Story:
Adult services through the SW MN PIC are provided to assist individuals and families with job and career exploration assistance, education, training and family support. Services through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) are designed to help individuals obtain skills needed for employment. Training is provided in reading, math, job and life skills. Dislocated Worker services are designed to help individuals who have lost their job through no fault of their own obtain training to expand re-employment opportunities and help secure new employment. These include: education and job placement assistance and workshops, career and financial counseling, paid work experiences, help with resumes, applications and interviews. The Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) is a work-focused welfare reform program for low-income families with children, and provides both cash and food assistance. Most families first participate in the Diversionary Work Program (DWP), in order to help parents go immediately to work, rather than receiving welfare. DWP is a short-term, work-focused program that provides families with four consecutive months of intensive employment and training services in a 12 month period. Benefits include housing and utility costs, phone allowance and cash for personal needs. The Food Support Employment and Training Program (FSET) is a county-administered, federal program that assists families and individuals with low incomes purchase food to better meet their nutritional needs. The goal of the FSET program is to assist individuals with gaining employment skills and to help them become employed. The SW MN Private Industry Council provides employment services for participants in the food support program to help them achieve or maintain independence. Participants may participate in training for job seeking, group and individual job search activities, remedial literacy or other adult basic education, English language training, short-term vocational or technical training, job placement and assistance with transportation or other support services. This year, the SW MN PIC also responded to several dislocation events throughout the region, affecting hundreds of workers at Bayliner Marine Corp. in Pipestone, Farley's & Sathers Candy Company in Round Lake, and the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton.

Seek additional resources for infrastructure |
O
SW MN PIC would benefit from resources for their infrastructure, because their resources decline with the population while the geographic area they cover does not. | ||
