Story:
This is Ryan’s personal story of struggle and recovery thanks to the St. Anthony Foundation:
Ryan was a devoted employee at the Tenderloin Tech Lab for supporting recovering addicts at St. Anthony's residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Even in the midst of his own drug addiction, Ryan was known for being a dedicated and productive employee. More than punctual, he was the first one to arrive in the morning and the last one to leave at night. What his employers didn't know as that he was also a functioning addict, homeless and living out of his car. Although a devoted employee, each weekend Ryan burned through his paychecks on drugs and alcohol, making it impossible for him to afford rent or food. Soon homeless but still employed, Ryan floated in and out of shelters.
Ryan came to the St. Anthony Dining Room for food and fellowship and heard about St. Anthony's drug and alcohol recovery program. He decided to ask for help with his drug addiction; what he got was another chance at life. "They had structure: working one-on-one, doing the steps and exercises, talking about what was going on and even basic stuff like making my bed; basic stuff that I was starting to lose. It started with the simple things.
Ryan spent a year rebuilding his life, relationships, and healthy habits. Program participants not only focus on themselves and reclaiming personal responsibility for their decisions, but also on others by being of service as a significant part of their rehabilitation. Program participants serve in the St. Anthony Dining Room preparing and serving food to the guests. "The twelve-step program is really based on service and helping others and I expanded service into my spirituality. I try to spread my service around outside of just drug addicts and alcoholics because I'm not just an alcoholic or a drug addict; I'm a member of the human race."
Now one-and-a-half years clean and sober, Ryan holds a steady job, has rebuilt many relationships, and has made reparations to many of those around him who were impacted by his addiction. He continues to serve not only St. Anthony Foundation but many other organizations and people in need. He volunteers in the Tenderloin Tech lab and sponsors current St. Anthony's program residents going through the same rehabilitation process. He has regained stability and continues to focus not only on his own needs, but also on the needs of others. (Source: http://www.stanthonysf.org/sites/default/files/Spirit10Spring.pdf)

Even More Consideration for the Community |
N
Its administration needs to be more answerable to the community. The current executive director is pretty good, but his predecessor, who left just this past year, did a lot of harm to the community because he was more interested in politics than in the actual good of the community.

N
They should consolidate their strengths.
N
They should provide more employment training.
N
They should diversify--incorporate prevention and rapid re-housing programs.
