Story:
At NDS, each client is represented by a team, rather than by an individual attorney. NDS defense teams are made up of attorneys, investigators, social workers, team administrators, and often law school and social work interns. We strive to provide the best possible services to our clients by combining the knowledge, skills, and attention of all of the team members. We devote significant resources to investigators to help our lawyers vigorously defend our clients.
Understanding that social and economic needs often motivate criminal behavior, our social workers also provide intensive services for our clients including advocacy for alternatives to incarceration, educational support, psychiatric and psychological referrals, and drug treatment placements.
Team administrators act as the lynchpins that hold the teams together, coordinating between attorneys, clients, their families, the courts, and outside social service providers. Our criminal defense teams also work closely with other NDS programs, including Pre-Arrest Services, Immigration Services Project, and Civil Legal Representation, to ensure that our clients receive effective and efficient legal representation.

NDS has pioneered holistic, team-based criminal defense lawyering that addresses a range of client needs that arise when a criminal case is initiated against the client. It continues to do high quality work and develop innovative programs that make an impact in NYC and serve as a model for other organizations nationally despite setbacks in funding over the course of the last fifteen years. It is now on a much stronger financial footing and has rebuilt its staff with very well credentialed lawyers and ancillary staff.

N
Ideally, it would be larger and have more capacity to represent Harlem residents. They could also have a greater policy presence.
More Consistent Sources of Funding |
O

The organization could stand to have a more visible executive staff and weed out burned out attorneys. It can also always use more funding to insure that innovative programs such as the Fatherhood Program and Reentry Project remain viable over the long term and don't depend on short-term grants.
Stronger Influence on Policy |
N
They should move into policy space.
