Mission: Catholic Relief Services carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. We are motivated by the Gospel of Jesus Christ to cherish, preserve and uphold the sacredness and dignity of all human life, foster charity and justice, and embody Catholic social and moral teaching as we act to:
- Promote human development by responding to major emergencies, fighting disease and poverty, and nurturing peaceful and just societies; and,
- Serve Catholics in the United States as they live their faith in solidarity with their brothers and sisters around the world.
As part of the universal mission of the Catholic Church, we work with local, national and international Catholic institutions and structures, as well as other organizations, to assist people on the basis of need, not creed, race or nationality.

Story:
Clean water means better health, especially for young children. In emergency situations, access to clean water and a functioning sanitation infrastructure enables people to stay healthy while they cope during these stressful periods. Better water management in normal times allows communities to sustain or even improve the quantity and quality of their water sources, which means higher crop yields and healthier animals.
CRS partners with groups ranging from local governments and community water associations to international organizations such as Caritas on projects designed to improve water supplies for domestic, productive, and environmental purposes in the poorest of the world’s communities. Guided by the belief that everyone has the right to live a healthy, productive life with dignity, we help the poor gain access to adequate water for drinking, hygiene and sanitation, agriculture, industry, and other uses. In 2008, some 80 CRS projects East Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia, and Southeast Asia focused at least in part on water and sanitation.

Catholic Relief Services has integrated WASH into their work with other development sectors such as HIV/AIDS, education, agriculture, environmental conservation and security. Through their work in Madagascar with Conservation International, CRS has paved the way for collaborative work with other sectors both internally and externally. As many organizations do in development, they have created and tested HIV Home Based Care and WASH manuals to improve the conditions and life expectancy of people living with HIV and those surrounding them.

CRS has longevity in most of the places they have worked, it would be beneficial to them internally as well as for the entire WASH sector if they could look back and assess their impact from the time of the initial project until now.

The weaknesses, and why I struggle to provide a blanket rating, is that they are so large, each country-level office almost need to be rated as it's own organization. In some countries I've been deeply impressed with their philosophy, strategies, and results, while in others extremely disappointed. Decentralization is critical for large agencies like this, especially in order to allow programs to be contextual and relevant in each region, however, the disparity in program quality suggests that a universal set of guiding principles and best practices could be applied more effectively across these organizations along with systems for accountability to ensure they are being followed.
Strengthen Program/Policy Linkages & Links with Networks |
N
They can improve by strengthening their program/policy linkages and links with networks/consortia - particularly around advocacy and policy work.
Build Institutional Expertise |
O
They need to build institutional expertise.
More Focus Given to WASH Programs |
F
The organization could do a better job highlighting and giving focus to WASH efforts. WASH efforts currently get lumped in with all other efforts of the organization. Organization fails to provide a special face and focus for these issues on web and other promotional materials. Also, the staffing structure could be better focused around WASH issues. Volunteer could be better organized and optimized to help support the organizations efforts.
