Expert Reviews: Evidence of Impact
Theatre Bay Area, through its leadership at Arts Forum and other advocacy initiatives, has greatly increased the visibility of the arts community in overall policymaking. Its co-sponsorship of several candidate forums over the past few years has forced candidates running for elected office to articulate their vision for the arts in San Francisco and hold them accountable for enacting that vision. TBA has a HUGE impact on the life of almost every working theatre artist in the Bay Area (providing information, grants, resources, training, and community convening's). More importantly, it's raising the visibility of the theatre in the community (Free Night of Theatre is a shining example).

Organization Strengths Summary:

Experts think the Theatre Bay Area is an excellent organization because the Executive Director has taken a leadership role as an advocate for the arts at the local and national level. The staff is also willing to collaborate with the community and share its knowledge. Finally, they have weathered the economic downturn well, allocating resources appropriately.

Areas for Improvement Summary:

Some experts believe Theatre Works could improve if they had more of their staff members become involved in the community. They might also refine their strategic plan to be more proactive about opportunities than reactive. This would help them from becoming spread too thin. Theatre Works also might provide more free programming to reach a larger audience.

Impact

N
Theatre Bay Area, through its leadership at Arts Forum and other advocacy initiatives, has greatly increased the visibility of the arts community in overall policymaking. Their co-sponsorship of several candidate forums over the past few years has forced candidates running for elected office to articulate their vision for the arts in San Francisco and hold them accountable for enacting that vision.
N
They are the only organization focused on representing the theatre artists in the Bay Area.
N
They support the many facets of theater making in the Bay Area through the Cash program that TBA manages for the Theater and Dance Community, and also through the diversity of the programs they have developed. TBA also works as a catalyst for several conferences open to all the art fields in the Bay Area— a very unique way to make the Bay Area a good place to create and participate in the arts.
N
TBA has a HUGE impact on the life of almost every working theatre artist in the Bay Area (providing information, grants, resources, training, and community convening). More importantly, it's raising the visibility of theatre in the community (Free Night of Theatre is a shining example).
N
This is a tremendous service organization for the Bay Area -- it brings together Bay Area constituency and creates space for resources and dialogue.

Great Leader who Collaborates and is an Advocate

N
Theatre Bay Area has incredibly strong leadership. Brad Erickson is incredibly knowledgeable of the San Francisco Bay Area arts ecosystem and has assumed leadership roles at the San Francisco Arts Forum and California Arts Advocates. He is an able and willing collaborator and reaches out to diverse community members in all of his work. Theatre Bay Area also fills a much needed gap in San Francisco - that of connector, conduit, and resource. Theatre Bay Area is one of the few arts services organizations and is well-positioned to advance the arts in San Francisco.
N
The Executive Director is a tireless advocate, speaking on behalf the entire arts field from City Hall to the Nation's Capital. Financially, the organization has weathered the recession really well, and has made smart choices in terms of cutting costs and allocating resources.
N
They have excellent leadership that is engaged in the local and national arts advocacy scene.
N
Their leadership, staff, quality of advocacy, and networking in the community are all top-notch.

Involvement in Community is Great

N
The monthly meetings, the magazine, the auditions, and workshops are all worthwhile. The conference call meeting on how the arts are doing in Bay Area was terrific.

Collaborative Staff

N
This organization is great because of the amazing willingness of the staff to share their knowledge with their colleagues and to create programs that go beyond the theater field.

Get More Staff into Community

N
It would be great to see staff other than Brad Erickson out in the community more so that TBA could be more deeply engaged. From my interactions with TBA staff, there are a number of competent ambassadors and it would great to see TBA expand its community work.

More Call-In Conferences

N
They should have more call-in conferences so you don't have to leave the office to learn about the trade.

Reach Larger Community

N
They should use their knowledge and relationship with the arts community not only to have a Free Night of Theater, but also to expend their efforts to reach a larger community with a free weekend of the arts.

Spread Too Thin

N
Again, TBA has the tendency to spread itself too thin, taking on too many initiatives at once. / / The organization receives so many opportunities to take on new projects, it can have the tendency to be re-active rather than pro-active, hewing closely to its mission. The current strategic planning process seems to be addressing this issue to some degree.

Improve Publications

N
They could improve their magazine quality. They might also develop a better ticketing service for arts organizations.
