Story: It began with a dog kennel, an aging ambulance and a telephone. The year was 1907. The visionary was San Anselmo resident Ethel Tompkins and a group of concerned citizens who wanted to do something about lost and abused animals. Her revolutionary ideas laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most progressive and influential humane societies in the United States – The Marin Humane Society. Today, nearly 100 staff and 800 volunteers care for nearly 9,000 homeless animals each year and assist all of Marin’s residents with their animal needs. The Marin Humane Society reunites hundreds of lost animals with their owners, assists seniors and the disabled with pet care, offers humane educational outreach programs, and places 98 percent of animals available for adoption into new homes. The Marin Humane Society is supported entirely by donations and bequests, and operates as a non-profit, charitable organization. As the Society surpasses 100 years of community service, we are looking back at where we have been as we plan for where we are going.

For as long as she can remember, Nancy has had a deep love and respect for animals. Growing up in Washington State, her family took in many stray and abandoned pets throughout the years. Her companion animals—past and present—have inspired in her a deep commitment to the welfare of all animals and have guided her throughout her professional career. Nancy’s career in animal welfare began in 1983 as the public relations coordinator for the Humane Society for Seattle/King County. By the summer of 1986, she was asked to become the organization’s CEO, a position she held for 19 years. In 2006, Nancy was appointed the first executive director of the Petfinder.com Foundation. The non-profit Foundation was established in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to assist animal welfare agencies with direct funding and training and education grants. In 2008, Nancy began working for King County Animal Care and Control, developing outreach plans and communications strategy, and eventually stepping into the interim position of acting manager. Nancy earned her undergraduate degree from Brown University and a master’s degree in Not-for-Profit Leadership from Seattle University. She is past president of the Washington State Federation of Animal Care and Control Agencies, and past president and treasurer of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators (SAWA). She currently serves on the board of directors for the Washington State Federation of Animal Care and Control Agencies, the Editorial Advisory Committee for the New Pet Parent Guide, and recently served on the American Humane Association’s Animal Protection Advisory Committee. Nancy joined the Marin Humane Society as its Chief Executive Officer in March 2011. She and her husband Jim currently share their home with two adopted cats, Fiona and Leo. They have always had shelter pets as family members, despite that fact that Jim is allergic to animals.
