Leadership

Liz Butler
Liz has more than 17 years of experience organizing and campaigning on environmental issues, with a focus on both market and legislative campaigns. After joining 1Sky in 2008 as Field and Outreach Director, she designed and implemented our nationwide grassroots mobilization effort that yielded hundreds of allies and hundreds of thousands of individual advocates. In 2009 she was named Deputy Campaign Director and assumed oversight of all the campaigning elements. In September of 2010 she became Campaign Director. Prior to 1Sky, Liz was a co-founder of ForestEthics, where she spent 10 years as the Organizing Director. She designed and implemented ForestEthics’ overall organizing strategy and built the organizing team. During that time, ForestEthics’ work resulted in the protection of over 50 million acres of forests in the U.S., Canada, and Chile. Liz also served as the National Organizing Director for American Lands Alliance, the Director of Missouri Public Interest Research Group, and graduated from Green Corps' Environmental Leadership Training Program, where she received the third Alumni Achievement Award ever given by Green Corps. In 2010, Liz was awarded a 40 Under 40 Award by the New Leaders Council for her work. She lives just outside of Washington, D.C. with her son.

Innovative Approach

Problem

Right now, across the country, scores of organizations, leaders, and everyday citizens are ready to tackle global warming and transition to a new clean economy. The movement is building at an astonishing pace—but to bring about the truly revolutionary change that's needed, we have to come together.

Innovation / New Solution

An entirely new campaign is needed. A campaign that is founded on a principle of nationwide inclusion, embracing both traditional and non-traditional allies. A campaign that is designed entirely and exclusively to address this critical moment in history. A campaign with the sole purpose of uniting, building and catalyzing the climate change movement behind a set of solutions that will rapidly reduce carbon emissions while jumpstarting a green energy economy. 1Sky is that campaign.

Impact

As of summer 2010, 1Sky has 200,663 current supporters. Since September 2007, 1Sky has grown to become one of the largest collaborative campaigns in the United States, building a society-wide movement in support of bold federal action to tackle global warming. The 1Sky campaign now combines the force of more than 600 allied organizations, a team of 50 staff in 31 targeted states, more than 168,000 climate advocates and more than 2,000 volunteer “Climate Precinct Captains” covering every state in the country.
