year to disseminate arts education information, research, and federal positions on US legislation, policy and funding. It is an important liaison organization that helps unite the field at national, state, and local levels.

Target audience

F
The organization could improve in its capacity to address the needs of certain child populations in arts education and the leadership could improve in its capacity to develop an agenda that excites the field.

More Impact

F
This organization has not reached its potential because it is under resourced and has not used its national position to build more of a leadership role in arts education. There are a great many arts education efforts that are part of other national organizations such as Americans for the Arts, Music Educators National Conference, NAEA, and many others. Private arts and education funders have an arts education interest group. I would like to see this organization create more public sector/private sector partnerships in arts education and provide stronger leadership nationally.

Field Leadership

F
This organization produces quality research, but could benefit the field in greater ways if it would unapologetically take on the mantle of national leadership.

Capacity & Funding

R
The Arts Education Partnership has a small staff (less than 5), which limits the amount of work that they can accomplish. Secondly, what nonprofit doesn't need to improve their financial resources?
N
It needs to build infrastructure and, again, without solid funding, it is hard to build infrastructure with not being able to provide competitive salaries to attract and retain competent staff.

Communications

R
Please let the larger world know what you do!! Engage professional managers who "get" your message; they are proven fund raisers and have excellent financial management skills. Your work is too important to be trusted to those with lesser skills. Your multi-disciplinary focus can change the world and develop bridges between people and cultures!

Research

R
They have a broad reach and are very active but the quality of their research is questionable. I would like to see them work more closely with professional organizations in the field that include researchers from top universities.

Capacity

N
Arts Education Partnership is a small organization. It would be great if it could have more staff.
