Mission: At Eastside College Preparatory School we are committed to opening new doors for students historically underrepresented in higher education. Our challenging and engaging curriculum enables students to discover their intellectual strengths, sharpen their academic skills, and embrace new opportunities in a culture of learning that supports the potential of every student to enter and succeed in a four-year college and beyond. Eastside students who are the first in their families to go to college create a ripple effect, changing their own lives, the lives of their families, and the life of their community.

Eastside-college-preparatory-school Story: This is the story of Joanna Leon, Eastside class of 2005 and Stanford class of 2009: Joanna Leon attributes her success in life to a solid foundation. She attended Cesar Chavez Elementary School and then the Girls' Middle School, where she experienced one of the defining moments in her education: she was surrounded by students like her who loved to learn and liked to be at school. She had the same experience when she chose to attend Eastside, where she discovered not only students dedicated to learning, but teachers willing to go the extra mile for her. She recalls applying to Stanford late at night on Eastside's campus and teacher Carrie Evans staying with her until her application was stellar. Joanna would not change her Eastside experience, except for one response to a writing assignment she was given in her English class: when asked whether or not one person could change the world, she answered no. She says, "I still think about that assignment, and want to change my answer to a resounding yes. I didn't realize it at the time, but my teachers were changing the world, my world, and I plan to do the same." A big step towards that accomplishment was to do well in her undergraduate studies at Stanford. She knew that Eastside had helped shape her identity as a leader and the day her professor mentioned Eastside in her class only solidified her belief in her capabilities. Joanna graduated this past spring with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and is currently working at Girls to Women, a local non-profit organization. She hopes to apply to graduate school in the near future and become a licensed social worker. For those ready to join Joanna in changing lives, she advises, "When I first got to Stanford, I questioned my place. You should know you belong in college, you have earned it. It will pay off, your ultimate goal should be to be happy and put yourself first for a while and you'll be in a better position to come back and help, one person at a time." Leadership

F
Eastside College Prep has dorms for foster kids and other at-risk youth. They also boast dynamic, competent leadership in Chris Bischof.
N
The staff at Eastside, from the leadership to the classroom instructors, is a group of remarkable professionals who are mission-driven and highly-effective. The school is very effective at engaging the surrounding community, whether its sharing best practices with other educational organizations or bringing area professionals to campus to work with their students. Above all, Eastside has a strong culture of excellence and achievement -- the students take pride (and rightly so) in their hard work.
N
Chris Bischoff, the principal, is an effective educator who worked well with and respected the community. The school has raised a lot of money to support a high quality program. Chris Bischoff is smart, hardworking, politically savvy and able to raise significant amounts of money to support the quality of the school.
N
The organization has extremely strong and consistent leadership. They have a strong, committed board, and have very successfully engaged the community in volunteer service and support.
N
Strong committed leadership - Chris Bischof has shown commitment and turn around capability. The organization has a commitment to its students and their needs.

Well-funded

F
They are very well-funded and have direct access to both Stanford campus support and Silicon Valley donors.
N
ECP has a very strong fundraising track record and could be a model for other nonprofits to learn about structuring fundraising events, capital campaigns, and board development.

Program design

N
This is a model high school educating students of color and their principal is fabulous.
N
Eastside College Preparatory School has a phenomenal model of dorms within a school. Their leadership is solid and their results are excellent.

Funding

F
They need to develop a sustainable fundraising model now that the capital campaign is 'over' so that the school remains free for needy students.
N
Need to have more secure funding for the future of the organization.

Scalability

F
Their model is not replicable; the cost per student is prohibitive and every school around the nation won't have access to deep-pocketed Silicon Valley donors and a world-class university providing volunteer labor, etc.
N
I wish they could serve more students. It is too bad that it cannot serve more students. It would be great if Eastside College Preparatory School could share best practices with other schools.
N
Eastside College Preparatory has an excellent mission and community but very small impact and is not scalable.
N
It is too bad they cannot serve more students.

Improve college graduation race

N
They can continue to improve college graduation rates of their alums. They can also improve their collection and use of data to improve student performance.

Student environmental disconnect

N
However, the assumption that taking students out of their environment as the answer cannot be duplicated. Students are disconnected from their origins in such a way that a deficit thinking is subconsciously placed upon students.

Leadership

Chris Bischof
Principal
As a Stanford undergraduate, Chris Bischof had started an after-school program for East Palo Alto elementary school students that linked participation in basketball with daily tutoring. But Shoot for the Stars, as the program was called, could only take these students so far. Chris began to explore the feasibility of bringing a high school back to the East Palo Alto community. In 1996, Chris and fellow Stanford graduate Helen Kim welcomed eight ninth grade students to Eastside College Preparatory School. They met first at a picnic table in an East Palo Alto park. Soon they moved to a room at Plugged In, a computer learning center, then camped out in an unused room at Families in Transition. When a donor offered a 1.6-acre lot at Pulgas Avenue and Myrtle Street, real estate developer and Eastside board member Don Vermeil donated the time and labor to put up a modular building. Board member Lynn Winkle volunteered full-time as a classroom aide and reading tutor to augment the small teaching staff. Soon the school had grown to 20 ninth and tenth grade students. The next year Eastside enrolled 35 students, the following year 70. In 1999, the Middle School opened.
