Dancers-group Story: Read what an artist who created a dance work with Dancers' Group has to say: Dancers’ Group serves a real need in our community. Most importantly they transform a large body of individual dancers, companies, teachers, students and dance audiences into a cohesive community. Dancers’ Groups gives us a sense of belonging and of being supported. They offer us a chance to expand and grow and they are a valuable source of connecting us with other dancers in the dance community. And they do so with generosity, dedication, and imagination. Without them we would be on our own struggling to keep going alone in the face of economic despair and isolation. The Dancers’ Group organization of dedicated workers knows about dance and dancers because they have all been there. I have first hand experience. They sponsored a performance I gave called “Spirit of Place” at Stern Grove last year. It was a performance dedicated to my late husband Lawrence Halprin and was performed in the site he designed—the amphitheatre at Stern Grove. It was our last collaboration, he lived to see it and loved it, and he sat in the rain thoroughly delighted. Their support had no boundaries. For example, between the two performances we had an hour break at which time Wayne and Kegan hunted down a laundry mat dried our soaking costumes and breathlessly returned them to the performers at the nick of time for the next performance. Their dedication, support, and good humor came in a steady flow through out our collaboration. Thank you Wayne and Kegan and all at Dancers’ Group for giving me the opportunity to share our final collaboration with my husband. You arranged for the funding, took care of all the administrative logistics, provided us with the steady presence of Kegan at all our rehearsals, arranged publicity and gave us loving encouragement all along the way. We couldn’t have pulled it off without your sponsorship. (Read more reviews at: http://greatnonprofits.org/reviews/org-reviews/dancers-group/P0/)

Impact

F
They brought together a huge creative sector of dance activity. They focus on culturally specific dance, commissioning work, national advocacy, and local responsibility. Their online newsletter is also great. They publish papers, are a fiscal receiver and more.
F
They provide the networking and resources--sharing of a dance service organization while also presenting dance performances of very high quality. They have had success in their efforts to connect high quality dance events with non-traditional audiences both through the Bay Area National Dance Week project and ON SITE, a series of free, outdoor dance performances.
R
This organization represents all of what Dance in the Bay Area is about: artists, choreographers, companies, novice professionals, seasoned dancers, critics, and educators. They serve as 501C3 for smaller groups, do fund raising, offer group projects for the community, and have a great web site. And, they're great at communicating with their members about their projects and programs.

They have made a great impact on the population they serve.

Great Leadership and Staff

F
Their leadership is experienced, energetic, creative, and they have good a internship and training program.
N
Their leadership fills a need in the dance community.
N
Wayne Hazzard is a selfless and enthusiastic executive director with a real love for and deep understanding of the art form. He is an artist himself and therefore understands the struggles and the pitfalls of small arts organizations and individual artists. He has surrounded himself with a staff consisting of mostly young artists working in the field, so they are deeply embroiled in the issues and culture of dance in the Bay Area.

Strong All Around: Finances, Staff, Operations, Collaboration

F
They have a solid, brilliant executive director who is widely-respected in the dance community. They have well-managed finances and clean audits. Dancers' Group has achieved a balance of mission and resources.
N
The organization seems lean and efficient. Their resources seem to be allocated well. The staff seems committed to the mission and is innovative in their approach to achieving it. Their partnerships with other organizations are particularly strong, as well.
N
Their leadership, staff, operations, finance, and marketing are all strong.

Produce Unique Dance Publication

R
This group has an amazing staff with detailed knowledge of the field in the Bay Area, in CA and in the nation. DG serves its members and promotes the visibility of a full range of dance forms. DG produces a monthly newsletter that shows a range of ideas, community calendar, want ads--all the kinds of things you won't find anywhere else.
N
They have a very strong executive director. They produce the only publication for dance in this community: InDance is strong and they take risks on a small, doable scale.

Valuable Resource to Community

N
This is a well-organized group that provides valuable services to the dance community, as well as resources for dance individuals and groups.
N
They have strong leadership, and provide a great resource for dancers and dance educators.

Diversity the Board

F
Dancers' Group operates with a small board of people who are very involved in the local dance world: Perhaps that's not a problem because it's thriving, but one would like to see a wider range of skills on the board.

More Funding for Traditional Dancers

N
They should allocate more resources for traditional dancers residing in the Bay Area.

Better Housing for Artists

N
They need assistance in finding a more permanent home to offer residencies for emerging and mid-career artists. They have been trying to establish a more international profile. It would be good for the health of the dance community if they could get this off the ground.

Partner with Dance Education Groups and Build Leadership Capacity

N
They should continue to partner with strong dance education organizations which would broaden their reach. They should also build capacity for the organization beyond the tenure of the current, fabulous executive director.

Develop Audience and Marketing

N
Their audience development and marketing could be strengthened. Their use of new media and improved documentation are also potential areas of growth.

Need Succession Planning

N
It would be good for them to get help around succession planning. During the six-years that Hazzard was not the Executive Director, Dancers' Group stayed afloat, but did not really practice their risk taking, nor do anything substantive to move the field forward...they idled. It would be good for them to put in place structures that would allow the organization to grow and thrive following Hazzard's eventual retirement (not soon, we hope).

Leadership

Wayne Hazzard
Executive Director
Before his manifold career in arts management, Wayne Hazzard had a distinguished 20-year career performing with many notable choreographers and companies including the Joe Goode Performance Group; Margaret Jenkins Dance Company; Ed Mock & Company; June Watanabe; Aaron Osborne; Emily Keeler and more. Coinciding with his life as a dancer, Hazzard has and continues to work as an advocate for dance. In 2000 he worked with the dance legend Anna Halprin presenting her work in a performance retrospective celebrating her 80th year and received an Isadora Duncan (Izzies) Award for his innovation, dedication and contribution to the field of dance. In 1996 Hazzard was acknowledged for his role presenting The Dedication Project: remembering those lost to AIDS. Frequently asked to serve as an advisor and panelist with such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, and Dance Advance/PEW Charitable Trusts in Philadelphia, Hazzard currently serves on the board of trustees for Dance/USA.
