Promundo Story: Global Symposium 2009 First Global Symposium on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality Diversity – this was the tone of the 1st Global Symposium on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality, which took place from March 30th to April 3rd. Activists, researchers and other professionals, a total of 439 men and women from 77 countries, gathered in Rio de Janeiro to share experiences, views, and commitments for a constructing a more equal world. The Symposium was the first global event dedicated specifically to the engagement of men and boys and brought together representatives from NGOs, government/public agencies, UN agencies and universities, among others. It offered the opportunity for these different actors to reflect about past and current initiatives and challenges as well as to collectively define lines of action to increase the scope of efforts to reach men and boys.

They have figured out how to work in a very difficult, violent environment with people who are tough to reach: urban slum boys. They are smart to use their culture in a meaningful way for those young men. One way the young men identified themselves was the music they like. You can redefine themselves through hip-hop, jazz, and samba, and used those musical venues to reach those men and redefine identity of manliness.

Gary Barker
International Director
Gary Barker is director of the gender, violence and rights team for the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), and leads the organization’s research and program portfolio on engaging men and boys in gender equality. Before joining ICRW, Mr. Barker served 10 years as founding executive director of Instituto Promundo, a Brazilian non-governmental organization that works to promote gender equality and reduce violence against children, youth and women. Throughout his career, he has undertaken research and program development on men, violence, health and conflict across a number of international settings that include Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Mr. Barker has authored numerous training materials related to gender and health, and is internationally recognized for his contributions to the Program H series, a set of innovative programs designed to work with young men to promote gender equality and reduce gender-based violence. He was elected as an Ashoka Fellow in 2007 and was awarded an Individual Projects Fellowship from the Open Society Institute for his research with young men in favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Mr. Barker is also a founding co-chair of MenEngage, a global alliance of international organizations that work to engage men and boys to promote gender equality throughout the world.
