http://www.glad.org/

Evidence of Impact

N
They helped establish the first state to overturn a DOMA clause.
F
GLAD won the case which made Massachusetts the first state to grant marriage equality to LGBT couples and is litigating the case which would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act in the Supreme Court.
N
GLAD has litigated numerous high impact cases and was among first to litigate HIV cases; they also helped MA to become first state to make same-sex marriage legal.
N
This regional litigation organization has handled cases that have changed the landscape nationally. For example, it was their Massachusetts marriage case that resulted in the first state to legalize the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. One of their cases was the first (or among the first—I'm not sure) to successfully challenge the constitutionality of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. They also do a great deal of work on transgender issues.
N
Their impact can be seen in their successful litigation in Massachusetts on marriage equality and their DOMA lawsuits.

Organizational Strengths

N
They are strong in their competencies.
F
They have an outstanding track record of winning cases that move the dial on LGBT equality. They also have strong roots in the New England community.
N
Leadership under Lee Swislow is strong. GLAD is focused but collaborative, and works to ensure their work is strategically aligned with other movement organizations.
N
GLAD is extremely strategic in the cases it takes—even developing certain cases that they think will be more successful in advancing the cause of LGBT rights. This is a testament primarily to their legal staff. They also have a seasoned and skilled CEO who is a strong leader.
N
They are very strategic about which marriage cases to bring forward.

Areas for Improvement

F
Thy could improve on their PR and marketing.
N
They could share their skills and approaches more openly with other national organizations.
N
They need better marketing so more people nationwide know of the impact this regional organization is having.
N
They need to do better marketing of their excellent work to others outside New England.

ALP has also provided safe space, and leadership development opportunities to thousands of LGBTQ people of color in New York City.

F
The Audre Lorde Project has extensive experience with leadership development programs geared towards vulnerable communities, including transgender people of color and LGBTQ immigrants, through their Transjustice Community School, Daring to be Powerful community organizing training, and LGBTQ Interpreter Training programs. F
They have a strong community base and they also have clear vision and programs.
N
ALP demonstrates strong leadership within the LGBT people of color communities embodied by its staff and the Board.
N
ALP blends a unique set of talents—a focus on political education, grassroots organizing campaigns, and developing of community members' resiliency and collective building.

Areas for Improvement

F
Additional funding would boost their capacity to continue national dialogue on LGBTQ anti-violence strategies that incorporate a challenge to state violence against LGBTQ communities.
F
The organization needs to diversify funding.
N
ALP is going through a very exciting Executive Director transition. Their new Director, Cara Page, is a nationally renowned leader who moved from the South to take this position. She can bring perspectives that will help ALP focus more nationally. ALP needs resources to move through this transition in a strong way.

They are serving hundreds of some of the most vulnerable and underserved members of their community. They are not only helping them to build healthier lives, but actually saving lives.

Organizational Strengths

N
API Wellness is a large agency that provides several direct services to the API community in the Bay area, but also manages to do effective policy work on behalf of its constituents.
N
Their CEO is a strong leader who both has overseen growth of the organization and who is politically savvy enough to both protect his organization and take advantage of opportunities as a result of the many changes happening in healthcare in the US.

Areas for Improvement

They are teaching them how to build community; to think about sex and intimacy in a more nuanced fashion; to engage in healthy support of one another; and to make safe sexy.
O
They have been a long-term, high-profile presence in the community. They are seen as experts and the main resource for the HIV/AIDs community and allies. They are stable, mission-driven, and have widespread community support. Their impact can be seen in their high recognition of the agency's value. Fundraising efforts are solid and well organized, with history and loyalty developed over time.

Their growth has allowed them to serve deeper into their target community, as well as develop collaborations that strengthen other nonprofits.
F
They have a health center for BTQ men offering testing and counseling. They collaborate with transgender and other community partners. They are the defacto service as the LGBTQ community center.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have great leadership! Fred Swanson is visionary and a great team player. GCH has learned to navigate the political mine field that is "gay media" and build relationships that demand a higher level of integrity in working relationships.
F
I appreciate their creative attempts to engage the entire LGBTQ community in social and other outlets that are healthy and provide community. They have leadership and staff that model healthy living and own up to unhealthy past habits so they serve as role models. They also have the ability to attract substantial outside funds into the community.

Areas for Improvement

N
GCH would benefit from a deeper involvement by women. Perhaps a strategic study of potential services, engagement opportunities, and funding potential would inform future actions.
F
Although I don't know of an example of failure, I sometimes worry that their fearlessness in tackling new projects may one day backfire on them. Lots of great events may cause staff fatigue.
Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing (2 recommendations) GLEH is one of the first community-based organizations in the United States to have successfully developed assisted- and low-income housing facilities for older LGBT people with low incomes and high service needs.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need more units!

Volunteers of America - Utah (2 recommendations) They are providing housing and support to homeless youth.
Volunteers of America - Utah
Bronze-small

http://www.voaut.org/

Evidence of Impact

N
They are providing housing and support to homeless youth.
N
They have brought a lot of attention to homeless youth and LGBT issues. Our state law does not allow local homeless shelters to house or provide housing to homeless youth under the age of 18. Being that a large population of our homeless youth identify as LGBT, VOA has done a great job at partnering with other LGBT organizations to provide services.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong staff and operations.
N
The two strengths of VOA are outreach and staff. Their mobile services van drives around to all of the popular sites throughout the city where many of the homeless youth hang out. They provide the youth with food and blankets for the night. The staff of VOA appear to be passionate about helping the youth find safety in the community, and are pretty well versed about LGBT issues as they directly impact a large part of the population.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need to improve their marketing and finances.
N
The two areas they could improve are increasing their involvement within policy and laws. This would allow them to effectively address the disconnect between homeless youth and LGBT discriminatory practices.

Evidence of Impact

O
This is a long-term AIDS clinic that transformed itself when almost insolvent. They are a premier care service agency for low- and moderate-income HIV+ people in Washington, D.C.

Organizational Strengths

O
They have a clear focus as a primary care and preventative care provider and no longer a walk-in clinic. Often times they are the only resource marginalized people have to secure treatment for HIV. They also have clear brand identity in Washington, D.C.
O
They work well in providing many services within Washington, D.C. Now they primarily provide medical services, but they have maintained important support groups—likely understanding them as mental health. Spinning off many responsibilities to the D.C. Center was perhaps wise for them.

Areas for Improvement

O
They need to expand prevention programming. They also need to increase resources in Anacostia and Ward 7 in Washington, D.C.
O
Spinning off certain programs with the idea of the D.C. Center meeting those needs has been rocky. I do not think they are quite where they need to be in that regard.

Areas for Improvement

N
CAR is run primarily by a veteran community organizer, Randi Romo, and young organizers being trained up. The organization would really benefit from resources to hire another more experienced staff member, in order to not fall into 'founders syndrome.'

Seattle Young Peoples Project (1 recommendation) YPP has combined strong leadership of LGBTQ people of color with an organizing program that is open to all young people. They successfully won two campaigns in the past few years: one to dismantle racist testing standards in Seattle public schools, and one to get Howard Zinn's writing into 11th grade public school curriculums. These campaigns were won by a majority of youth of color—with strong leadership from LGBTQ youth.

Organizational Strengths

N
YPP has created leadership development opportunities and safe space for hundreds of LGBTQ youth of color, and are currently working for a youth LGBTQ space in Seattle.

Areas for Improvement

N
Because YPP does not only work in the LGBT sector, it would be great for YPP to have resources to do peer exchanges with some LGBTQ groups, including documentation.

Organizational Strengths

N
SMYAL's website is accessible and easy to use in order to find out about its programs and resources and get young people engaged.

Areas for Improvement

N
I would like to see increased outreach to the suburbs in the D.C. metro area to provide services for young people in geographically isolated areas.
Southerners On New Ground (S.O.N.G.) (1 recommendation) S.O.N.G. has had a long historical position of bringing significant attention and change to the south, strong regional leadership, and collaborative efforts.

They need to have more visibility and stronger leadership in the national arena, bringing groups together around issues of racial and economic justice.

Organizational Strengths

F
SRLP operates with an innovative non-hierarchical organizational model. Their reports on how to build a collective structure and advance social justice principles both internally and externally are an invaluable resource to the LGBTQ movement. As part of these values, they are an example of an innovative legal organization that is also a “movement” organization, and connects members (not “clients”) to organizing campaigns and movement building.

Areas for Improvement

F
Additional resources would boost their leadership and capacity to win policies that would greatly improve the lives of transgender immigrants and reduce detention and deportation of these communities.
The Center (1 recommendation) The LGBT Center in Colorado has been one of the fastest growing LGBT community centers in the nation over the past decade. They've gone from a relatively tiny and struggling organization to a thriving one that successfully completed a capital campaign and bought and built a new building and has now expanded beyond Denver to another city in Colorado. They are providing numerous programs to a wide variety of people and are truly building the strength of the Denver (and now Ft. Collins) LGBT community.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have an effective and visionary staff leader who has led them through an extraordinary period of growth. They have dramatically increased their private donor base during this time.

Areas for Improvement

N
Colorado is the success story that most small LGBT community centers would love to emulate. They could do more in participating at the national level with CenterLink to provide mentoring and technical assistance to other LGBT centers.

Their greatest strength is the founder, Regina. Her boundless energy and passion drive many to get involved.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need to become more professional about their fundraising efforts. It's sad to see they are running a "capital campaign" with a $10,000 goal. The website advertised that they have only raised about $400 of that. Not very inspiring.
Tom Homann LGBT Law Association (1 recommendation) Tom Homann was a local attorney who made an enormous impact on the local community. The San Diego newspapers from the 1980s are filled with reports on his constitutional battles with the establishment. He fought with the city to prevent it from shutting down the adult bookstores or limiting the materials they sold; he fought city efforts to license and restrict the operations of topless bars; he sued the San Diego County Sheriff when the Sheriff refused to hire gay and lesbian deputies, persuading the Sheriff to stop discriminatory hiring policies; and he represented two sailors with AIDS who the Navy wanted to discharge without medical benefits because they were gay. The list of his legal battles and accomplishments goes on and on. This association was established to carry the hallmark of his efforts: to empower those who were shunned by society and to prevent the government from silencing minority voices. THLA now offers LGBT resources to our local community. We hold CLEs that are free to the public that focus on LGBT tax issues, federal and state legal issues, and discriminatory practices in the workplace. THLA was also involved in the fight against Prop 8, California's ballot initiative to ban same sex marriage. THLA pressured the local San Diego County Bar Association to publicly condemn the ballot measure, a stance which rocked the Board and caused much strife among their ranks. We also have worked with other LGBT organizations to sign on to amicus briefs in LGBT-targeted legal battles.

Organizational Strengths

O
The organization is going through a change. In the past, the Board has been comfortable with conducting the same events over and over. As our membership base has grown, so to does the Board need to grow and offer a wider breadth of membership benefits. It is a positive that we are growing. We now need to reinforce the benefits we give to the community and increase our footprint.

Areas for Improvement

O
They are currently getting a marketing makeover, including the outdated website. They hope the targeted marketing will increase our membership and allow us to reach more of the public. They could also improve finances to provide light refreshments at our events. Almost all of our events are pro bono.

Organizational Strengths

They are racially diverse, have good class analysis, and they are trans-led. They are very attuned to the community they live in, and they are not afraid to critique the organizations and businesses that would like to make them a proper "darling" of the community. Essentially, they won't sell out.

Areas for Improvement
