East Bay Center For The Performing Arts (3 recommendations) This organization provides professional and non-professional training in performing arts to a very diverse student body. They not only provide a high-quality artistic experience, but also have transformed the immediate community—economically and artistically. Located in Richmond's "iron triangle" neighborhood that is socioeconomically challenged, the Center, which owns its own building, has triggered economic development along with civic improvements that are helping to create a vibrant community for its residents.
F
They almost single-handedly turned around downtown Richmond from a shooting range to a dynamic civic center.

Organizational Strengths

R
They have great leadership, wonderful staff, and great programs for low-income children.
F
The organization has strong leadership—from its director through faculty and students. All of these individuals have stepped up to improve themselves and their neighborhood. They are located in a very diverse area of Richmond, and the Center serves as a bridge to many cultures—African American, Latino, Asian, and white; their programming and classes span the traditional to the contemporary.
F
They have outstanding leadership. Their mission to reach underserved kids with powerful arts programs is also a great strength.

Areas for Improvement

R
I would like to see stronger collaboration with public schools in their area.
F
They could develop more donor support as a way to capitalize themselves, especially their status as a building owner.
San Francisco Foundation (3 recommendations) They have a strong history of education grants for youth ranging from birth to grade 12 in highly disadvantaged communities.
San Francisco Foundation

Evidence of Impact

N
They have a strong history of education grants for youth ranging from birth to grade 12 in highly disadvantaged communities.
N
In the Bay Area of San Francisco, SFF has established itself as the leader of philanthropic giving. It seems that every large progressive event—from immigration to marriage equality, they are supporters.

Organizational Strengths

R
They have strong leadership and staff.
N
They have an organized grant process, as well as knowledgeable education staff.
N
SFF tends to seek out grantees as well as give them workshops/trainings on how to fill out the grant application. Also, there are multiple ways of gaining funding, from their mini-grant process to their larger general operating gifts.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need more investments in teacher training and state and national leadership.
N
I have been disappointed that SFF has cut back on much of their funding for LGBT organizations after the economic downturn. They also eliminated their program officer who had the LGBT project portfolio. Thus we do not rely on them at all for support of our organization.
Alternatives In Action (2 recommendations) They have an impact on student achievement (based on CST tests, value added test, and local performance assessments—as well as measures such as attendance, matriculation, and student satisfaction surveys), teacher development, and school effectiveness.

O
AIA has been serving two Oakland Unified School District high schools, McClymonds and Life Academy, for the past few years. They are expanding to Fremont High School in the 2012-13 school year. At Life Academy in particular, they work strongly in partnership with the school leadership, and are an integral part of the Educational Leadership Team. They provide students with holistic supports so that students can learn and maximize their internship opportunities. AIA was a critical support to families and the Life Academy community when the school lost a student recently to violence. AIA has a cascading leadership model, and builds guided opportunities for students to emerge as leaders within their organization and in the school community.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong vision, leadership, and staffs.
O
They have strong leadership and a commitment to ensuring college readiness for students in Oakland Unified School District.

Areas for Improvement

N
They could use increased resources.
O
They need to improve fundraising so that they can serve more of our schools!

Their impact can be seen in their longevity and reach.

Organizational Strengths

R
The organization has a great professional development model. BAWP also has a respected reputation among education organizations.
R
Their model of professional development for teachers is one of the best. It's effective, teachers love it, and it has proven impact on students' learning.

Areas for Improvement

R
the organization needs stronger leadership.
R
They need to do more professional development for teachers in the low-income community.
Breakthrough Silicon Valley (2 recommendations) Breakthrough Silicon Valley prepares motivated middle and high school students for success in academically rigorous high school programs that lead to college enrollment, and it prepares high school and college students for careers in education. 100% of BTSV students take Algebra or higher in the 8th grade. 91% of the most recent class enrolled in Geometry by 9th grade. 84% of the teachers said they became more committed to teaching after working in the BTSV summer program. 78% pursued a graduate degree in education or worked in education post college graduation. 72% of teachers entered a K-12 teaching program after college.

O
Breakthrough Silicon Valley (BSV) is changing the educational trajectory of low-income students. Middle school students who will be the first in their families to attend college learn how to navigate their way to college attainment. BSV provides rigorous academic enhancement and support, critical information on all aspects of navigating a path to college, and the personal skills and motivation that it takes to be successful.

Organizational Strengths

R
This nonprofit provides counseling and role modeling for low-income youth that strengthens their resiliency and encourages them to have high expectations of themselves.
O
BSV has a proven track record through a network of 30+ programs nationwide, and the program has been in operation for 25+ years. In addition to the support for college-bound students, BSV also provides a unique opportunity for young people in high school and college to teach and lead. These young "teachers" are invaluable role models and share their own experiences with great effect.

Areas for Improvement

R
Their largest funder is Applied Materials. Financial stability would be reduced if this funder ended their support.
O
BSV is embarking on an ambitious expansion plan and will need to build the strength of its board and fundraising capabilities.
Community Alliance For Learning (2 recommendations) In just a few years CAFL has taken their WriterCoach program into multiple districts, improving the writing skills of hundreds of students. In just this past year, they have entered into three schools in WCCUSD, recruited over 200 volunteers, and are set to serve almost 1,000 students in the district. With trained writer coaches, students make great academic gains in one year.

F
Their impact can be seen in the increased ability of students served to write; assisting the students with college applications in a highly competitive environment.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have an incredible Executive Director. They are the leading volunteer recruitment agency in the East Bay. Their PR person is amazing.
F
They have excellent and dynamic leadership. They are also strong at leveraging of volunteers and provide excellent training for volunteers.

Areas for Improvement

F
Every school wants them and needs them. I am concerned that they may not be able to continue to raise the funds and volunteers needed to match the need.
F
They should increase the number of volunteers of color in proportion to the ethnicity of students served.
Connected the California Center for College and Career (2 recommendations) They get great feedback from schools and districts.
Connected the California Center for College and Career

http://www.connectedcalifornia.org/

Evidence of Impact

R
They get great feedback from schools and districts.
O
ConnectEd has created a significant shift in the policy environment, opening real opportunity for the expansion of work-based learning opportunities statewide. Their coaching has made this work in their target district far more substantial than other districts promoting work-based learning.

Organizational Strengths

R
I've seen the growth in the college and career readiness work in the districts that are part of a nine-district network. The Superintendents and Board Members see the work of Linked Learning, driven by ConnectEd and SCOPE, as game changing for their districts. Teachers and middle level district staff report that they have received great support from ConnectED and SCOPE that has enabled them to begin to change their practice.
O
This is a well-run organization that has solid finances and a highly qualified team of technical assistance providers.
David and Lucile Packard Foundation (2 recommendations) They offer great research findings and amount of dollars contributed, innovation, entering new areas of need, and experience as a grantee of the foundation(s).
David and Lucile Packard Foundation

http://www.packard.org/

Evidence of Impact

R
They offer great research findings and amount of dollars contributed, innovation, entering new areas of need, and experience as a grantee of the foundation(s).
N
They have stimulated preschool policy and program development. They are also a strong partner with public education entities.

Organizational Strengths

R
They have strong leadership and staff.
N
They are a leading organization in the early learning sector. I also appreciate that strategic funding is not too cumbersome for grantees.

Areas for Improvement

R
They need more long-term funding as opposed to short-term (e.g. 3 months - 1 year).
N
They could use a strong infant/toddler policy platform and a better funding stream.
Educate Our State (2 recommendations) Educate our State has quickly become the most promising grassroots parent network in the State of California. They have united thousands of parents and dozens of organizations around exciting campaigns about education funding.
Educate Our State

Evidence of Impact

F
Educate our State has quickly become the most promising grassroots parent network in the State of California. They have united thousands of parents and dozens of organizations around exciting campaigns about education funding.
O
Educate Our State is a two-year-old organization that has garnered 45,000 parent volunteers to galvanize changes in public education in California. Up to now a volunteer Board and staff, it is transitioning to a small paid staff in addition to its volunteer Board. It has changed the conversation in many parts of the state, allowing parents who were frustrated with the lack of structural change in California public schools to make an immediate impact. EOS is primarily a parent organizing group that works closely with policy partners in Sacramento. Its current campaign to educate voters on the two tax initiatives on the November ballot is expected to move the needle by three percentage points, which could be the difference between defeat and victory.

Organizational Strengths

F
This is a lean, scrappy start-up that has been built substantially on the energy and determination of a handful of fed-up moms, which is a good place to begin.
O
The leadership has until last month been all-volunteer, and yet the parent leaders on the Board have been putting in 80-hour weeks from the beginning. Board President and Executive Director Crystal Brown has led the organization from the beginning, and uses a compelling personal story as the mother of three in public schools to tell the story of countless dissatisfied parents around the state. The finances of the organization are run smoothly by the Board Treasurer, who works at a capital management firm, and the marketing has been led capably by three creative women with ties to Hollywood. The result has been a number of videos that have gone viral and gotten the attention of parents, as well as legislators and power brokers.

Areas for Improvement

F
Educate our State needs to add staff and some of the basic elements of a functioning office in order to achieve its goals. There is such a thing as being too lean.
O
Educate Our State has just held a successful fundraiser and is on its way towards its fundraising goals for the year. The move to a staffed organization will allow it to reach hundreds of thousands of parents, up from the current 45,000.
Envision Schools (2 recommendations) Envision employs an evidence-based education model that leads to student success. Through a project-based learning approach that prepares students for post-secondary education, Envision's students perform, create, or produce something with transferable real-world application. 100% of graduates meet the University of California entrance requirements, with 90% of its students going on to college enrollment. Envision Schools’ student assessment methods are being shared as a best practice with school systems throughout the nation. This benefits Envision Schools’ students as well—lessons learned from providing training and coaching to other systems are brought back to Envision Schools for further refinement.

N
They focus on good results with low-income students, and preparation for college. They are being sought out nationwide for their expertise in project-based learning, and assessment to create rigorous college prep curriculum and programs.

Organizational Strengths

F
The organization benefits from strong executive leadership through its founding Chief Executive Bob Lenz, as well as from a capable and highly engaged Board. Envision has an eye toward its future sustainability. It has created the Envision Learning Partners as a technical assistance arm to bring the Envision brand of education to other systems without the fiscal challenge of opening up more of its own schools.
N
Their project-based learning and assessment of this approach is a strong point. They are also a low-cost provider of educational services at their own schools, and exist on a fraction of what the traditional public schools receive in funding—even including the money they receive through fundraising.

Areas for Improvement

F
Envision must work the next few years to create stability in its organizational infrastructure and continue to make strides toward retaining and growing its central office leadership.
N
Since they offer such a unique program that few other organizations can offer, Envision could do more to expand the number of students that they directly serve. Envision could do more to more broadly disseminate to the field some of the assessment tools they have created.
Girls Incorporated Of Alameda County (2 recommendations) Their impact can be seen in the evaluation results from its programs as well as their reach and reputation. O
Girls Inc. of Contra Costa County (WCCC) in Richmond provides wholeness to the girls from arts, culture, leadership, and technology. They were able to meet leaders, CEOs, business owners, and professionals who looked just like them.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have dedication to a specific audience which it knows best. They also have strong leadership and funding, as well as a national impact.
O
The joint leadership of Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Joan Osato really propelled this and they've got great integrity and enormous drive. Now that Bamuthi has moved to YBCA, Osato is more than capable and prepared to carry on the work. And with programs like Life is Living they've created a replicable model that can be successfully deployed in any city.

Areas for Improvement

N
I would like to see increased capacity and funding to serve even more and more girls.
O
Finances was an issue because there were times when the bills were not paid or taxes were behind and arrangements had to be made for these matters to be caught up. Also, they were unable to hire personnel to keep everything afloat. Due to the lack of finances there was not enough funding to hire full-time staffing, which caused the organization to suffer tremendously.
Lawrence Hall Of Science (2 recommendations) They have done a lot of curriculum development work which has been used by schools.
Lawrence Hall Of Science

Evidence of Impact

R
They have done a lot of curriculum development work which has been used by schools.
N
They have a global reach, and a high-quality curriculum that reaches every school in the country, as evidence on student test scores and other evaluation reports.

Organizational Strengths

R
This organization does a lot with not much funding.
N
Their work is based on solid learning theory and 50 years of prototyping and testing in real classrooms and learning environments.

Areas for Improvement

R
They could perhaps work on selling themselves to the community more.
N
Lawrence Hall of Science needs to tell its story better locally. They also need to find a new funding model that is not dependent on the State of California, which is not dependable!
Luna Kids Dance Inc (2 recommendations) They have strategically been growing and moving into better spaces and making themselves more integral to the art education ecosystem.
Luna Kids Dance Inc

Evidence of Impact

R
They have strategically been growing and moving into better spaces and making themselves more integral to the art education ecosystem.
N
Luna Dance institute brings strong and exciting creative dance programs to young students in the Bay Area schools. More importantly, they provide incredible professional development opportunities for dance and classroom teachers, helping them to bring dance to even more children.

Organizational Strengths

R
They have broad program terms of age groups. They also have focused leadership.
N
Luna is under the direction of two incredible strong and fierce leaders and dance experts; additionally, they have a wonderful staff of dance educators bringing the joy of dance to all students.

Areas for Improvement

R
I worry that they are becoming a university graduate dance program without any institutional support for higher education. While their work is good, if they offer the equivalent of an MFA without the degree, teachers may go elsewhere. I recommend partnership with college or university.
N
Luna could really benefit from a stronger online presence.
Math-Science Nucleus (2 recommendations) The Math Science Nucleus has cooperated with many groups in local projects that involve volunteers ranging from professional adults to children. For example, restoration projects include Tule Ponds, Stivers Lagoon, and creeks in Fremont. Students now have access to the Children's Natural History Museum in Fremont, which includes local donated fossils. Recently, the Math Science Nucleus has provided leadership in the Oak Restoration Project at the Masonic Home in Union City through the use of the California Nursery and the help of Tri-CED for producing compost.

O
Over the last 30 years, Math Science Nucleus has developed and kept free the Integrating Science, Math and Technology Reference Curriculum for K-6. It gets over 2.5 million hits per month, with 8,000-9,000 users per month. It has been translated by schools throughout the world, as they provide open source material. Over the last 10 years this group has opened a Children's Natural History Museum, a wetland center (Tule Ponds at Tyson Lagoon), the Fremont Earthquake Exhibit, restoring 200 acres of land in East Bay Hills (Masonic Homes), and working with the City of Fremont to reopen a historic park for school-age children (all documented on http://msnucleus.org).

Organizational Strengths

R
Its President, Joyce Blueford, Ph.D., is a great strength for the organization. She has hired an Educational Director who provides after-school classes for children. Additional staff now work at the California Nursery for growing seedling oak trees, etc. The operations include hundreds of volunteers who support projects for the improvement of local environments.
O
They are action orientated to get science to children through any avenue, from working to schools to governments. 2. They are mainly a volunteer organization, with most of funds going into projects.

Areas for Improvement

R
The Math Science Nucleus is now seeking help from professors and students at the California State University East Bay to do research on the Oak Restoration project and other projects. The Math Science Nucleus is cooperating with the City of Fremont on the goal of developing earthquake exhibits and other displays for the public.
O
They need to have funds to pay for an Executive Director. They also need to market more in the community, especially the Children's Natural History Museum.
Mission Graduates (2 recommendations) Mission Graduates has evolved from a flagship youth development organization to a premiere college access and success organization. They have become intentional in focus and have six cohorts of college-going students as evidence of their success.
Mission Graduates

Evidence of Impact

F
Mission Graduates has evolved from a flagship youth development organization to a premiere college access and success organization. They have become intentional in focus and have six cohorts of college-going students as evidence of their success.
F
MG students are incredibly engaged in the work of the organization and in improving their neighborhood and community. The College Connect program keeps students engaged in year-round discussions about their college goals with hands-on support to get to and through college. They run a summer program for students from Mission High School transitioning to City College of San Francisco to support their successful college matriculation. Students from this program were more likely to enroll in core college courses and persist into their second semester of college.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have strong leadership, staff, and parent partners. They use strategic research to determine their programming, and it's paying off.
F
They have innovative approaches to engaging students (through music, neighborhood groups, youth leadership, peer education). They offer comprehensive support to their partner high school (Mission High School, SF) so they have more impact than their cohort of students.

Areas for Improvement

F
They experienced a recent leadership transition—all for the good—but they are still growing and staffing up from recent changes.
F
They are working with more students to have a broader impact.
Museum Of Childrens Art (Mocha) (2 recommendations) They have solid programming, good partnerships with schools, and the ability to sustain.
Museum Of Childrens Art (Mocha)

Evidence of Impact

R
They have solid programming, good partnerships with schools, and the ability to sustain.
N
This nonprofit provides a place to engage youth in the practice of visual art at a very early age, pre-school years.

Organizational Strengths

R
Their curriculum and understanding of how the visual arts work in elementary schools is very strong.

Areas for Improvement

R
They are going through a leadership transition which will need to be carefully handled.
Partnership For Children and Youth (2 recommendations) They have strong leadership at the local and policy level. They have been successful in assisting schools and districts to access and obtain state and federal grant funds. They are highly respected.
F
The Partnership for Children and Youth has established a respected reputation for its work in public policy. It has played a key role in achieving policy wins for increasing funding for summer and afterschool programs, creating sustainably-funded school nutrition programs, and establishing school-community partnerships throughout the State. Their Executive Director, Jennifer Peck, is highly respected, well connected, and has a history of getting things done at the regional, state, and federal levels. She has been a key champion in moving the community schools movement in the Bay Area, statewide, and nationally.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have expert leadership, skilled staff, and a great reputation. They also have strong state and national networks and connections.
F
The Partnership for Children in Youth plays a critical role in the partnership building necessary for community schools. They recognize the importance of strength in numbers. Partners involved or pledging their support include: The California School-Health Centers Association, the Center for Community School Partnerships at UC Davis, Coalition for Community Schools, California League of Cities, California State Association of Counties, and California School Boards Association. The organization also pulls the right levers. In addition to coalition building, they know how to identify, frame, and communicate the children and youth issues for which they are most passionate. Their staff is lean, but extremely effective in working equally with on-the-ground program implementers and policy makers.

Areas for Improvement

F
They have modest facilities. All staff members are working very hard, but they might be stretched too thin. They could use more core operating support, which is essential to the field.
People Acting In Community Together (2 recommendations) PACT has an incredible group of supporters and has cultivated hundreds of parent and community leaders. They have helped bring three quality new charter schools to San Jose in the last two years, and have successfully advocated for a variety of efforts to support local schools and students in low-income neighborhoods.

Evidence of Impact

N
PACT has an incredible group of supporters and has cultivated hundreds of parent and community leaders. They have helped bring three quality new charter schools to San Jose in the last two years, and have successfully advocated for a variety of efforts to support local schools and students in low-income neighborhoods.
N
Thanks to PACT's work empowering parents to advocate for their children, charter schools that better met students' needs were developed. PACT also has attracted education investments to San Jose such as those from Applied Materials.

Organizational Strengths

N
PACT is incredibly thoughtful about their work, has a strong leadership team including an incredible executive team and organizers with experience and a wide array of connections. They are extremely diligent about responding to parent/community need and are experts at strategic planning even when the work can have moving targets. Their marketing and fundraising is exemplary.
N
PACT really works to empower its volunteers, which leads to grass roots action that leads to systems change. It is a powerful model, and when PACT speaks, people listen.

Areas for Improvement

N
They are going through a leadership transition so there is a need to plan well for this. The education strand of their work is significant and improvement is needed in terms of number of staff to ensure they are able to move forward as effectively and quickly as possible.
N
The current leader, who has been there 10 years, is leaving and I suspect it could be a period of transition for PACT and there may be need for strategic planning. PACT also may be able to benefit from greater financial sustainability.
Reading Partners (2 recommendations) They have the ability to leverage capacity building consulting to improve organization.

F
They are strong at leveraging the community and AmeriCorps volunteers. They also have a strong commitment for a young organization to demonstrating effectiveness and engaging in rigorous evaluation.

Areas for Improvement

F
The organization is growing fast and needs to ensure that the culture and quality of the staff and programming are preserved in this rapid growth period.
Roses In Concrete (2 recommendations) This organization is just starting up but will be able to transform Oakland in positive ways. Its aim to build a community around the development of a school will provide young people an opportunity to strengthen their agency.
Roses In Concrete

Evidence of Impact

R
This organization is just starting up but will be able to transform Oakland in positive ways. Its aim to build a community around the development of a school will provide young people an opportunity to strengthen their agency.
O
Roses in Concrete/Step to College is ramping up, cohort by cohort, to get urban youth onto a college track with the express purpose of creating a civic awareness, scholar-warriors, and bringing them BACK to their neighborhoods to assist others through education.

Organizational Strengths

R
They have strong leaders and motivated youth.
O
Roses in Concrete has visionary leadership, a deep understanding of the population served, master teachers, and a knowledgeable Board.

Areas for Improvement

O
Roses in Concrete needs greater support.
Superstars Literacy (2 recommendations) They serve elementary school-age youth in West Oakland.
Superstars Literacy
Silver-small

Evidence of Impact

N
They serve elementary school-age youth in West Oakland.
O
SSL focuses exclusively on serving the K' population, and providing strong early literacy programming. They recently were awarded an AmeriCorps grant. I would like to see SSL support more of our afterschool sites in early literacy programming for the youngest students, and I envision our After School Program Office partnering with them in some way (and with the Oakland Literacy Coalition) to develop an early literacy initiative for our elementary afterschool programs.

Organizational Strengths

N
They are focused on education and have a quality staff.
O
They have strong leadership and expertise in training literacy tutors.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need to connect to larger nonprofits for sustainability. They also need to go to scale.
O
They need more fundraising so that they can serve more of our schools!
Teach For America (2 recommendations) Teach for America brings hundreds of high-quality teachers into Bay Area classrooms each year. TFA alumni have also gone on to become principals and educational leaders that are leading schools and reform efforts that are changing our education system.
N
They aim to bring thousands of bright young minds into the field to develop new solutions to education issues.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have an amazing alumni base that remains committed to education. They also have lots of political ties that help frame the education debate and a great support network for their teachers as they learn on the job.
N
They have strong leadership and organization. They have a strong network they can leverage to recruit, place, and support members.

Areas for Improvement

F
TFA has a problem with retention. They only ask teachers to commit for two years. This means many of their corp members cycle through the education system very fast. Also, they need to use their political will for advocating for change. They are continuing to put good teachers into systems that are dysfunctional and therefore not attractive for long-term employment.
N

Organizational Strengths

N
ACE Charter School (formerly ACE Public School Network) works to prepare students who have a difficult time in school to be prepared for high school and college. What makes ACE unique is that they target and tailor their program around students who are struggling with English and students who don't see themselves as college prep students and students who generally have to be encouraged to engage in school. A primary goal is for all students to be proficient in Algebra 1 by the 8th grade—a feat that for some seems insurmountable when they begin ACE as a 5th grader who has trouble with subtraction. ACE is nurturing, rigorous, and individualized in the attention they pay each student. They use data to modify their program and teaching and do not use excuses when student achievement isn't where they believe it should be. Instead they make thoughtful and bold changes to ensure they are doing whatever they can to help kids be successful.

Areas for Improvement

N
ACE began a charter high school in 2012 and they still have work to do as they develop the high school to ensure that it is successful. The teacher and school leader pipeline also is an area of improvement, particularly as they grow more schools.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong leadership. Co-founders Chris Bischof and Helen Kim are still at the helm of the school, a full 15 years after the school was founded. They also have a steadfast commitment to mission—they do not divert from the recipe that works. They know what it takes to get students into college and the entire school community works tirelessly to meet each student's individual needs.

Areas for Improvement

N
They suffer, at times, from lower employee morale because the focus is always on the students (as it should be). There isn't as much concern for staff professional development or advancement within. Burnout happens easily as well, given the huge time commitment staff and faculty make to the program.

Nearly 90 percent of its most recent graduating class were accepted to college...a much higher percentage than the Oakland School District.

Organizational Strengths

N
The school has attracted a strong faculty and its two most recent leaders have grown from within. Like many charter schools, Unity struggles with the current fiscal challenges the state faces. Despite the state's fiscal situation, the school has been able to remain fiscally solvent.

Areas for Improvement

N
The school could be more aggressive in making links to funders and sharing its accomplishments widely. The school leases its facility from a local church and plans have been in the works for several years to acquire a more suitable facility.

This organization has deeply penetrated East Contra Costa County by effectively utilizing limited financial support that they have acquired through their commitment to their vision.

Areas for Improvement

O
One Day At A Time should secure external funding to broaden and expand their much needed services to the youth of East Contra Costa County. The demand for services always outweighs the ability to meet their critical needs.
Overfelt High School (1 recommendation) Overfelt High School has transformed its student culture. The quality of teaching and the commitment of the staff is equal to any school in the Bay Area. They have implemented small learning communities across all four years and instilled a climate of success and possibility. Going to college has become what is expected, similar to an elite private school, even though the obstacles that students face are tremendous. Advanced Placement classes, information about attaining a college education, and exhortation to work hard to achieve success have become the norm at Overfelt High School.

Based on how the rigorous summer program helps retard summer learning loss for middle school students, as reflected in successful algebra 1 enrollment and completion rates in the subsequent academic year for entering 8th and 9th graders, this is an impactful organization.

Organizational Strengths

N
The organization has been around for over 20 years. This gives it credence via sustainability. Also, the organization has been nimble over the years, i.e. the summer curriculum/focus, and has kept its focus on the right areas (math and LA) for the population it serves. Finally, Peninsula Bridge has kept its mission very simple and pure over the years and has not suffered from "mission creep" like other organizations I have known.

Areas for Improvement

N
The organization needs to make a more explicit connection to what students are doing during the regular academic year. Also, the program ends for students entering 8th grade, so there's a gap between when they leave the program and when they enter high school.

They have amazing integration with the prison system, resulting in being able to influence a highly rigid, old-school mentality among prison guards and officials.

Areas for Improvement

Organizational Strengths

R
In 2010 Reach Institute was awarded a five-year $7.1 million “teacher incentive fund” (TIF) federal grant. This grant more than doubled Reach’s budget, ensuring Reach’s financial sustainability through 2015, and facilitated additional foundation funding.

Areas for Improvement

R
Obtaining WASC accreditation is a key strategic priority, but it was put on hold to implement the Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) grant. WASC accreditation will allow students to take out federal loans for the program, permitting Reach to become fully sustainable and scalable by increasing its tuition and decreasing its need for external funding. For now, TIF ensures REACH's financial sustainability through 2015.

The county has come to rely on the Project Cornerstone surveys and reports as a vital piece on the "health" of our community's young people.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have an excellent Executive Director and staff, and strong relationships with schools and school districts. They also have recognized expertise and a trusted model that helps define the health and wellbeing of youth in the community.

Areas for Improvement

N
They could expand their work to pre-K, as there has been some work in this area. They could also continue regular frequency of surveys that roll up into district-wide and countywide "report cards" of the health and wellbeing of our youth. The surveys and associated data analysis require funding.

The leader has a knack for getting parents engaged in the program in a level often not witnessed in afterschool education programming. The students are trained to have a lot of discipline, respect for elders, and professionalism.

Areas for Improvement

F
While fairly effective, this organization relies heavily on the Executive Director for programming and support. The Executive Director has done a good job of securing parent volunteers, but without better infrastructure, this program will continue to remain a small program that will not be brought to scale.

The Youth Intervention Network has developed a lead capacity over the past six years to identify families in deep crisis and provide mentoring support to those families in order to establish a stable foundation from which additional social support services can be utilized. The network of mentors, which numbers well over 100, have all been trained under the Dialog for Peaceful Change methodology. Their work has been recognized regionally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.

Areas for Improvement

O
YIN has a long tradition of continuous improvement. This is accomplished by deep reflection and feedback from the community. Most recently, this organization evaluated their Board governance structure and reorganized itself to a more efficient model to further expand its reach into the community. The program could be enhanced with continued effort to seek outside funding to expand the many programs and services it can offer to the community of Antioch. Additionally, these funds could also expand the visibility of their work to the broader Antioch community.
