“As a Research Associate for Philanthropedia, I gained a holistic understanding of the organization’s work by being involved in the evaluation of three causes from start to finish. Unlike some organizations that give their interns menial tasks to complete, the Philanthropedia executive team gave me a high degree of freedom and entrusted me with duties that allowed me to develop a wide variety of professional skills. I improved my oral communication skills by calling experts to increase survey response rates, worked on my analytical skills by cleaning up and summarizing experts’ comments, and developed my writing and research skills by creating online profiles for the nonprofits that made the rankings. I was able to feel like an integral part of the team, and I got a sense of the great detail that is put into Philanthropedia’s methodology and the manner in which they present their results. By reading the experts’ testimonies, I also had a chance to learn about what makes a nonprofit effective, which will be valuable knowledge for me if I enter the nonprofit sector in the future. This internship gave me the opportunity to use my background in media relations and data assessment to assist an organization that I believe is advancing the nonprofit sector as a whole.”

Francisco called Identified, and over three dental offices spanning
Oregon, California, and Pennsylvania. She decided to work with
Philanthropedia to gain insight in non-profit management and to
pursue research in a particular field (cancer). The experience has
been both educational and fulfilling in that she learned more
effective research techniques, was exposed to numerous cancer
experts, and met some wonderful and talented people within the
organization.
"During my research, I realized how many small organizations were out there vying for the same cause. Philanthropedia unifies the cause to provide greater efficiency in solving the problem rather than managing each entity separately."

“Doing research on healthy food access in Minnesota gave me a valuable perspective on not only a specific area of the nonprofit landscape, but the whole sector. The experience demonstrated the interconnections between government, business and a huge variety of organizations, from the global to the hyper-local.”

Social Cause Expansion Research Assistant
Heather Otto.
Hailing from beautiful New England, graduate school brought Heather
to the Bay Area five years ago via some great adventures in
Baltimore, France and Charlottesville. When she isn’t working on her
dissertation here or in Paris, she spends time cooking, eating,
feeding her NPR habit, and enjoying the Peninsula on her beloved
antique bicycle.
"This was a great mini-internship. As the social cause expansion assistant, I enjoyed every phase of defining the causes and helping to determine the most appropriate social causes for Philanthropedia to pursue. While the potential expert pools were largely responsible for delineating the boundaries of the causes, certain topics offered the challenge of combining Philanthropedia’s goals with an understanding of how major foundations and individual non-profits defined their missions. I found this work to be interesting and fulfilling every step of the way, from the initial brainstorm sessions to the final presentation.
This internship also offered insight into some of the issues facing newer non-profit organizations. (How should we define our position in relation to other organizations in the same space – Philanthropedia vs. Guidestar vs. Network for Good? How do we determine what criteria to prioritize in selecting and defining causes? What kind of balance can/should we strike between comprehensiveness and specificity?) Such questions reflect the unique position of an organization that is not only attempting to fill a market niche and assert its presence there, but one that is seeking to situate itself meaningfully amidst a network of organizations that are committed to effecting real change. It was great to be a part of that.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I appreciated the opportunity to research a wide variety of non-profit organizations that were doing amazing work. Immersing myself in a project that allowed me to see what people commit their workdays – and their lives – to was so inspiring!"
