Mission: Our mission is to help people living in extreme poverty achieve major improvements in their lives that last and spread without ongoing support from Concern. Our role is to ensure that people living in extreme poverty are able to meet their basic needs, achieve their rights and manage their own development. We do so by working with communities and by using our shared experience and knowledge to address the root causes of extreme poverty. To achieve this mission we engage in long-term development work, respond to emergency situations, and seek to address the root causes of poverty.

Concern-worldwide Story: Concern is committed to meeting the humanitarian imperative to save lives and alleviate suffering. We recognize the need to respond quickly, effectively and creatively to sustain the lives and dignity of people affected by natural calamity or armed conflict. In countries susceptible to disaster, Concern believes that disaster risk reduction is an integral part of development.

We are also committed to helping communities establish early warning mechanisms to prevent and minimize the impact of future crises. Such measures allow us to focus not only on saving lives, but also on protecting people's means of earning a living.

In recent years, Concern has further developed its emergency response capacity by strengthening its Rapid Deployment Unit and Emergency Response Team-a dedicated team of over 50 emergency professionals who are ready to respond to any disaster within 24 hours.

Last year, Concern responded to 41 emergencies in 16 countries, reaching 3.7 million people affected by conflict, drought, floods, earthquakes, and crop devastation.

  • The Horn of Africa. Concern is working to reach more than 560,000 with food, water and vital interventions to prevent and treat malnutrition.
  • Pakistan. Concern reached 2.3 million flood-affected people with essential supplies including food, clean water, hygiene kits and shelter materials. Concern worked to deliver community-based Disaster Risk Reduction programs to mitigate against future flooding disasters including irrigation rehabilitation and construction, as well as improved shelter construction and farming practices. Throughout its program areas across four provinces, Concern also implemented water and sanitation services, and introduced programs to prevent and treat malnutrition for mothers and children.
  • Niger. In a groundbreaking initiative, Concern is distributing emergency cash via mobile phones to the most vulnerable women in 160 villages affected by drought, allowing them to cover their most urgent needs-whether it is food, clothes, school fees or medical costs-while supporting the growth of local markets.
  • Haiti. Concern reached more than 460,000 people affected by the earthquake, managing 13 camps for people whose homes were destroyed, distributing essential relief items, organizing daily truck deliveries of clean water, treating malnourished children, providing cash-for-work opportunities, and ensuring that children have access to safe places where they can learn.

Economize

O
They could limit the number of expat staff deployed in an emergency, as sometimes it is excessive. They could procure items from the local country more rather than shipping them in from a different country. They should focus more on a rights-based approach to their work (with the associated downward accountability to affected populations).

Develop Human Resources

N
They could improve staff quality and tenure at the field management level.
