826 Valencia (2 recommendations) Their impact is evidenced in their exposure in the press and high attendance in their programs.
826 Valencia

http://826valencia.org/

Evidence of Impact

N
Their impact is evidenced in their exposure in the press and high attendance in their programs.
N
826 Valencia is a consistent, creative resource for youth where they can improve their reading and writing skills. The organization continues to grow and change, offering young people validation through its publications, professional development through classes, and basic skills support through tutoring.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have great marketing appeal. Through their retail shop they can diversify their audience and their funding. Their products get people outside the youth and family demographic to care. They have celebrity exposure: it helps to have Dave Eggers, a well-known author, as the founder and spokesperson.
N
Their use of volunteers and ability to mobilize community support are both strengths of 826 Valencia.

Areas for Improvement

N
By focusing on underserved youth, they may be missing the opportunity to impact more children that could use help writing. They've outgrown their space and could serve more people if they had more staff and room.
N
They have a very small staff and could possibly use more non-volunteer administrative support.
Arts Council Silicon Valley (Acsv) (2 recommendations) Their impact can be seen in their strong effort in support of the arts throughout Silicon Valley.

With more funding they could impact more people. Additional staff would allow them to do more.
Artspan (2 recommendations) I am a San Francisco artist who participates in SFopen studio every year. Through this event I have gotten two reputable galleries and sold work. For many San Francisco artists this event is the biggest money maker of the year.
Artspan

O
I am a San Francisco artist who participates in SFopen studio every year. Through this event I have gotten two reputable galleries and sold work. For many San Francisco artists this event is the biggest money maker of the year.
N
The organization hosts the city's artist open studios. They work in every district and bring new audiences to appreciate and financially support the artists through art sales.

Organizational Strengths

O
They are doing a tremendous amount with a staff of about three people. The Director is particularly good, and she has a way of channeling her ideas for the future into practical steps.
N
They are well known with a positive reputation and are great at collaboration with other arts organizations.

Areas for Improvement

O
The organization needs to raise more money. This is a big step because they are fairly grassroots-y and not particularly connected with powerful people.
N
They could increase funding to expand their program and hire more staff to make greater impact.
Asian Art Museum Foundation Of San Francisco (2 recommendations) They have a diversity of exhibitions.
Asian Art Museum Foundation Of San Francisco

Organizational Strengths

N
They have a good location.
O
They offer great participatory programming and they involve kids and families. They have great exhibit conception and design.

Areas for Improvement

O
They could benefit from broader marketing.
Bay Area Video Coalition (2 recommendations) They are working in the visual arts and with teens. I have seen their videos around for the length of my career. They are a model for other organizations. Their connection to the community is something I have always seen as an example of how an organization can engage the audience.

N
They are working in the visual arts and with teens. I have seen their videos around for the length of my career. They are a model for other organizations. Their connection to the community is something I have always seen as an example of how an organization can engage the audience.
N
Their impact can be seen in the number of storytellers they have empowered.

Organizational Strengths

N
They get their work out there so that people in and out of the field know about it. They've made long-term connections to the community they serve, which is rare for visual arts organizations.

Areas for Improvement

N
I wish they shared their model with organizations outside of their immediate field so that others could see the impact. It's easier to influence similar organizations, but reaching different kinds of organizations is important.
Bayview Hunters Point Center For Arts And Technology (2 recommendations) Having followed this organization out of interest, I see how they have drawn a community together around means of expressions—specifically film. Their interest in cultivating the individual strengths as well as the community commitment of their constituency is working. This is evidenced not just through the quantity of films and videos that they produce, but also in their job training and placement in production and technical support for film and video. They instill pride in their participants and it carries the young men and women who are part of BAYCAT.

This is evidenced not just through the quantity of films and videos that they produce, but also in their job training and placement in production and technical support for film and video. They instill pride in their participants and it carries the young men and women who are part of BAYCAT.
F
BAYCAT educates and employs youth and young adults in the production of digital media that tells their stories in their own way. Students not only learn every aspect of digital media—from design, stop motion animation, editing, to TV show production, but they also are assisted in finding internships and jobs in these fields.

Organizational Strengths

N
The Executive Director Villy Wang is motivating, generous, indefatigable, and connected. She has built a large community of participant support by a broad and large community of supporters and ambassadors.
F
The training and assistance has helped to engage a segment of youth from the Bay View Hunters Point, a very depressed part of San Francisco with a high number of families below the poverty line and gang warfare. Along with the training, the organization has established a video production business that raised earned income, while giving the youth valuable on-the-job experience.

Areas for Improvement

N
They could be better resourced regarding staff and equipment.
F
They could use more donor and individual support in their annual budget. They could also use larger staff to help the Director with the myriad of responsibilities and programming.
Chhandam Chitresh Das Dance Company (2 recommendations) They are having continued impact throughout the Bay Area community, particularly among the youth, instilling deep cultural and moral values.
Chhandam Chitresh Das Dance Company

Evidence of Impact

N
They are having continued impact throughout the Bay Area community, particularly among the youth, instilling deep cultural and moral values.
N
Chitresh Das has single-handedly exposed the greater Bay Area to Kathak Dance. Through training, mentoring, teaching, performing, and artistic collaboration, Chitresh Das has supported and evangelized for traditional Kathak dance as an expression of a culture and as an important contemporary voice in the performing arts. He has had numerous pioneering collaborations, most recently India Jazz Suites with Jason Samuels Smith, that bridge the cultural dialects of percussive dance.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have great leadership from the Executive Director in the areas of marketing, community building, and finances. They have great management of several branches local and worldwide with responsibilities shared with the next generation, sustaining interest of several young dancers to take this as a career.
N
CDDC has built an extensive framework for their international organization based in San Francisco. In addition to sites in San Francisco and Mountain View, they have satellite campuses in the Boston area, Los Angeles, and Mumbai. Chitresh Das has personally trained the leaders of these sites—his standards are high, as he seeks the transference and awareness of Indian culture in its purest Kathak form.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need outreach programs.
N
They are in danger of spreading themselves too thin, as they do not have a huge organizational infrastructure. While Pandit Chitresh Das has personally trained his disciples, it is not clear what the succession plan or viability/longevity of the organization is should he step away or die.
Contempoary Jewish Museum (2 recommendations) They have excellent community engagement, ability to address the broad social engagement and impact of the visual arts, willingness to address difficult and controversial issues, ability to bring constituencies together and dispel stereotypes of many sorts, high-quality exhibitions, programs, and research, and creative approaches.
Contempoary Jewish Museum

Evidence of Impact

N
They have excellent community engagement, ability to address the broad social engagement and impact of the visual arts, willingness to address difficult and controversial issues, ability to bring constituencies together and dispel stereotypes of many sorts, high-quality exhibitions, programs, and research, and creative approaches.

Organizational Strengths

N
Their marketing, branding, and graphics are excellent and forward looking. Their outreach is excellent and their values (e.g. inclusivity) are communicated consistently and prominently.
N
They have a willingness to share ideas, resources, audiences, programs, etc. with other, often lesser known, nonprofits, thereby increasing the visibility and impact of both. They are promoting connectedness between the Jewish community/diaspora and other communities (for example, African American, LGBT, etc.). Lastly, they are providing age-appropriate content and programming for children and families.

Areas for Improvement

N
They should consider greater engagement of staff in peer networks locally. They could also develop a wider collaborative sphere.
N
Perhaps they could have a better online presence.
Creativity Explored (2 recommendations) Creativity Explored is an amazing organization that provides a studio space and brilliant staff to artists with developmental disabilities. This organization makes a huge IMPACT in the art world by treating artists with disabilities and their art as an important and equal part of the larger Bay Area arts community.

N
Creativity Explored is an amazing organization that provides a studio space and brilliant staff to artists with developmental disabilities. This organization makes a huge IMPACT in the art world by treating artists with disabilities and their art as an important and equal part of the larger Bay Area arts community.

Organizational Strengths

N
The staff members at this organization are incredibly committed and knowledgeable. Many of them have worked at this amazing organization for years and are very invested in their work.
N
They are providing artistic, social, and self-support/employment opportunities to adults with disabilities. Another strength is the fact that they are helping bring visibility to a traditionally marginalized group of artists, as well as supporting local art and artists.

Areas for Improvement

N
This organization, with funding permitted, could expand and serve more artists. They could also exhibit their art in galleries outside of the Bay Area.
N
They could use greater visibility in the community, as well as more art shows in different venues
Crowded Fire Theater Company (2 recommendations) They select plays that highlight under-represented voices expressed through bold and experimental voices, challenging conventional modes of thought around social and cultural stereotypes.
Crowded Fire Theater Company
Bronze-small

Evidence of Impact

N
They select plays that highlight under-represented voices expressed through bold and experimental voices, challenging conventional modes of thought around social and cultural stereotypes.
N
Crowded Fire does an extraordinary job of attracting younger audiences (20s-30s) to its artistically adventurous work and to nurturing emerging artists. Its small venues are "crowded" with a demographic that does not usually attend live theatre, and on its stage it gives voice to new and local artists.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have very strong leadership, and they're very engaged with the community conversation.
N
Crowded Fire, less than 15 years old, has already successfully transitioned from a founder-led group to becoming a real institution. Its current artistic and management leadership is young but highly talented and experienced, and own a firm vision of their theater's position in the Bay Area and beyond. Its leadership is highly collaborative and supportive of their peers.

Areas for Improvement

N
They don't have a venue yet, and are building out their marketing plan now. It's coming along well, but they need more resources to fully implement their ideas.
N
As the organization moves to a new venue, it will be challenged to keep its audiences and connect with a new community, especially since it will be located in a neighborhood with little public transportation and an older demographic. The organization could be advanced by fine-tuning its mission and brand identity.
Cutting Ball Theater (2 recommendations) They do extraordinary community work with their production of "TENDERLOIN." They have raised the cultural profile of their home neighborhood.
Cutting Ball Theater

Evidence of Impact

F
They do extraordinary community work with their production of "TENDERLOIN." They have raised the cultural profile of their home neighborhood.
N
In 12 years, this small company has created a national reputation for its groundbreaking work, which is avant garde in its aesthetic, focusing both on world premieres and inventively reimagined classics. Artistically, Cutting Ball adds a unique sensibility to the Bay Area theater scene, and it is committed to nurturing local artists.

Organizational Strengths

F
This is one of the Bay Area's most promising small theater companies. The organization enjoys outstanding artistic leadership in Rob Melrose (a rising star nationally). It has shown smart growth, especially in hiring its first managing director.
N
The theater has courageous artistic leadership with a strong and singular vision. It has grown its capacity to support that vision by strengthening its management and board leadership as well, positioning this company to make the transition to becoming a cultural institution.

Areas for Improvement

F
The theater may be outgrowing its space.
N
Cutting Ball has matured greatly with a permanent venue, but the location of that venue is literally scaring away potential audiences and donors. A move, even within its inner-city neighborhood, could strengthen its potential to grow while retaining its ties to the community. The theater's work would be furthered by hiring more union actors.
Dimensions Dance Theater (2 recommendations) Their impact can be seen in their work with children, the community, and their commitment to each.
Dimensions Dance Theater

Evidence of Impact

O
Their impact can be seen in their work with children, the community, and their commitment to each.
O
They have a strong vision for community engagement through art, a clear plan, and visibility.

Organizational Strengths

O
Their strengths are great marketing, production value, strong shows, and leadership.

Areas for Improvement

O
They need stronger administrative support and younger dancers.
O
They need to have more effort to connect critical scholarship around social change to their practical artistic work.
Frameline (2 recommendations) Their impact can be seen in their enormously successful film festival with a well-run program to support development of films.
Frameline

Evidence of Impact

O
Their impact can be seen in their enormously successful film festival with a well-run program to support development of films.
F
This organization has provided significant support to LGBT filmmakers, which have even fewer opportunities for financial support than most filmmakers. They have presented strong public programming of films related to the LGBT community, filling a need in the LGBT community, as well as a need for the general public, to be exposed to films related to the LGBT experience that might not otherwise be seen.

Organizational Strengths

O
They have broad outreach beyond the festival. They also have constant information released to the press, community, and constituents.
F
Their marketing is strong, as evidenced by the strong turnout to their film festivals. They have successfully moved forward with a new leader after their prior Executive Director retired.

Areas for Improvement

O
They could improve by expanding their impact even further and reach out to new and younger audiences. The Festival appears to be graying.
F
The organization's year-round public programs could be better promoted and better attended.
Gray Area Foundation For The Arts (2 recommendations) GAFFTA has demonstrated that art and technology are essential to healthy cities. With such initiatives as Creative Currency and UPFest, they have shown that crowd sourcing solutions that bridge the gaps between sectors ensure equitable civic change.
Gray Area Foundation For The Arts

Evidence of Impact

N
GAFFTA has demonstrated that art and technology are essential to healthy cities. With such initiatives as Creative Currency and UPFest, they have shown that crowd sourcing solutions that bridge the gaps between sectors ensure equitable civic change.
O
The Urban Prototyping Festival is a high-impact initiative encouraging artists/technologists to be adventurous and creative in testing new solutions for the urban environment.

Organizational Strengths

N
GAFFTA has a strong staff that represent a broad community of leaders in art, technology, activism, and social enterprise. They create programs that are both innovative and immediately relevant to the issues pressing our city.
O
They are entrepreneurial and well connected. They are also masters of promotion and partnership.

Areas for Improvement

N
GAFFTA could work on their marketing, as it is sometimes hard to understand what exactly they are up to and why it is impactful.
O
It is a nice exhibition, but how many of these prototypes actually have a life beyond that initial stage? Are these really artists or creative technologists? Is there a difference? Is everyone an artist? Are the arts being instrumentalized? Is there room for arts for art's sake in this prototyping environment? Is this initiative about the arts or social enterprise?
Kadist Art Foundation (2 recommendations) This organization interacts with various organizations and institutions and does not mainly stay within their own physical space.
Kadist Art Foundation

Evidence of Impact

N
This organization interacts with various organizations and institutions and does not mainly stay within their own physical space.

Organizational Strengths

N
Kadist SF is able to collect and curate contemporary artworks and is based promoting arts as the cultural catalyst for society today. Their nonprofit organization is both small yet extensive in their outreach for both San Francisco and Paris, fitting each discussion and exhibition to the context of their environment and community they seek to reach.
R
One strength is their extraordinarily high intellectual quality of programming.

Areas for Improvement

N
They could use more outreach towards the contemporary Asian Art communities and provide a chance for people to intern at Kadist, or volunteer.
R
They could reach out to more audiences. They sometimes seems a bit cliquey and cloistered in the private art school crowd.
Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (2 recommendations) Their impact is the long-term support for a company of dancers and for changing the ecology of dance, making it available not only in the Bay Area, but in Los Angeles. They have a commitment to cultural exchange.
Margaret Jenkins Dance Company

Evidence of Impact

F
Their impact is the long-term support for a company of dancers and for changing the ecology of dance, making it available not only in the Bay Area, but in Los Angeles. They have a commitment to cultural exchange.
O
With outreach, their own space, the chime program, and performances, this is an under-recognized gem.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have strong artistic leadership.
O
Margaret's leadership is a key strength.
Montalvo Arts Center (2 recommendations) Montalvo Arts Center has and continues to make a huge impact through a diverse presentation, celebration, and active engagement throughout the Greater South Bay area and beyond through their multimedia programming in visual, music, theater, performance, artist residency, and other creative programs. The balance of recognition from amongst the visual arts, artist residency, and music/performance/theater programs draws a very strong loyal following and audience. Programming is year-round, and the caliber of work celebrates local to international talents and artistic credibility.

N
They offer accessible programs for the public, across visual and musical genres, coupled with the beautiful natural park surroundings.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong, experienced, visionary leadership at the Executive Director position. They also have strong, experienced staff members, volunteer base, and actively engaged and committed Board, which are the key strengths of this organization, combined with an absolutely one-of-a-kind gorgeous, historic setting, facilities, and expansive maintained grounds located in the hillside of Saratoga, CA.
N
The curatorial staff and sense of joy and playfulness in the programming are key assets.

Areas for Improvement

N
Following recent collaborative joint efforts and shared programming with other arts groups in the region, this direction would be a natural direction to emphasize even more with other arts groups from throughout the Santa Clara County. This would make an impact on engaging new audiences and presenting even larger or more inclusive depth to existing programs and projects. Also, for all groups in the region in general to work together even further than what currently exists to promote this entire region as a center for the arts. This could impact new awareness, shared audiences, and new audiences in all areas of outreach, marketing, publicity, membership, etc...
New Conservatory Theatre Center (2 recommendations) NCTC does great work in creating original theater for youth around social issues of importance like bullying, or AIDS awareness and prevention. Schools can have students attend for free at NCTC, or they tour to get the message out beyond the city limits. I have attended these programs with my school-age child and her class. The presentations are meaningful because they are fact-based and don't skirt issues that teachers or parents might have a hard time addressing in an age-appropriate, but fact-based way. They have a good children's theater program which emphasizes improvisation and teamwork rather than scripted memorization. It builds creativity and cooperation, which are skills the public schools don't spend much time on. NCTC also fills a need in the Bay Area for professional-level gay-themed dramatic productions, helping the LGBT see their own stories reflected on stage.

NCTC also fills a need in the Bay Area for professional-level gay-themed dramatic productions, helping the LGBT see their own stories reflected on stage.
N
NCTC has become the leading GLBT theater in the Bay Area, and perhaps the nation, investing heavily in new and contemporary plays, giving voice to both emerging and established playwrights, and nurturing actors and other theater artists, while reaching a wide audience. NCTC also has a superb training program for children and youth and a robust touring program that brings to students across Northern California original theater pieces that are highly relevant, even controversial to teens in cities and rural areas.

Organizational Strengths

O
NCTC spent last year creating a strategic plan, which was created with input from all stakeholders be they subscribers to the gay-themed adult theater productions or parents of students or neighbors who may or may not attend presently, staff, Board Members, etc. NCTC has a dedicated staff that work well as a team.
N
The organization has excellent and experienced leadership that enables it to produce in three theaters simultaneously, run its youth theater training classes, and manage its school touring program—an enormous output for a mid-sized organization. NCTC has a strong commitment to new work, launching world premieres, and consistently producing seasons full of West Coast and Bay Area premieres. It is perhaps the only GLBT theater in the country with a youth conservatory and school touring program—both programs are highly regarded.

Areas for Improvement

O
NCTC could do better at promoting their school-age tolerance presentations to parents and families. NCTC would benefit from better software for invoicing those who take their classes.
N
NCTC could further professionalize its artist pool by hiring more union actors, and it could sharpen its efforts to reach younger GLBT audiences. Perhaps they could do this by building on its successful training and school programs.
Out Of Site - Center For Arts Education (2 recommendations) Out of Site is a stellar youth arts organization. In addition to effectively serving the students who directly participate in their afterschool program, Out of Site also builds strong alliances with other youth organizations for their annual Youth Arts Summit.
N
Out of Site Youth Arts Center offers free comprehensive studio arts classes to public school students in San Francisco. They also help teachers get valuable teaching experience.

Organizational Strengths

N
Out of Site has amazing staff and teaching artists. In addition, they offer unique, exciting, and very relevant programming to high school youth.

Areas for Improvement

N
They do a lot with a very small staff and could probably use at least one more full-time staff person.
Performing Arts Workshop (2 recommendations) They are leaders in the field of innovative, outcomes-based arts education.
Performing Arts Workshop
Gold-small

Evidence of Impact

N
They are leaders in the field of innovative, outcomes-based arts education.
N
They are an excellent service provider of arts to youth.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong staff leadership and a history of developing emerging arts leaders that have gone on to leadership positions at other Bay Area arts organizations.
N
They do strong work in outreach and program development.

Areas for Improvement

N
They could use broader marketing to increase earned revenue. They could also use a larger Board of Directors with more fundraising and marketing experience.
N
They could increase cross-disciplinary partnerships with non-performing arts.
Playwrights Foundation (2 recommendations) Playwrights Foundation continues to foster the development of new work, with an impressive balance of national and local artists. Their commitment to co-producing new work is a national model and brings work to fruition that might not otherwise see full production.
Playwrights Foundation

Evidence of Impact

N
Playwrights Foundation continues to foster the development of new work, with an impressive balance of national and local artists. Their commitment to co-producing new work is a national model and brings work to fruition that might not otherwise see full production.
N
They help cultivate the voices of tomorrow. Many of the plays they develop go on to larger success, both regionally and nationally.

Organizational Strengths

N
Playwrights Foundation also has a strong commitment to year-round educational opportunity, to artists that would not have access to these very specific topics elsewhere, led by nationally renowned artists. Playwrights Foundation manages to accomplish these tasks on a very lean budget, speaking to sound fiscal management.
N
They have a savvy selection of artists to support, and they are involved with co-productions with theater companies across the Bay Area.

Areas for Improvement

N
Every playwright development organization could benefit from maximizing its development of local artists, and while Playwrights Foundation's commitment to local artists is profound, it could be even bigger. I'm not sure that the Foundation is as visible to the greater community as it could be.

Evidence of Impact

O
Pro Arts Gallery is one of the oldest and longest running art organizations in the Bay Area. It has served over 1,000 members and an audience of over 72,000 annually.
N
Pro Arts has helped create a vibrant monthly art event in Oakland that has dramatically increased arts opportunities for audiences and artists and gallery spaces.

Organizational Strengths

O
One strength of the organization is its increases in art advocacy programs with municipal county support to improve the awareness of art and art education. Pro Arts also continues to be a hub for the Oakland Arts in serving and nurturing emerging and mid-career artists. It was and is the foundation for many successful artists today.
N
Pro Arts has been a leader in community arts organizing and has helped to create great marketing programs that have increased visibility throughout the Bay Area.

Areas for Improvement

O
This organization can improve on expanding its staff to take additional youth programs and a marketing team to help further promote its importance to the arts in the Bay Area.
N
Pro Arts could do a better job of being inclusive of other types of arts. Their focus has traditionally been on fine artists, but there is an entire community of industrial artists that are not represented or shown in the monthly gallery events.
San Francisco Opera Association (2 recommendations) They have a strong commitment to expanding the repertoire of American opera, and top-notch production values.
San Francisco Opera Association

Evidence of Impact

F
They have a strong commitment to expanding the repertoire of American opera, and top-notch production values.
N
Contrary to the experience of opera companies in other cities, under David Gockley, the Opera has vastly expanded its audiences and has begun the steady process of expanding its repertoire. Its work with new technologies to offer access through HD showings in movie theaters and the annual opera in the ballpark have changed many people's perceptions about Opera.

Organizational Strengths

F
Their strengths are their visionary leadership, responsible budgeting, consolidation of venues, and educational activities.
N
They offer strong leadership and very strong marketing.

Areas for Improvement

N
Opera is an expensive art form, and cultural funding is harder and harder to come by. They need more money.
San Jose Institute Of Contemporary Art (2 recommendations) They provide one of the only contemporary galleries in the area.

This is a very vital service to artists who cannot afford (or do not want) to go to art school. In fact, art schools are not focusing on these skills as much as they used to.
N
The Crucible is extremely accessible as an arts organization. Its mix of industrial arts, youth and adult workshops, and public programs is uniquely Bay Area.

Organizational Strengths

O
It seems that all those involved are very committed and love what they do.
N
Their strengths are in their programming: education, demonstration, and public events.

Areas for Improvement

O
There is a perception that this organization is very closely linked to Burning Man. It might be nice for them to actively try to diversify away from that perception by initiating some new programming that is not thematically or aesthetically linked to Burning Man.
N
The Crucible could increase and improve in the areas of public presentation and marketing. Although I know they endeavor to serve as a public space for their community, they could improve and refine programming and marketing that welcomes West Oakland residents fully into their space. (Intergenerational, African-American Community of West Oakland.)
Triton Museum Of Art (Tma) (2 recommendations) They are the only museum in the area that focuses on exposure for regional artists. It is difficult or impossible to find venues to exhibit with the exception of the Triton.
Triton Museum Of Art (Tma)

Evidence of Impact

R
They are the only museum in the area that focuses on exposure for regional artists. It is difficult or impossible to find venues to exhibit with the exception of the Triton.
F
This museum supports LOCAL artists in a big way. They have very exciting shows that are very well attended. They attract museum-goers young and old, singles, couples, families, people of all colors, all walks of life and economic levels. The organization defies the stereotypical museum-goer crowd.

Organizational Strengths

R
The focus of the organization is a real strength. With more funding they could use additional staff. Everyone works extremely hard for very little money to make this work.
F
All that I can say is 'leadership leadership leadership!' They have a commitment to the community and to local artists. They are a free museum, making it accessible to all. They also offer free services for emerging artists (e.g. portfolio review) and lots of exposure/promotion for local artists. This is a beautiful venue, and they put it to good use.

They often have huge group exhibits with too many pieces in order to help fund their vision. Refinement of the group exhibits would help gain respect.
F
I wish they could grow their budget to beef up marketing. More people need to know about this gem.

O
Where would we be without large-scale general operating awards? The funds that Hewlett delivers to the Bay Area are vital and probably on their own Hewlett is responsible for close to one-third of why the Bay Area is what it is as a cultural landscape.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong leadership, staffing, operations and research contributions
O
Hewlett is embracing of a wide range of organizations, able to find ways to be both very deep and at times even hands-on in the community while also dealing with questions of a much larger scope. I feel they are building a portfolio that is not agenda-driven so much as it is deeply responsive to its environment. I feel Hewlett engages and imagines with you, rather than telling you what to do. The program officers are fantastic, knowledgeable, approachable, and truly understand their role as advocates and leaders without being kingmakers. The breadth of their work and whom it affects is a testament not to deep pockets, but careful and rigorous methodology.

Areas for Improvement

O
The application itself is pretty frustrating and essentially counter-intuitive to what the foundation's actual message is. The measures it demands and the way it demands them lack the nuance, sophistication, or vitality that the organization clearly promotes and believes in.
World Arts West (2 recommendations) They have a broad range of impact on dance companies throughout the Bay Area.

O
WAW/EDF break boundaries and defy expectations while preserving, and even evolving traditional culture. Not many organizations can claim that. They are virtually unduplicated in the country, and they speak with deep expression about core values in the region—particularly cultural diversity and cultural identity. The organization does an amazing job of walking the difficult line between presenting concert dance and presenting culture—so much of what they share with us is not meant for concert performance, it is practiced as a participatory form of celebration or spiritual expression, or simply as a culture-bearing activity in daily life in its natural context. EDF manages to get not just the pageantry on stage, but the true intention of the cultural practice, and that is really rare. They also have a hybrid curation/community engagement process that is out of this world—their audition series.

Areas for Improvement

N
Their publicity within community college and university campuses is poor. I would also suggest better ticket offers and group discounts for the disadvantaged or senior community.
O
The organization focuses only on local and regional artists. It could be an international platform that would radically change the landscape of culturally specific arts presented in this country. That is a missed opportunity there.
100 Black Men of The Bay Area (1 recommendation) I see the things that 100 Black Men are doing for the community. They are enhancing youth in the arts, as well as better understanding their culture. Organizational Strengths

O
Leadership is great because they appear to be consistent nationwide. They came from all over the US to McClymonds last year for a STEM Faire and everything was consistent. Marketing their programs appears to be marketed sufficiently. Whenever they are spearheading a program, the information is well known.

Areas for Improvement

O
They could improve on their financing—they need more resources and finances to do more for the community, and then they can extend their programs. Operations could be tighter if they had the personnel to fill in the needed infrastructure of their organization. With both of these things in place they will be able to provide more programs outside of art and cultural.

Organizational Strengths

N
ACT has strong leadership with Artistic Director Carey Perloff and Managing Director Ellen Richards. ACT succeeds in creating national partnerships that allow important projects to come to town that might not be supported otherwise (the recent Normal Heart, for instance).

Areas for Improvement

N
The Bay Area arts community is looking to ACT to continue its deep investment in local artists, not only with such efforts as the Costume Shop, but hopefully by increasing hiring opportunities for local artists on the main stage. The local field would also like to see more direct, cultivating partnerships with local, smaller producing companies and artists (new play development).

Brisbane Dance Workshop (1 recommendation) This organization has been providing dance & theater training to children 3 to 17 for the past 30 years. No interested student is turned away. Scholarships are provided to whomever asks. Students are involved in technical classes for eight months and spend two months in the performance process. The Board of this organization is a working volunteer board—members do all administrative work and all costuming and set designs for their shows. Due to the small town's location and the fact that it has a large percentage of working parents, for most students BDW offers only a means of being involved in the performing arts.

California Film Institute (1 recommendation) They offer world-class programming for their annual festival, which has a significant impact on Marin and beyond. They feature an excellent selection of films for the Rafael Theatre, a venue for alternative, art, and indie films in San Rafael. They have a strong program for youth—introducing them to filmmaking. They are great at risk taking. They have an entrepreneurial mindset, passion, dedicated staff and volunteers, and a national reach.

Areas for Improvement

O
I wonder if their business model could be refined so that musicians could be paid. They are entrepreneurial in the sense that they engage in creative destruction, making old models—the symphony system—seem somewhat obsolete, and they are creating great artistic, social, and cultural value, but I'm not sure about revenue. In the long run, this may be a determining factor in their sustainability.
Community Housing Partnership (1 recommendation) CHP houses formerly homeless families and individuals in a supportive housing program. Their program includes job training and interview skill training, which in turn involves a talent show and getting residents to use their innate talents to perform for each other and then at an annual fundraising Night of the Stars performance. They bring the performers and all the residents of their housing projects into a beautiful theater for a night of performances and celebration of all they have achieved. For-Site Foundation (1 recommendation) FOR-SITE produces large-scale, public, site-specific art projects and exhibitions in San Francisco. They bring in artists from all over the world and show them in locations that are highly visible/accessible for the general public, tourists, and the art community. I think the most important impact they make is to bridge the art audience with the general public, creating an opportunity for better art awareness amongst individuals, while providing poignant and engaging projects that are relevant to a contemporary art dialog. They provide an important niche that is under-represented in the Bay Area—temporary public art that is critically engaging (ala Creative Time or the Public Art Fund in New York). There is often a historical or ecological context to the artwork shown based on the site it is located in; this provides opportunities to learn about interesting subjects in non-typical learning environments through contemporary art. They also encourage locals to become tourists in their own city—to get to areas of San Francisco they might not otherwise see, and this creates opportunities for people to get outdoors, to sight-see in other ways, and to spend money along the way on food, etc.

The organization is run by Cheryl Haines, whom I haven't worked with personally, but from witnessing the ease and determination of her team I feel confident this comes from a leader who knows how to pick good staff and manage that staff properly. They also have strong marketing, branding, and publicity. They have made a great web platform for their current exhibition, International Orange, which includes multimedia and social components. The branding of the collateral, signage, etc. is superb and there has been great press coverage of the exhibition.

Areas for Improvement

O
I think the main improvement would be for them to do more; they are relatively unknown because one of their primary operations is running an invitation-only residency in the foothills of the Sierras. If they continue to do more site-specific projects that are publicly accessible in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area I think this will help—consistent and continued programming is key.

They have also expanded their public programming for audiences.

Organizational Strengths

F
The organization has excellent leadership with a dedicated, hard-working, and intelligent Executive Director and a strong Board of Directors. They have expanded their public presence with a new website and a marketing initiative to attract artists and the general public. The organization successfully achieved their goals with their 30th Anniversary Campaign to provide a solid financial footing for their new programs.

Areas for Improvement

F
Like many nonprofits, the organization is understaffed and risks burnout of the current staff and leader if this cannot be addressed. They will need to conduct a capital campaign for improvements in the near future, and must have the staffing capabilities to carry out the campaign successfully.

Impact Theatre does an extraordinary job of attracting college students and other young adults to the theatre—two groups not often seen at larger houses! They also do an extraordinary job of nurturing emerging theater artists such as playwrights, actors, directors, and designers.

Organizational Strengths

N
Impact Theatre has a 75-seat venue located in the basement of a pizza parlor just two blocks from UC Berkeley, where it acts like a magnet to draw in younger audiences, bringing to live theater a demographic that is 30 years younger than the average theater-goer. The theater's leadership is similarly committed to nurturing emerging artists—actors, directors, designers, and playwrights—and to producing world premieres.

Areas for Improvement

N
The theater's iconic location also limits its artistic capacity (very low ceilings in an oddly shaped space). The theater could stand to sharpen its grant writing and contributed income to increase its capacity.
Jazzschool (1 recommendation) The Jazzschool does a marvelous job of providing music education to a hugely diverse population: people of all ages study here, and serious musicians learn alongside aspiring professionals, passionate hobbyists, and ordinary people who just want a fun break from day-to-day life. As our society continues to cut its investment in arts education, this is an essential resource for children and teens in our community. For adults, it is an invaluable place to tap into the joy of music while fostering skills such as creativity, collaboration, and flexibility, which are essential in music and in the wider world.

I am astonished by the deep experience of the school's faculty. In one class, I observed the fine work of the teacher and only later thought to look up the accompanist, who had played beautifully and with real sensitivity to the needs of each student. I was amazed to discover that he had performed with giants in the field and on several Grammy-winning recordings. This place is the real deal. The design of the space is an important part of the vibrant camaraderie that infuses the Jazzschool. The central cafe area provides a meeting place that allows for informal social interaction that deepens connections among the students and with their instructors as well—and it doubles as a friendly, comfortable performance venue. Very nice.

Areas for Improvement

N
I believe that the school would benefit from a deeper investment in marketing, outreach, and media relations. I believe it is underappreciated for what it offers and could attain a higher public profile.

Organizational Strengths

O
In regards to financing they have been able to do a lot with a little. This is why volunteering is crucial for this organization—no one was on payroll. Staffing was great because they were able to maintain these two above-mentioned programs and others for over three years and counting, all with volunteers. Everything that they have done has been professional and not lacking at all.

Areas for Improvement

O
The lion's share of the workload was limited to a few due to not having the ability to hire personnel, so it made it hard. Everyone volunteering either had a job or was a full-time student. Financing with more resources and income, more things can be done and more people can be helped. They were asked by several other entities to participate or to add things to their existing programs but were unable to due to lack of finances.

The Center is founded on dance values that support community, and in a climate of strong, local community, it has launched some of the most important young artists on the scene with no theater—only dance studios converted by lights—to do so. Evidence of Impact

N
I've been to a couple of their events as well as seen them co-present at community events. Their program has a direct and exciting impact on the youth they serve by giving students a voice through writing and media.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have a great social media team which makes it easy for other organizations and supports to see the impact of their work.

Areas for Improvement

N
I think they use a lot of temporary workers, which can be a really great way to get new ideas, but doesn't make for necessarily sustainable actions.
Symphony Silicon Valley (1 recommendation) They are committed to opening up opportunities for musicians to earn a living in their chosen art form, and creating partnerships to provide arts education for the entire county.

N
TAO is the only teaching artist-focused organization in the Bay Area. They are leading a statewide coalition in support of teaching artists that is supported by the California Arts Council.

Organizational Strengths

N
A recent investment by the Michelson Family Foundation means that this organization can grow and do the work it is intending to do—grow its membership of teaching artists and professionalize the field.

Areas for Improvement

N
They are going through a leadership transition from an Executive Director-led start-up to an executive committee-led membership organization; the future is one of opportunity and risk for TAO. They have great potential to change the face of the field of teaching artistry—now a very undeveloped field—and their executive committee is committed to that vision.
Teatro Vision (1 recommendation) They are an extremely dedicated, long-lived Latino company. They are a gift to the community.

Its youth program continues to serve young people in Western Addition who need affordable afterschool care and counseling.

Organizational Strengths

N
Because of its funding model, AAACC is able to provide significant venue and technical support to artist- and community-led initiatives, resulting in truly community-based programming. AAACC offers many neighborhood-based programs and programs rooted in African-American art and culture, and this has solidified their core audience, but they are not afraid to challenge and entertain that audience with programming that celebrates other cultures as well.

Areas for Improvement

N
AAACC relies heavily on city funding and could ensure long-lasting stability of the organization by diversifying its revenue.

This accredited museum has maintained a focused pursuit of their mission and vision consistently and successfully.

Areas for Improvement

The Oakland Citizens Committee For Urban Renewal (Occur)

Evidence of Impact

O
They are a community and culturally based organization designed to help the community and other nonprofit organizations to become empowered. They offer an array of programs, and I have attended a few of their workshops.

Organizational Strengths

O
Despite the limited staff, they seem to have frequent—at least one per quarter or every other month—workshops. The workshops are well attended, easily located, and usually in a nice environment and location. David Glover does an excellent job networking, building community, and empowering others through these programs and workshops.

Areas for Improvement

O
In regards to staffing, with such a limited amount they could do more which can provide him with a little more breathing room to entertain other workshops and programs. They also need finances to hire the personnel required to facilitate and assist with the operations, programs, and workshops.
The SF Playhouse (1 recommendation) In only a decade, Bill English and Susi Damilano have built San Francisco Playhouse from an idea into one of the top 10 theaters in the Bay Area. This is no small feat, as their only peers have been on the scene for 20 or 40 years. SF Playhouse regularly presents a smart and provocative season that introduces local audiences to important artists and terrific scripts that they can't see on other stages. (In fact, a subscription here is a much better investment than a season at ACT—for the money, for the entertainment, and for the intellectual experience.) They have started to deepen their investment in local writers, which is a very welcome development, and just moved to a new theater space. Here's hoping they continue to thrive for another decade.

Organizational Strengths

N
Unlike some of their bigger counterparts, San Francisco Playhouse generally employs local actors, directors, and designers. (Hopefully they can start paying them more generously and more promptly.)

Areas for Improvement

N
To sustain this excellence, San Francisco Playhouse must grow up and become a mature organization. It needs a professional marketing and development staff, and a realistic plan to keep its finances in the black.
Theoffcenter (1 recommendation) Artists supported by The Off Center have received breakthrough opportunities as well as venue/technical, outreach, and documentation support. Over the past three years numerous artists who got their first "break" with help of The Off Center have leveraged that opportunity to get other, bigger grants and work with established artists and larger organizations.

Over the past three years numerous artists who got their first "break" with help of The Off Center have leveraged that opportunity to get other, bigger grants and work with established artists and larger organizations.

Organizational Strengths

N
This organization is very resourceful and able to "fight above their weight," producing high-quality events online and in person with production and design values and artistic quality that is exceptional. They are also able to mobilize a large audience that embraces a wide range of their activities regardless of where that activity is located. This makes them a desirable partner for organizations that wish to reach a younger audience, or an LGBTQI audience.

Areas for Improvement

N
As this organization grows, the founding members become less willing and able to do everything for free or on a shoestring budget. In response, this organization is working on business and strategic planning.

The annual fundraising show and sale is a marvelous event where the artists and their supporters come together. It is unique to have the donors and the recipients in one room for a celebration.

Areas for Improvement

They could do a better job understanding who their funders are and making better use of crowd sourcing through social media.

Young Audiences Of Northern California (Yanc) (1 recommendation) In the last few years YA-NC has really stepped up as the organization representing and promoting arts education and advocating for arts in the schools. They have done so by making their artist roster stronger, providing their artists with professional development, and by speaking to the media about the needs for arts in the schools.
