The Joe Goode Performance Group is a leader in the LGBT dance and theater company and broke new ground 20 years ago bringing LGBT issues into the mainstream. Joe Goode's work has influenced a whole generation of modern dancers and choreographers since he began showing his innovative, provocative, and often humorous work in the early 1980's. His company has trained and collaborated with hundreds of artists locally and internationally, creating a reputation for being a hub of contemporary dance-theatre. The organization has collaborated with community agencies such as the Larkin Street Project, and AID's organizations, when its work delved into the issues of homeless youth and HIV/AIDS. This group produces great dance, offers wonderful workshops for not only dancers but writers, actors--really artists of all kinds.

Joe-goode-performance-group Story: Joe Goode Performance Group produces new work, tours, and teaches workshops. One of their most recent performance was "Traveling Light". Read what the San Francisco Examiner has to say about it: “Traveling Light,’ a performance piece brilliantly filling up San Francisco’s historic Old Mint, is sensual, meditative, compelling and clever, a truly one-of-a-kind experience for art lovers. It’s clear why the Joe Goode Performance Group is quickly selling out this encore presentation of last year’s hit premiere: The work is not only unique; it’s a dynamic, multi-faceted event that takes its own shape for each audience member. The dance-theater-spoken word installation is a series of simultaneous performances in various rooms of the majestic, mood-inducing building; visitors, divided into groups, move from location to location, each group getting its own version of the show. (It also begs to be repeated, for a completely different view every time.) The agile performers also gravitate from site to site in nifty, intersecting ways. It’s about many things – the search for identity and meaning in life, self-worth, the power of money – yet its beauty and power stem from how it’s designed specifically for viewers to come up with their own interpretations. Goode’s troupe is uniformly excellent, their movement, acting and singing precise, soulful and evocative. Assisted by an uncanny production, set and lighting design by Jack Carpenter, modern music by Jay Cloidt, elegant costumes by Wendy Sparks and engineering by Dan Sweeney, director-choreographer Goode has created a wholly satisfying brain-teaser of a work that does everything good art is supposed to do – touch viewers’ souls and minds – and make them want more. Areas for Improvement Summary:

Experts noted that the Joe Goode Performance Group has been hurt by losing their rehearsal space/building. They should do everything they can to find a permanent home so they can help more local artists, keep their momentum going, and continue fundraising. Some experts also felt their work could improve if they infused it with new elements, perhaps through collaborative work with other groups.

Impact

F
Joe Goode's work has influenced a whole generation of modern dancers and choreographers since he began showing his innovative, provocative, and often humorous work in the early 1980's. His company has trained and collaborated with hundreds of artists locally and internationally, creating a reputation for being a hub of contemporary dance-theatre (dance that also includes characters, text, original music, and often humor, while addressing meaningful interpersonal and societal issues). The organization has collaborated with community agencies such as the Larkin Street Project, and AID's organizations, when its work delved into the issues of homeless youth and HIV/AIDS.
R
This group produces great dance, offers wonderful workshops for not only dancers but writers, actors--really artists of all kinds. All involved here are so human about what they do and help the rest of us understand more about ourselves in the process.
N
Their dance project at the Mint was ambitious, breathtaking, and original. By placing it in an inaccessible building, they made more of an "event" out of it, allowing the audience to mingle in the vaults and watch the dancers in more static poses beforehand. The progressive nature of the piece (the audience moved from room to room) stimulated involvement and engagement. The dance made it seem like the ghosts that haunted the old building were coming to life before the audience's eyes.
N
Joe Goode has had an impact through his work and his ethics in his work.
O
This company is a leader in the LGBT dance and theater company and broke new ground 20 years ago bringing LGBT issues into the mainstream. They continue to lead by example providing consistently high quality work that addresses pressing social issues with humor and grace.
O
JGPG has been operating for over 20 years. The group presents cutting edge and high quality events involving dance, theater, and music here in the Bay Area as well as in the States. Also they maintain a commitment to education and have a high profile in the arts.

Outstanding Leadership

F
The leadership of Joe Goode in the local and national arts community has been outstanding. He has been an eloquent spokesperson for the importance of the arts, and for supporting innovation in the dance field. The organization operates with the highest ethical standards, and has always run with a lean budget and no deficit. They accomplish a tremendous amount with very limited resources.

Financially Stable

R
I believe they are fiscally strong and they are diverse in their audience.
O
The organization has grown to become a stable and excellent organization financially and with their staff and operations.

Marketing and Contact with Audience is Great

N
Their follow-up has been excellent, keeping me & my friends (who I took as new audience members) informed of additional opportunities, challenges, etc. One friend commented that she felt like a member of the company.
N
They have beautiful marketing materials with clean, fluid photos that showcase their work very well.

Well Regarded in Community

O
They have strong community support and are very well regarded within the community.

Need Permanent Venue/Space

F
The company lost its home rehearsal space and has been at loose ends, renting from other organizations. Not having a home studio means not being able to host workshops, guest artists, and having the artistic "hub" that they so much want. During the same time, they decided to stage works in more alternative venues (like the SF Mint, a highly successful site-specific work last year). But not having a main home season in the big theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts has meant losing some momentum with marketing and press coverage, which ultimately could negatively impact their ability to attract significant contributions.
N
I know they're struggling with space issues, as most dance companies seem to do, but they make a strong case for how this issue truly affects the quality of their work.
O
This organization is homeless and trying to find a permanent location to call home. I suspect they need additional board support and investment into a new phase of development that will give them the capacity to relocate.
O
They could benefit from a dedicated space for their operations...both for the business, as well as the rehearsal space/studio.

More Class Offerings

R
They should offer more classes.

Develop New Elements in Dance Pieces

N
They should have an infusion of something new in the dance pieces--perhaps they could do this by working with another company.
