Strong Advocacy and Legal Support

N
They offer very knowledgeable and principle advocacy. They are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and take on the hardest issues there are when fighting against violence against women. They take a principled stand on prostitution, pornography, those willing to include commercialized sexual exploitation in their work. They are a model human rights organization.
N
Equality Now is an indispensable feminist legal think tank, policy institute, and advocate for global gender equality. Their work has indefatigable courage, intellectual rigor, and media savviness. They have conducted undercover exposes of mail-order bride services and sex tours that have put the operators in prison, and have sustained the global campaign against FGM since Beijing in 1995 (and probably earlier). Their constant presence and voice at the United Nations has influenced the creation of UN Women, elevated the monitoring and accountability of nations and UN agencies re CEDAW, Resolution 1325, and MDG3, and ensured that eloquent and feminist legal minds are privy to high-level leaders on behalf of the global women's movement. But the most important impact of Equality Now's tireless campaign against laws discriminatory to women has been the reversal and reform of literally dozens of these laws in countries from Algeria to Bangladesh, Poland to Peru, Kuwait to Senegal. National women's NGOs around the world take advantage of the briefs, protocols and advocacy documents issued by Equality Now in their own campaigns, and we always know where to turn to get the information and recommendations right.
N
It works to assist victims of violence and abuse by helping them seek access to justice via the provisioning of pro-bono and high-quality legal services.

Strong Leadership

N
Up until very recently, their strength was leadership. The ED hands down represents the qualities she looks for in leadership- vision, courage, integrity, and making sure not to be ego-based. I don’t know who are going to hire now. ED been at the helm the last 10 years. A very well run organization. Their finances can withstand the toughest of scrutiny. They've been around for quite a while. I've been in their office they are well staffed and impressive advocacy staff. Equality Now is a high impact organization led by highly knowledgeable and talented women's rights leaders.

Inclusivity

N
Equality Now is one of the few global organizations to maintain its website and publications in four languages, including Arabic. This inclusiveness is also reflected in the diversity of the staff, holding offices in Nairobi, New York, and London.

Committed Staff

N
They have committed staff and large networks.

Re-think Strategic Planning Process.

N
Equality Now just underwent a strategic planning processes. I see this dynamic: A lot of money is spent (thousands of dollars) to hire these professional strategic planners and they come in from a for-profit mindset and they look at these nonprofits and they look at their operations and staff members like chess pieces on a chess board. I find that trend very troubling.

Expand Partners

N
Equality Now is excellent. My only suggestion would be to expand their public profile into mainstream newspapers, perhaps by developing relationships with investigative reporters. Also, they could leverage their impact by training female and male parliamentarians on the reform of discriminatory laws in their countries.

Match Load to Capacity

N
At times, the organization takes on too much and is unable to handle the high-demand.

Leadership

Yasmeen Hassan
Global Director
Yasmeen Hassan became the Global Director of Equality Now in 2011 after having served as Deputy Executive Director and Director of Programs for three years. Before joining the organization, Ms. Hassan was with the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women where she worked on the implementation of CEDAW and the Secretary-General’s study on violence against women. She has been involved in women’s rights since very early in her career, authoring the first study of domestic violence in Pakistan, which ultimately became Pakistan’s submission to the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing 1995. Long before joining Equality Now, she was a supporter of the organization, serving as editor of its first report on discriminatory laws in 1999. She has written several papers and opinion editorials on the situation of women which have been published in the Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune. Ms. Hassan holds a J. D. from Harvard Law School where, among other subjects, she studied Islamic law and women’s rights. She practiced corporate law at Davis Polk & Wardwell from 1995 to 2003 and clerked on the D.C. Court of Appeals from 1994 to 1995.
