Story:
Raising A Reader is a national nonprofit organization that offers an evidence-based early-literacy and parent-engagement program. It currently serves 110,000 children through its 2,500 affiliate sites across the country. During the program, each child is exposed to approximately 100 books per year, and parents and caregivers are trained in interactive read-aloud strategies. This training helps parents and caregivers learn how to engage their child by sharing a book.
The program works by rotating bright red bags filled with award-winning books into children’s homes on a weekly basis. Through Raising A Reader, families are connected with their local public library. At the culmination of the program, children receive a blue library bag to keep and continue the practice of borrowing books.
“No other library service has the outcome-based evaluation results that Raising a Reader has,” said Nell Colburn, librarian at Multnomah County Library. “Our evaluations consistently show substantial gains in changing parent and caregiver behaviors around books and reading.” (Source: http://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/features/07152010/raising-reader-gets-children-started-early)

Their strength lies in leadership, staff, business model, marketing, and finances. The nonprofit has won the Fast Company Award three times for excellence in organizational development, impact, and scale. This is the youngest of notable organizations to win the award.

RAR has an excellent brand and a visible presence throughout the Bay Area. The 'little red bag' and 'little blue bags' have become icons by themselves that parents, children, and community partners readily identify. The business model also lends itself to wide exposure and rapid expansion. RAR is distributed through classrooms, which means 20-30 children and families join at a time. The staff are experts in the pedagogy, skilled at management, reliable, and passionate about what they do.

Strengthen board diversity |

Nonprofit needs to diversify and strengthen its board which is too insularly associated with Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The board is not a "give and get" board that performs the critical role of growing the national net.
Centralize management |

Right now the program works in a decentralized fashion in various Bay Area counties. It would benefit by coming under one umbrella so there is consistent attention to high-quality implementation, strong visionary senior leadership, and sufficient development capacity.
