Pro-mujer Story: Meet one of Pro Mujer's clients who lives in Salta, Argentina: Laura Rioja is a 25-year-old mother of three children ages 2, 4, and 6. Before joining Pro Mujer, Laura and her husband struggled to support themselves and their family. She had no work and no hope of a better future for herself or her children, who were forced to beg in the streets just to make enough money to feed themselves. On the advice of her sister, Laura went to an information session at Pro Mujer in March of 2004 and decided to join. She used her first loan to begin a small business selling sandwiches and other snacks. Soon, thanks to the guidance Laura received from Pro Mujer, she had made enough money to buy beds and other basic furniture for her home that she had never been able to afford before. Now Laura is proud of her business and at being able to help her husband support their family. Laura is now in her 4th loan cycle and has increased her loan to US$1,050 thanks to her newfound credit and economic success. Laura has learned the importance of solidarity through her borrowing group and is happy with the community and companionship she has found in the other women at Pro Mujer. She says, “I owe everything to Pro Mujer. I had nothing before.” The biggest change for Laura is that she can have her children with her at all times instead of having to send them to the streets to beg for food and money. She plans to give them an education, an option they would not have had without Pro Mujer. (Read more stories like Laura's at: https://promujer.org/index.tpl?NG_View=69&NG_Id_Country=1)
