Kipp-bay-area Story: This story is about Jamie Dillemuth, a KIPP Summit Academy teacher. Jamie Dillemuth has been at the KIPP Summit Academy since ’07 (though in her first year at KIPP Summit Academy, Jamie taught at KIPP Academy Middle School--the original KIPP--in Houston for four years after completing her two year teaching commitment with Teach for America). “I chose to work at a KIPP school when I moved to California because I wanted to stay in the family. I love being at KIPP schools because they feel like home. The environment is not a competitive one, but a supportive one. Thinking differently is encouraged. People are willing to do whatever it takes to inspire students. When everyone is working together I feel that not only can we climb mountains, we can move them!” (Source: http://www.kippbayarea.org/wp-content/uploads/kbas_teachers.pdf)

KIPP gets much higher than average proficiency scores in Math and English-language arts for middle school students in their Bay Area schools, serving a student population with high rates of poverty and English as a second language.

They are the proof point that poor and minority children can learn, IF grownups do what it takes. They have utterly changed the conversation.

Program Design

F
They could augment their very structured approach to education with some less structured learning experiences that give students a chance to develop skills and motivation for self-directed learning.
N
Their strict disciplinary model feels extremely oppressive and does not foster autonomy in young people such that they can think and make decisions independently when they are no longer in a KIPP school. While they are achieving admirable test scores and graduation rates, it's not clear that students are actually prepared for anything beyond tests nor that students are actually prepared for success in college. Finally, these results are questionable, because students/families self select to be in KIPP schools and students who cannot handle it do not stick with the program. Finally, this organization is burning out teachers at an alarming rate with the extra time requirements, so sustainability of the model is questionable.

Collaboration

F
The KIPP curriculum should be widely available, not held as a proprietary matter.
N
KIPP is too insular and not funded enough to not overwork the school principal. If we were to use the corporate model, education leaders would be able to have meaningful dialogue with other school systems but this is not the vision of KIPP.

Political partnerships

N
KIPP could improve (by enlarging) its role in the political arena by engaging local leaders to set the stage for more KIPP-style success.

Leadership

N
The leadership pipeline needs speeding up. The current Fisher fellowship program is very strong, but not aggressive enough. Part of the hesitation is the awful education funding environment in CA.

Participant targeting

N
Both "soft" anecdotal data and "hard" research data indicate that some of the KIPP Bay Area schools serve a "creamed" student population and suffer high attrition of African American boys in particular. The schools' financial model is difficult to sustain. The organization needs to revisit its core instructional design to devise more inclusive and sustainable approaches.
