Rainforest-action-network-ran Story: Read what a professional with expertise in environment has to say about his experience with RAN. He also joined RAN's coalition in Washington DC, which brought 3000 activists from across the country to shut down a dirty coal-fired power plant just blocks away from Congress, and they were protesting all day in the snow! RAN works tirelessly to protect the world's forests. They've been at it since 1985 and have saved millions of acres and help amplify the voices of indigenous allies and affected communities - from forests to coal fields. They're work to save forests doesn't stop at the logging companies - RAN focuses on greening the energy grid and getting America off Oil and Coal. They target the world's biggest banks to adopt policies that remove their investments from supporting dirty energy. They have helped build and galvanize coalitions of groups to amplify the effectiveness around the campaigns. They are working to save the Amazon from Soy planted by the biggest agribusinesses in the world. They are fighting to do the same in Indonesia where Oil Palm is the biggest contributor to deforestation (as well as helping put Indonesia in 3rd place globally when it comes to green house gas emissions.) They are also working to stop the Alberta Tar Sands project - duped the "Most Destructive Project in the World". And they are working in Japan to undermine the market for rainforest fiber from Tasmania which is turned into copy and toilet paper. Impact

N
Rainforest Action Network has hit coal hard on the finance angle and is bringing much needed attention to mountain top removal.
N
Rainforest Action Network is making tremendous strides in influencing the investments made into coal infrastructure. They are also leaders within the climate movement in legitimizing non-violent direct action and showing its effectiveness to others. Many of their corporate campaigns, waged over years' time, have accomplished their stated goals. RAN works in partnership very well, helping to add capacity to smaller non-profits with particular skills to offer, and also building up broader constituencies of support.
N
The Rainforest Action Network has educated more people about the importance of preserving the forest than any other group I know. They not only educate the public about how the "lungs of the planet" are being destroyed, they also point people to actions they can take to stop the destruction of our forest resources.
O
Rainforest Action Network has been extremely effective at bringing awareness to the destruction of the rainforest (even though for most, the rainforest is out of sight and out of mind). They have also allowed for the preservation of large tracks of rainforest and worked with large corporations to change their purchasing behavior. (i.e., Staples for recycled paper, Burger King to eliminate beef that comes from the rainforest, and banks to not fund logging projects).

Experienced, Creative Staff

N
They are very efficient with few resources and they have an experienced staff.
N
All of RAN's staff are creative thinkers with a sense of humor. This, to me, enables RAN to build partnerships where other, larger nonprofits fail to do so. They also have a dynamite media team who consistently manage to make their communications campaigns receive wide exposure.

Successful Campaigns and Marketing

N
RAN has pioneered education-for-action with regard to saving our remaining forests, and they have successfully pressured banks and corporations to reform their practices to be less destructive of the environment.
N
My organization has worked closely with RAN on many campaigns and they are a great organization.
N
RAN is a recognized leader in corporate campaigning, and is currently working on Chevron as well, which adds to the work of other local groups like CBE and Amazon Watch.
O
As far as I can tell they have excellent leadership in running campaigns, marketing, outreach, etc. They also have the ability to communicate effectively with the corporate sector the importance of rainforest preservation.

Be More Clear about their Work

N
Sometimes RAN's campaign strategies are opaque to the public, and as a result, their actions do not yield as broad participation as they might. For example, Wells Fargo is a target in RAN's coal finance campaign, so actions are held at ATMs. Many people are not drawn to this tactic, in part because the connection between banks and coal could be better explained.

Be More Creative with Funding

N
RAN could be more effective if they developed some enterprise elements of their operation and not be so dependent on grants and donations.

Engage in the Political Process

N
RAN could improve by engaging more in the political process, not just corporate campaigning and organizing. I also think RAN could conduct more NVDA trainings so as to broaden the skill set of grassroots organizers.
