Mission: The Youth Justice Coalition (YJC) is working to build a youth-led movement to challenge race, gender and class inequality in the Los Angeles County juvenile injustice system. We are working to transform a system that has ensured the massive lock-up of people of color, widespread police violence, corruption and distrust between police and communities, violation of youth and communities’ Constitutional rights, and the build-up of the world’s largest prison system. We use direct action organizing, advocacy, political education and activist arts to mobilize youth, and their allies – both in the community and within government – to bring about change.

Story:
The YJC’s most significant accomplishments over the past five years include:(a) In 2003, the YJC worked with the L.A. Archdiocese to close the inhumane confinement of youth on a juvenile module at County Jail which included 231/2 hour lock-down in single-cells, no access to education, and sun for one hour every two weeks in cages on the roof.
(b) The YJC partnered with Human Rights Watch and several human rights lawyers to sponsor a bill to give people who were sentenced as youth to Life Without Parole an opportunity for review of their cases (five years ago). The first bill died in the Senate, but during the past year, Senate Bill 399 made it through the Senate and nearly passed the Assembly with only 2 votes shy of the needed majority. The bill will be re-introduced in 2011.
(c) The YJC’s original goal was to reduce detention and incarceration in L.A. by 75% within ten years. To date the juvenile hall population has decreased by 24%, the Probation camp population by 19%, and the California Youth Authority/Division of Juvenile Justice population by 50%, including working with a few advocacy and organizing groups throughout the state to close half of the CYA/DJJ sites.

YJC is organizing affected people to take a strong position against gang injunctions. This leadership allows allies the space to support the youth and young adults being targeted, rather than being in the awkward position of being unaffected leaders. They are also very dynamic, paying attention to media tools that target their base. Their young speakers and organizers do well in larger spaces. They have a base only limited by the number of youth, and People of Color, so as many organizers as they can recruit (staff or volunteers): all can be put to work. | ||
