Mission: Georgia Justice Project (GJP) breaks the cycle of poverty by defending the indigent criminally accused and, win or lose, standing with them as they rebuild their lives. With over 25 years of experience, GJP has developed a comprehensive suite of services, coupling holistic legal defense and social services with advocacy support, to address the barriers to economic stability faced by the criminally accused. For the duration of their history, Georgia Justice Project has been located in the heart of the Martin Luther King, Jr. district near downtown Atlanta.

Georgia-justice-project-gjp-georgia Story: Employment is critical to the success of GJP clients and our low recidivism rates.  That is why, for many years, we operated our own landscaping company (NHL) to give clients a paycheck, work experience, and on-the-job training.  But with changes in the economy (and the lawn service business) in recent years, we have had to close NHL and redirect our resources toward a broader approach to employment support.  GJP's WorkMatters program is a comprehensive effort to remove the many barriers that our clients have to employment.  Led by a job developer and our social services team, and supported by partnerships at nonprofits and small-businesses around the city, WorkMatters serves more GJP clients (including women) than NHL did, and is more cost-effective.

“At Georgia justice Project, they’re not going to just roll out the red carpet. You’re going to have to do, too. They set you up with all the resources, but it’s up to you to take advantage of the opportunity. I went to rehab, they helped me get a job, and I’ve never looked back. Now I’m married, own my own business, and I can give my time to others.” - Leo, GJP client for 14 years.

Through its delivery of holistic services coupled with policy change, GJP demonstrates the following results that support economic stability:
  • First-rate legal defense. Fewer than 5% of GJP clients receive further time in jail or prison. The nationwide rate is over 70%.
  • Greatly lower recidivism rate. Nationally, 66% of those released find their way back to prison within 3 years. GJP’s rate is less than 20%.
  • Cost effective. GJP serves clients for less than $3000 per person. In Georgia, the cost to incarcerate someone is $18,000 each year. Even diversionary courts – like drug courts – are more costly: $5,200.
  • GJP is redrafting the state’s expungement statute so those not convicted of a crime do not face barriers to jobs or housing.
Together, these outcomes help lift Georgia’s criminally accused out of poverty.
