V-day
Headquarters Location: New York, NY
Founded: 1998

Mission: V-Day is an organized response against violence toward women. V-Day is a vision: We see a world where women live safely and freely. V-Day is a demand: Rape, incest, battery, genital mutilation and sexual slavery must end now. V-Day is a spirit: We believe women should spend their lives creating and thriving rather than surviving or recovering from terrible atrocities. V-Day is a catalyst: By raising money and consciousness, it will unify and strengthen existing anti-violence efforts. Triggering far-reaching awareness, it will lay the groundwork for new educational, protective, and legislative endeavors throughout the world. V-Day is a process: We will work as long as it takes. We will not stop until the violence stops. V-Day is a day. We proclaim Valentine's Day as V-Day, to celebrate women and end the violence. V-Day is a fierce, wild, unstoppable movement and community. V-day Story: In late 2001, V-Day launched a campaign called “Afghanistan Is Everywhere” through which V-Day 2002 Organizers from the Worldwide and College Campaigns were asked to provide information at their events about the plight of the women in Afghanistan who had no civil or human rights under the Taliban at that time. They were also encouraged to donate a percentage of their proceeds to Afghan women. The campaign, ‘Afghanistan Is Everywhere,’ focused on Afghan women with the broader intention to unite women worldwide by pointing out the similarities between the experiences of the women of Afghanistan and those of women and girls in other areas of the world and raised over $250,000 for the women of Afghanistan, opening schools and orphanages and providing education and healthcare. The success of that campaign evolved into what is now the annual V-Day Spotlight. Each year V-Day spotlights a particular group of women who are experiencing violence with the goal of raising awareness and funds to put a worldwide media spotlight on this area and to aide groups on the ground who are addressing it. In 2012, V-Day's Spotlight Campaign will be on the Women and Girls of Haiti.

Expert Reviews of V-Day

Evidence of Impact Summary:

V-Day fills a unique niche in the violence against women arena. Through its many events the organization engages populations that are in many ways unlikely to connect to the movement; through these they build awareness grow the movement. Experts point to their high volume of media attention as huge organizational impact. They are also a large fundraising force, raising money for programming around the world. One expert pointed out V-Day's unique ability to frame the violence against women discussion in a way that condemns violence but still celebrates women's sexuality.

Organization Strengths Summary:

Experts agree that the unique, creative model of V-Day is a particular strength. Raising funds through performances not only bridges art and activism, but it serves as a public education tool. Tied to this model is V-Day's stellar fundraising abilities, another strength pointed out by experts. Experts also point to V-Day's dedicated leadership, strong marketing, and overall creativity.
See expert comments.

Areas for Improvement Summary:

Experts agree that the organization's powerful leader is a help and a hindrance. V-Day may be too dependent on her leadership and this may be inhibiting strategic growth. They would do well to implement more strategic planning. Likewise, the model helpful but has strong western branding. The language barrier and somewhat sexual messaging make it difficult for many organizations to partner with them. Experts also assert that V-Day would do well to increase advocacy in Washington, DC, and build up its capacity internationally.

Engages New Audiences

N
As a global epidemic entrenched in silence and cultural norms, violence against women requires a nuanced public outcry, constituency-building at a broad scale, a shift in values/consciousness/behavior, and a major investment in resources for both local-level interventions and mass-media campaigns. V-Day is one of the only organizations I have ever seen be able to truly stake the claim to these accomplishments: mobilizing hundreds of thousands as community organizers of powerfully emotional awareness-raising events. combining art and activism and earned media. reaching across the globe to audiences young and old. and using an incredible combination of humor and pathos to reach people who might think they are otherwise unaffected by violence and make them feel the outcry, too. The brilliance of this is that it succeeds at celebrating and defending women's sexuality while condemning sexual violence. quashing the typical backlash against women's sexual activity that often accompanies public stories about rape, harassment, or abuse. V-Day has been empowering to women at a personal and political level, providing women a mouthpiece to express solidarity, indignant and outcry against VAW in local settings (of every country) as much as in specific international contexts such as Iraq, Haiti, and the DRC, and against our individual selves.
O
V-Day has had a unique impact with regard to engaging new audiences and new financial resources to the fight to end violence against women around the world. The amount of media attention, funds and partnerships that were generated by V-Day in its now 13 years of existence are unparalleled.
F
V-day has proven uniquely effective at engaging US youth and other audiences in the global movement to address violence against women. V-Day has also identified effective and important in-country partners for its work overseas.

Powerful Fundraising

F
V-Day offers over 5400 events each year to raise awareness on violence against girls and women all over the world. It has made significant impact on raising awareness around this issue.
N
V-Day has raised significant amounts of money to put into programs to address violence in developing countries. It has appreciably raised public awareness of the issue around the world.

Visionary Leadership

N
Through the 1990s and the 00s, violence against women (VAW) gained massive momentum among women's organizations as the most primary of female human rights issues that required our hard work, advocacy, programs & services, and campaigns. And yet, it was consistently under-funded by foundations and the international donor community, and under-prioritized in government budget allocations. V-Day's accomplishment of raising $80 million by local organizers for local VAW organizations in its first 10 years is a staggering, mind-blowing achievement. Leap-frogging the grant makers who have been slow to concede the need and importance of investing in this issue. Last, Eve Ensler's ceaseless devotion to V-Day, globe-trotting and publishing op-eds and performing, has almost single-handedly created an awareness of international VAW issues in major publications that would have otherwise kept their readers oblivious to the depth and extent of VAW issues around the world and the heroics at work to intercede.
N
They have a great leadership, phenomenal vision, and unflinching voice for advocacy.
F
Eve Ensler is an impassioned advocate for women. Her artistic abilities have been well used to raise awareness and action on behalf of women, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
N
V-Day has strong leadership and creativity.

Innovative Model

O
On of V-Day's strength is its leadership. Eve Ensler, founder, president and artistic director, is a charismatic leader who can engage and "activate" diverse audiences. Also, V-Day's original model/way of working is a strength. By making available a successful theatrical piece as a fundraising (and awareness raising) tool for local organizations around the world, and by emphasizing the creative and celebratory aspect of anti-violence work, V-Day has added a whole new dimension to VAW advocacy/activism.
F
V-Day's strengths are its visionary leadership. Also it has a strong model to create awareness and instigate change and they have guiding values that inform all of their work.

Solid Communication

F
V-Day is strong in marketing, messaging, social networking, and bridging arts and activism.

Excellent Advocacy

N
They are an excellent advocacy voice on the topic.

De-emphasize Western Culture

N
The US origins and the sexual nature of The Vagina Monologues can make association with V-Day more inflammatory in some countries rather than others. Finding a way to support these activists anonymously or covertly would help V-Day make a difference in places where VAW activism must stand on its own or else be branded a Western import of values or corruption.

Decrease Leader Dependence

O
V-Day has a lack of overall strategic vision . V-Day's agenda is determined by intuitive decisions of the founder/president, not on a longer term strategic plan, which could maximize impact. They could improve on US and English language-centrism. Even though V-Day is active globally, and its model gives the space to local initiatives to take it and "run with it), in its activities that are initiated and implemented by the "core staff", there is a lack of openness (or lack of awareness?) for engaging with non-English speaking audiences and partners, and to adapt to different ways of working in different countries and regions.
N
V-Day is too dependent on it's leader.

Increase Capacity

F
V-Day is spread rather thinly on its international work. It could also enhance its advocacy presence in DC.

Better Use of Research Data

F
Sometimes in her passion to raise the public's outrage against GBV, she can be sloppy in her use of research data.

Increase Collaboration

N
Because of their media visibility and "star quality", they do not always work well with others in terms of respecting other organizations locally and internationally who may not have the same media power that they do.
