N
The Department for Persons with Disabilities operates the longest running group home in the state of NJ and with over 260 organizations providing similar service, DPD is the only organization accredited by COA, the Council on accreditation.
N
The organization as a whole treats each individual as a person and helps each one to reach their fullest potential in their life. The administration also supports the staff as well as the people they serve with dignity and respect. This is an outstanding organization that should be recognized more often for the high quality of work that they do. DPD has beautiful homes and a day program. Each group home maintains a home feeling. Each one is beautifully decorated and maintained at all times. Each group home has a live-in staff who works within the agency and also provides support when they are available in an emergency.

Organizational Strengths

N
In a recession the Department for Persons with Disabilities has managed to keep a balanced budget, save money in reserves and promote an active lifestyle amongst its residents. The DPD has a 50 year history and has kept staff members and volunteers involved throughout this time.

Long term and highly qualified staff and leadership are found at all levels of the Department for Persons with Disabilities. With the Department for Persons with Disabilities, you see clients who are well cared for and have the best possible quality of life.

It utilizes a Personal Planning system that monitors goals and objectives of all people in its care.

The Department for Persons with Disabilities is an organization that help develops strong leadership skills by offers advancement opportunities within the agency. Our agency has a behaviorist and a nurse on staff who are outstanding in their jobs and love the work that they do and it shows through their love for each person who lives here. They also provide many training opportunities for both supervisory staff as well as the line staff. They encourage us to point out an area of need within each group home in which they will develop trainings or find outside trainings to send staff so that they can help our people living in our homes to be their best. The administration also knows and supports each person who lives in the program and each staff that works within each program.

Areas for Improvement

N
The Department for Persons with Disabilities provides a very valuable service, but only operates 11 residential facilities. Expansion would be beneficial to those in New Jersey and around the United States.
R
The Department for Persons with Disabilities needs another workshop to accommodate expanding population of clients. Training and funding are needed to help cope with aging population of those with disabilities.
N
New Jersey needs The Department for Persons with Disabilities to expand. There are over 8000 people in NJ waiting for placement in a program like DPD.
N
The Department for Persons with Disabilities would benefit from expanding. There are over 8000 people on a waiting list to get into a program like DPD.
N
Probably one of the biggest things that we could improve on is sharing our philosophy with other organizations. We could always improve on communication from the staff to the administration and the vice versa. People working in this field are constantly advocating for our people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to increase the poor funding that the state has provided for us to run these group homes. We do work from our heart and for the people we serve. Our agency has a good benefits package for staff and but the salaries do not come close to the amount of work that each person does on a daily basis. Our salaries and pay scales are competitive with other agencies but we should be compensated more for the quality of work that we do each and everyday.
O
They do not meet the criteria of being a high-impact national nonprofit because their services are provided only in NJ. Their financial transparency could be better. There are many similar nonprofits that are excellent around the country. It's a stretch to say it is part of Catholic Charities. It would also be interesting to know what percent of the budget is from the archdiocese.

N
The Kessler Foundation helps not only other organizations that help those with disabilities but also supports programs that address issue such as job placement for those with disabilities.

They have tremendous visibility due to famous people being treated at Kessler Rehabilitation, which is no longer part of this organization. Much of their work is NJ based, but research grants have the potential to benefit everyone. Most of their services fall into the research category or the grant giving category. They have a high level board and aggressive fundraising, and very up to date website. They have maintained grant giving during the recession with no drops, and some of their grantees are organizations recommended by this panel.

O
Kessler would benefit from increased marketing and public awareness.
O
Their fiscal transparency could be better, especially as part of the annual report.

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) (3 recommendations) UCP has changed the way people with disabilities live, work and play. UCP has changed the way people with disabilities live, work and play. Through their many employment opportunities, people with disabilities are able to work in the community, make a paycheck and become part of their local economies. As important, UPC has become a model of independent community living where individuals have the opportunity to choose a life style and home, integrating them into neighborhoods across the country.
O
UCPs leadership has been very impressive over the years especially in advocacy. Technology has been a second area of success with this organization
N
United Cerebral Palsy has massive impact at scale: in communities, on policy.

Organizational Strengths

N
UPC is staffed with very dedicated people who are willing to work within their communities (and states) to determine the best possible opportunities for people with disabilities. Whether for employment or housing, UCP and its management teams work with businesses, government and social service organizations to provide the very best choices possible for people with disabilities.
O
One strength of UCP is the leadership, the years of advocacy for the developmentally disabled has been the biggest support to the industry. A caring staff, and faithful board of directors with insight into the future.
N
The organization has great leadership and wide reach.

Areas for Improvement

N
UPC is a standout in its efforts to provide the best possible lives for people with disabilities. However, the organization at a local level could become more efficient and successful by strengthening its core fundraising capacity. In addition, as a large national organization, UCP lacks the marketing vision that will increase community awareness of its programs, services and successes.
O
The combining of the two organizations was the improvement that I agree with, I think the strength of the two names will bring forth more philanthropy to the ARC/Cerebral Palsy organization. The improvements of all the centers in the last ten years has been key to the success of the programs. UCP must maintain relationships with the residential care providers as well as the parents; they are the source of support.

N
The Autism Society of America has raised awareness and pushed legislation that recognizes the autism spectrum, advocates for health care coverage and promotes educational accommodations. A few years ago, autism was on the fringes of the disability world and often misdiagnosed and truly misunderstood. Now, autism has a very strong lobby .

Organizational Strengths

R
The organization has the ability to reach a broad range of communities nationwide. The national focus and advertising is strong.
N
Parents have been a leading force in the Autism Society of America. By mobilizing parents and family members, the organization has locked on to the most passionate of advocates. Increased research and more sophisticated diagnostic tools have recognized more autism cases, which in turn leads to more research and treatment.

Areas for Improvement

R
The organization's focus is does not highlight research or empirical methods; they should expand to providing this type of information.
N
Within the disability community, advocates for children with autism have seemed somewhat strident—pushy—if you will. Long before the many signs of the disorder were recognized, advocates were pushing for lifetime coverage under healthcare plans. There is some image mending to be done.

Designing Accessible Communities (2 recommendations) Designing Accessible Communities (DAC) has had a major effect on the development of local, state and federal access codes and regulations. Presently, the DAC executive director, Richard Skaff is on three access-related committees of the California State Architect.  Mr. Skaff co-chairs committee of the California State Fire Marshall, and is a founding member of the National Fire Protection Association Disability Access and Advisory Review Committee. Designing Accessible Communities (DAC) has had a major effect on the development of local, state and federal access codes and regulations. Presently, the DAC executive director, Richard Skaff is on three access-related committees of the California State Architect.  Mr. Skaff co-chairs committee of the California State Fire Marshall, and is a founding member of the National Fire Protection Association Disability Access and Advisory Review Committee. Additionally, DAC has worked directly with manufacturers of products used within the built environment and public rights-of-way to assure that the products they manufacture help to create fully accessible communities.
O
Designing Accessible Communities provides direct support to the disabled community, the professional design and construction community. They actively participate and advocate for continuous improvements in statutory and regulatory requirements for accessibility of the built environment and in-programs available to the public.

Organizational Strengths

O
The most important aspect of DAC is the depth of knowledge about physical access for persons with disabilities held by the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors.  Additionally, the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors have worked with the disability community to provide in-depth analysis of pending access regulations which give the greater disability community the necessary expertise to represent themselves in the regulatory arena.  The Executive Director and Board of Directors have gained a reputation, as well, as recognized experts on physical access for persons with disabilities and have the respect of public building officials as well as licensed architect, engineers, contractors and building/business owners.
O
The Executive Director has many years of advocacy as a manager of accessibility non-profit organizations, a governmental official, and a member of several national committees of the US Access Board developing new regulations for the design of accessible environments.

Areas for Improvement

O
With adequate funding, this non-profit could have the necessary staff to allow DAC to be more effective on a broader level. Presently, DAC only has the Executive Director (unpaid) and no staff. With additional funding to provide support staff, DAC will have the necessary presence to provide technical expertise throughout the country on making the built environment accessible to everyone, including persons with mobility, hearing and visual impairments. DAC is not working only to make each publicly used facility/building accessible, but to change attitudes about access and people with disabilities.  There are still many decisions makers affecting the built environment who do not accept or embrace the concept of civil rights for persons with disabilities. DAC needs to find ways to address both attitudinal and architectural barriers.
O
With more resources, this organization could develop more materials useful to the professional design and construction industry and engage in even more advocacy at the regional and national level. This material could be made available on an expanded website.

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (1 recommendation) While the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation has been extremely active in pushing research for spinal cord injury, in the last few years, I've seen them increase Quality of Life Grants, which directly help those living with spinal cord injuries until a cure is found. One specific example is the additional funding to provide adaptive wheelchair equipment and train athletes to participate in marathons, along with the general public, including able bodied runners who are raising money for the charity. This provides an incredible amount of impact to the families of people living with disabilities - and many, many others who have been affected so much so, that they are committed to raising funds for the organization.
