Evidence of Impact

F
The Community Music Center provides music instruction to over 2,000 children and adults each year. Also, more than 15,000 people attended performances at the center. It is one of the oldest community music schools in the country.
R
CMC is the premier all-purpose music center serving a very wide range, especially low-income, population in San Francisco and one of the best in the country. With a sliding scale of tuition, it provides music training in all fields to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument or sing. It also sponsors performances by its students throughout the year.
N
This organization provides quality music education programs to a very large constituency at very affordable prices. This is especially important as music education in schools is declining so rapidly.
N
CMC is long-time well established, with reliable music programs for individuals and families.
N
They reach a wide range of participants with low cost music instruction.

Organizational Strengths

F
CMC has developed good programs with the San Francisco Unified School District to enhance school music programs for low-income youth of color. This organization has an experienced and strong executive director.
R
They have two main strengths. Their durability: they have been able to survive the vagaries of funding and changing demographics and interests for a century. They have a superb leader in Steve Shapiro, who manages well their very wide and complex range of services and programs.
N
They seem to be very well known in the community and they draw a large student body. Their teachers are really well superb.
N
Having a long term director has provided great continuity and attention to best practices.
N
They have strengths in their long term leadership.

Areas for Improvement

F
As mentioned, CMC has a strong, long-serving executive director. The organization will need to develop a leadership transition plan in the next few years. CMC maintains a sliding scale fee structure and there is always pressure to generate enough contributed income to subsidize tuition for low-income students.
R
They will be challenged by having to find a new leader when Shapiro retires in the next few years. They need to build a significantly larger endowment to survive the financial pressures of the future.
N
They make the most of the limited space in their facility on Capp Street, but they could definitely use more space. They could also benefit from having a more robust instrument collection to offer to students in need.
N
They continually need ongoing operating support.
La Pena Cultural Center (5 recommendations) Founded in 1975, La Pena Cultural Center is a multicultural community arts center whose mission is to promote preface, social justice, and cultural understanding through the arts, education, and community action. It is a vibrant community cultural center with national reputation and a global vision. La Pena provides opportunities to cultivate artistic traditions, create and share work, and engage with progressive social movements. Annually La Rena presents over 200 events with emerging and established artists, provides an arts education program, commissions and produces new works by local artists, presents internationally and nationally renowned artists, and houses a Latin American cafe. La Pena serves over 26,000 people each year.

Annually La Rena presents over 200 events with emerging and established artists, provides an arts education program, commissions and produces new works by local artists, presents internationally and nationally renowned artists, and houses a Latin American cafe. La Pena serves over 26,000 people each year.
F
The long term impact of La Pena is its role as a model for a cultural center focused on peace and social justice in a demographically evolving community. Its connection with and relevance for its community is well regarded in the national landscape. La Pena has continued relevance and importance for the people it serves, characteristics that most arts institutions are struggling to establish. It has a strong history of support to artists of national and local significance.
N
La Peña consistently presents a wide variety of world artists of the highest artistic caliber and often deepens the impact of these programs by having the same artists provide workshops and lecture series type events to the community. Events are well attended and many audience members are open to attending events in other genres and traditions that they have not experienced in the past.
F
La Pena has a long history of reflecting their community through arts programming that addresses issues of peace and social justice. La Pena offers free music workshops with top artists. Programming is diverse, high quality, intergenerational and with a focus on the next generation.
N
This organization is a great resource and unique in the quality and diversity of its music programming.

Organizational Strengths

F
La Pena has been in direct service to the community for over 35 years. This stability and longevity is remarkable. They also serve an extremely diverse population.
F
The leadership is in a healthy transition. The longtime administrative and artistic staff are transitioning out of the organization while mentoring the next generation of leaders that are addressing current issues relevant to the community. The financial operations has strengthened and stabilized over the past few years.
N
La Peña supports and encourages collaborative programming and events. This is a great strength of their programming. La Peña also uses a system of collaborating with field experts to "curate" a show-- this expands the depth of artistic knowledge of the staff and allows La Peña access to high quality artists that they might not have contact with otherwise. La Peña is also great about opening its space to local artists to provide programming to the community. These popular shows, too, are beneficial to the community as well as a great support to the artists, allowing them access to space!
F
La Pena utilizes strategic partnerships to better connect with specific communities and better share resources.
N
They have strong social consciousness and dedicated leadership, strong connections to the community, and a center for Latin music presenting.

Areas for Improvement

F
They have identified a need to work with and reach out to a new and younger group of artists and have plans to do this through a new strategic plan. I think this is an area in which they can improve and they are taking steps to do just that.
F
It needs to address its financial stability while maintaining programmatic and artistic activities.
N
La Peña could use improvement in production and technical support-- although it may not be possible. The stage set-up limits programming-- very little lighting options one small, stage right entrance to the stage, and a very small stage space. Also, sound production and other multi-media options are limited. The space is most conducive to musical concerts.
Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (5 recommendations) Approaching four decades of making challenging choreography in the San Francisco Bay Area, CHIME, a mentorship program, pairs established choreographers with an emerging one in a very effective way and produces collaborations that require the artists to go far deeper in exploring the meaning and implications of collaboration than most typical high profile collaborations.

N
Approaching four decades of making challenging choreography in the San Francisco Bay Area, CHIME, a mentorship program, pairs established choreographers with an emerging one in a very effective way and produces collaborations that require the artists to go far deeper in exploring the meaning and implications of collaboration than most typical high profile collaborations.
N
When Margaret Jenkins introduced the CHIME program in 2005, an amazing support system was created for what is otherwise a very under-supported segment of the dance community: mid-career artists. There are very few resources available to help mid-career artists successfully continue to develop their craft. This mentorship program has been excellently crafted to do just that, by providing financial support, free studio space, and a facilitated mentorship with a leader in the field.
O
Inter-continental collaborations have stretched the art form. MJDC's program to further careers of young choreographers is exemplary.
N
I am interested in improving choreography throughout the area, state, nation, and world. This mentorship project allows choreographers to improve their dance-making skills with support.
N
Margaret Jenkins has noteworthy work and collaboration with other countries.

Organizational Strengths

N
Their artistic vision and direct support to artists to make their work are among their strengths. Artistic Director Jenkins is also an extremely articulate advocate for the dance and the performing arts in general.
N
The long term stability and resources available to MJDC has allowed this organization to thoughtfully implement the CHIME program in the San Francisco Bay Area, and successfully introduce CHIME in Southern California, as well as across borders. They have also brought in a thoughtful selection committee to ensure a diverse pool of recipients for the CHIME award.
O
As the artistic vision, Margie is amazing.
N
Both mentor and mentee get paid and there is a diversity of selectees.
N
Margie is a strong visionary leader with a great skill in bringing a team together to share resources, ideas, and art. I see her as an ambassador to our city.

Areas for Improvement

N
While the CHIME program is an important part of the companies work, it would be wonderful to see MJDC continue to grow as a leader in providing opportunities for artistic development. In addition, they would benefit from developing thoughtful partnerships to further increase CHIME's impact and reach in the San Francisco Bay Area.
N
They need to collaborate with other organizations so they don't have to get bigger. They can keep doing what they do best, but need to connect their selectees with other resources, such as funders, dancer groups, dance education groups that focus on choreography , performance presenters, "business of dance" consultants, and public relations experts.
N
It would be nice if Margie were to embrace the local community of other artists a bit more.
Community School of Music and Arts (4 recommendations) They provide classes and inspiration for children and families in Silicon Valley while paying close attention to reaching at risk children.
Community School of Music and Arts

http://www.arts4all.org/

Evidence of Impact

N
They provide classes and inspiration for children and families in Silicon Valley while paying close attention to reaching at risk children.
F
They are the largest provider of arts education for children in the South Bay/Silicon Valley region. They have a school, as well, go-to schools with arts education programs. They have highly professional teachers and staff.
F
They have wide reach into the community through their classes, workshops, performances, and exhibits.
N
CSMA has had a very positive impact to the Mountain View, Los Altos, Sunnyvale area by offering quality art and music programs to the community. They are a valuable resource, not only for their impact on the children who take classes at their site, but also for their presence in schools in the area. There would be a true void without them.

Organizational Strengths

N
They have strong leadership and earned income model.
F
They consistently grow and improve their offerings. They will soon be expanding their new facility in Mountain View, which, in these days, is no small feat.
F
A major indication of strength is an organization's ability to make smooth transitions. They have had changes in location with five different sites before moving into its own building in 2003 and in leadership, as Jeffry Walker is the 9th Executive Director. Through these changes, CSMA has always "delivered" and therefore has been supported by the community.
N
Jeffrey Walker's tenure at CSMA is relatively short one. I haven't heard positives or negatives about his managerial impact.

Areas for Improvement

N
They should grow programs and attract resources that benefit at risk children.
F
They could use additional resources for visibility of what they do. While the parents and schools know of their good work, the general public is largely unaware, which is an ongoing challenge in the arts.
F
Like other nonprofit art-education organizations, CSMA could offer higher wages to its year-round teaching artists, as visiting artists usually get higher fees.
N
The staff had to take a cut in salary to offset losses rather than cut programming. Additional funding would help this organization's bottom line.
Destiny Arts Center (4 recommendations) This organization works in a economically challenged part of Oakland that is greatly impacted by violence and issues that arise from poverty. Destiny Arts does an impeccable job at teaching skills of non-violence and conflict resolution while developing strong skills in movement, with martial arts, dance, etc. They have also been able to secure good support for their programming and have great visibility in their base community and with other partners.

Destiny Arts does an impeccable job at teaching skills of non-violence and conflict resolution while developing strong skills in movement, with martial arts, dance, etc. They have also been able to secure good support for their programming and have great visibility in their base community and with other partners.
N
For over 20 years, Destiny has been setting a high watermark for arts-based youth development with its movement arts programs, which are a combination of dance and martial art instruction delivered through the lens of violence prevention and conflict resolution. A hallmark of Destiny's approach is youth involvement in creative decision-making, resulting in a cascade of original dance theater created by championship martial arts athletes. Destiny cultivates an environment of agency among the youth it serves, which are 150 each year at its facility and thousands more through the Oakland public schools, connecting them with lofty and completely practical strategies for peace and justice in their own, often dangerous, communities. Destiny has documented its techniques in a curriculum guide that continues to be an important resource for educators and youth developers.
N
This organization encourages and fosters young performers. I have seen the power of learning in the arts and what it does for young people. The organization helps build self esteem with youth.
N
They offer diverse and many at-risk youth populations in Oakland a place to go to and an outlet for their creativity. Their mission has a profound impact on their community. Destiny, which stands for De-Escalation Skills Training Inspiring Nonviolence in Youth, Arts Center exists to end isolation, prejudice, and violence in the lives of young people.

Organizational Strengths

F
The staff is very committed. Many have been with the organization for many years but they also infuse the organization with new energy. There is an immense respect and support for teaching artists as well.
N
Destiny does this work on a shoestring, pouring its never-enough resources into the teaching moment between instructor and student. Despite challenges in the after-school and cultural funding economies, they maintain a healthy ratio between earned and contributed income and have been able to retain a dedicated staff of respected artists and youth developers who embody the organization's mission.
N
The organization has a committed executive director and a committed artistic director who give strength to their programs.
N
They do wonderful outreach within communities. Their staff is diverse and seems to bring various skills and experiences to the table.

Areas for Improvement

F
Although I can speak to their strengths, the challenges they grapple with don't come to mind. That's not to say that they are perfect but I do feel that they use their resources very well.
N
Destiny is taking on a capital campaign to finance a permanent home for their work, something they have needed since Day One, but also something they have managed to compensate for while building their reputation as arts educators. The goal is thoughtfully planned and ambitious, yet with a relatively small budget of less than $1 million that has been declining since FY2007, Destiny could be facing some challenges to meet campaign goals while maintaining services. The Board may be playing new roles for the organization in light of fundraising goals, and their historic trend of contributions of less than 1% may be a catalyst for changes in board skills and composition.
N
They could develop more middle management to support upper management.
Luna Kids Dance (4 recommendations) Luna produces great programs for kids and their parents, as well as, strong training for teachers in dance programming for kids. It has been especially admirable in helping families in poverty and victims of abuse.

Evidence of Impact

O
Luna produces great programs for kids and their parents, as well as, strong training for teachers in dance programming for kids. It has been especially admirable in helping families in poverty and victims of abuse.
N
This organization's educational programs with family and youth are bridging the gap in arts programs at schools. Their training programs are generating a new generation of dance teachers that will impact youth.
R
This group serves dance educators in the state, represents the field at the national level, places artists in schools, trains future educators according to the standards of the field, and works with other arts groups to further the goals of dance.
F
Luna Kida Dance is the only comprehensive children's dance organization in Northern California. LKD fulfills its mission to bring all children to dance through two program areas: School & Community Alliances and the California Institute for Dance learning. Luna Kids Dance is instrumental in bringing ongoing weekly standards-based dance classes to 24,499 children each year.

Organizational Strengths

O
It has totally dedicated leaders who are very smart and have long years of experience.
N
They have a strong staff with a strong history of working in the schools and building strong partnerships. Their training programs are seen as the industry standard for dance teacher training.
R
The group has a dynamic leadership and a solid reputation in the field for quality work. Luna is inventive in its programs for teacher training.
F
The leadership I have been involved with show great passion for their work and also show a great tenacity to getting problems resolved so that the work of dance with children can continue.

Areas for Improvement

O
Unfortunately, they probably have to work harder at raising money.
R
I would like to see its presence even stronger in the Bay Area and beyond.
F
They need help in finding a permanent home and in fiscal management so that they can continue to be professionally staffed.
SFJAZZ (4 recommendations) SFJazz, under the leadership of Randall Kline, has evolved from a small jazz presenter to a major national presenter. Not only does it provide a center for jazz in the Bay Area, but through its SF Jazz Collective, it also reaches audiences in regions of the country that do not have access to such excellent performers. Its cultivation of jazz composers and young musicians through its education programs and accessibility to an important American art form through its year-round performances is important for the jazz field at large.

SFJazz, under the leadership of Randall Kline, has evolved from a small jazz presenter to a major national presenter.
F
This organization has helped make the Bay Area one of the true cities for jazz appreciation, launching Fall and Spring seasons and positioning jazz as a critical art form.
F
SFJazz is perhaps the most successful nonprofit arts organization formed in the Bay Area in the last 30 years. They are successful both artistically and administratively.
F
Begun literally from nothing almost 30 years ago, SFJazz has become one of the most recognized and lauded jazz organizations in the world, now presenting dozens of performances with hundreds of musicians to thousands of audience members each year. San Francisco is recognized everywhere as a jazz center, mostly due to the efforts of SFJazz. The group presents both established and brand new artists in premiere venues bolstered by superb marketing and publicity.

Organizational Strengths

F
The organization is led by a strong Executive Director and devoted staff. It maintains a strong balance between earned and contributed revenues and is entrepreneurial in its approach.
F
I continue to be impressed with the organization's marketing and promotion staff.
F
Executive Director Randall Kline has diligently built his organization from the ground up. His festival is always a highly-anticipated cultural event in the area, and never misses a beat (no pun intended).
F
Their leadership is strong and stable, as are their marketing and finances.

Areas for Improvement

F
This organization is embarking on a major capital campaign in very challenging economic times. The organization will have to ramp up its infrastructure to manage this building and will need help to accomplish a smooth transition.
F
I think staff turnover has been a concern and the organization would probably do well to have a #2 to support the efforts of the founder.
F
SFJazz is ready for the next step. It should build its educational and training activities, and identify a permanent home.
F
SFJazz has more than usual staff turnover in department manager positions, such as development and marketing.
Teatro Vision (4 recommendations) This organization is a leading mid-size Chicano and Latino theatrical producer of performances in the Bay Area. Based at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, it has had performances in 200-500 seat theaters with hands on technical theater internships led by professionals in conjunction with company productions for more than 20 years.
Teatro Vision

Evidence of Impact

F
This organization is a leading mid-size Chicano and Latino theatrical producer of performances in the Bay Area. Based at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, it has had performances in 200-500 seat theaters with hands on technical theater internships led by professionals in conjunction with company productions for more than 20 years.
F
This organization has brought high quality Latino theater to the Silicon Valley community, commissioning new work as well as producing some works bilingually, with English supertitles, so as to be accessible to more people. They have reached many people with culturally relevant programming who might not otherwise have attended the theater. Their pricing is very accessible and they have ancillary community programs, such as the theater training institute, etc, that help support their mission.
N
In addition to theater productions, Teatro Visión, provides in-depth programming to the local community. Their deep ties to community partners make Teatro Visión a well-respected leader within the community. Their leadership and commitment to community well-being have helped to spur many changes and improvements within the community.
N
Teatro Vision's programming is aimed specifically at Latino audiences and performs works by Latino playwrights, addressing themes that appeal to a largely Latino audience.

Organizational Strengths

F
This arts organization is a graduate of the San Jose Arts Incubation Program in the early 90's with $10,000 annual financial statements and all volunteers, to a $750,000 organization with full-time professional staff with continued technical assistance development grants.
F
Their leadership and staff are very committed to the mission and their marketing and outreach is effective.
N
The leadership and staff are definitely strengths of Teatro Visión. Beyond the leadership of the organization, the staff members are also directly involved in the community and help to establish a deep connection to audience members and participants in outreach programming. Production quality of this theater organization is of the highest caliber. Leadership and training opportunities that the organization provides to artists and community members is outstanding. They have deep connections to national networks and recognition, on a national level, that strengthen the organization.
N
The artistic director is a visionary and brings many interesting and worthwhile projects to the company. Their operations have been strong but they are currently being hindered by space issues.

Areas for Improvement

F
The organization had continued growth in meeting best practices such as strategic planning tools, CPA accounting reporting practices, and tracking their attendees. A major challenge in the near term is to develop new financial resources to replace the reduction of government grants with earned revenues and tap the new emerging leadership of young professionals.
F
The organization is financially vulnerable and carrying some accumulated debt due in part to the economic downturn and associated reduction in contributed income. However, the Board and staff have made some difficult decisions and are actively working to get the organization in stronger financial footing.
N
They need to improve balancing the number of productions with the size of their audience: some show runs do not fill to capacity, while others are sold out consistently. While this is not an easy question for any theater group, it still is something that is worth looking at to improve.
N
Teatro Vision operates out of the Mexican Heritage Center in San Jose, which has recently been taken over by the City of San Jose. As a result of budget cuts within the city, Teatro has suffered on many levels. It could be that they need a new venue to continue operations.
World Arts West (4 recommendations) This is a strong organization that has built up a national reputation and expectation of their annual services.
World Arts West

http://www.worldartswest.org

Evidence of Impact

F
This is a strong organization that has built up a national reputation and expectation of their annual services.
F
They produce the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, a nationally recognized multicultural showcase of dance and music in a fully professional theater with union crews. This is something very difficult for the groups to do on their own. They have been around for 31 years.
R
This organization impacts the community's perception of Ethnic Performing Arts.
F
World Arts West produces the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, the largest multicultural display of dance forms from around the world in the United States. Many culturally specific dance groups, while having a superior product, have difficulty reaching audiences outside their own communities. WAW serves hundreds of these companies from dozens of cultures with professional production expertise, displaying their work to thousands of people each year. In addition, an educational program introduces young people to the richness of dance and culture from around the world.

Organizational Strengths

F
The leadership and staff of this organization has reached out beyond the Bay Area to train others in replicating the services they provide.
F
The festival staff is extremely strong with some members of the production crew having worked on the event for 30 years. Operationally, this is like producing the United Nations on stage.
R
They have a very involved board, capable director, committed staff, and financial integrity.
F
WAW benefits from stable leadership, an involved board, and strong ties of trust and collaboration with the many cultural communities it serves. Their marketing is consistently excellent, and their financial planning is conservative.

Areas for Improvement

F
This organization could improve its ability to bring in more resources to ease the strain on staff and board.
F
They could increase the breadth and scope of their marketing to a wider Bay Area reach.
R
They could reconsider the purpose of the audition process. They also need better communication with performing groups.
F
WAW has undertaken a strategic planning process to chart its future course. Some areas it will examine for improvement are strengthening the board's fundraising capacity, and enhancing resources for the dance companies.
Alonzo King's LINES Ballet (3 recommendations) This is a modern ballet company that has a unique approach to presenting ballet with many partnerships that expand the artistic experience for the audience.
Alonzo King's LINES Ballet

http://www.linesballet.org/

Evidence of Impact

R
This is a modern ballet company that has a unique approach to presenting ballet with many partnerships that expand the artistic experience for the audience.
O
LINES ballet opened a dance center in San Francisco that serves hundreds of students. They also partner with a college campus in Marin and are deeply committed to nurturing young dancers.
F
LINES Ballet has redefined modern dance in the Bay Area, and has made dance fans out of a new generation.

Organizational Strengths

R
I feel Alonzo King is a very gifted choreographer and visionary. He has also done a lot to train the next generation of dancers through his school.
O
They have very strong marketing, one of the signatures of their company. They also seem to have strong executive leadership and Board.
F
Artistic Director Alonzo King has made a career out of fashioning brazen collaborative dance pieces. Supporting his vision is a team of highly skilled managers. The company is another example of smart growth.

Areas for Improvement

R
They could benefit from access to capital to help their operations run more smoothly.
O
Not sure, I image that raising funds to sustain their facility would be an improvement. Also, the facility is a rental and I imagine a more stable environment might include the opportunity to own their own rehearsal, office, and school.
F
The group needs to turn its enthusiastic audience base into donors.
Arts Council Silicon Valley (3 recommendations) They offer the best workshops and the most helpful, effective training in all aspects of running an effective arts organization.
Arts Council Silicon Valley
Silver-small

Evidence of Impact

N
They offer the best workshops and the most helpful, effective training in all aspects of running an effective arts organization.
N
ACSV is the number one advocacy arts organization for the South Bay. The focus of ACSV is regional and not just San Jose centric. They not only provide grants for small to medium size organizations, but also support, advice, and their expertise.
N
ACSV is great resource for the arts in the Bay Area.

Organizational Strengths

N
They are dedicated to helping all arts organizations and individuals associated in any capacity to an arts organization feel encouraged, supported, and heard. They are all about helping arts organizations. They put Community Foundation Silicon Valley to shame.
N
I admire Bruce Davis and his staff. They are knowledgeable about the arts sector, have staff who honestly care about the state of the arts world, and act as strong advocates for the arts organizations.
N
They make art events affordable, help us fill the houses, and help find job openings, etc. They are the only organization that gives out awards.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need more money to give away. They are one of the only organizations giving general funding and promoting their funding programs. Thus, they get a lot of applications and end up giving a little amount to everyone.
N
Like all arts organizations, ACSV has been hit hard by the recession. They have elected to have staff furloughs rather than cut any grant programs. An obvious area for improvement would be to reinstate the full staff schedule.
N
The person who writes a blog to discuss events--Princess? -- is terrible. This person needs to stop the weird rants and just plainly give a review of an event.
De Young Museum (3 recommendations) They have innovative exhibitions with innovative public programming, a strong sense of "nature and culture" interaction in their interior relationship to exterior spaces.
De Young Museum

Evidence of Impact

R
They have innovative exhibitions with innovative public programming, a strong sense of "nature and culture" interaction in their interior relationship to exterior spaces.
F
Since their rebuilding effort, the De Young Museum has strengthened their position as the leading museum in the area. Their Friday Night program was a trendsetter in night-based programming for museums.
N
We have collaborated with the De Young Museum on museum visits and performance projects for low income youth. The result has been a permanent addition to our organization's annual offerings that deeply impacts our programs. We have worked mostly with their education department.

Organizational Strengths

F
Tremendous board and terrific curators keep the De Young as one of the most influential museums in the area.
N
The leadership within the education department is amazing. The staff initiates "out-of-the box" projects serving the city of San Francisco. Their outreach to new arts communities and potential arts patrons of the future has been incredible. The facility after renovation is beautiful and their collaboration with other arts organizations like VTS and us at StageWrite have been deep and thoughtful.

Areas for Improvement

R
The cross-disciplinary reach of this organization beyond object-display is less strong; a stronger connection to time-based art would further develop its profile.
F
A little less focus on "ritz and glitz" might make sense.
N
They could do better marketing of these special projects within the education department. As with many education departments at arts organizations, they are often underplayed.
Eastside Arts Alliance (3 recommendations) This is a case of impact measured by community engagement. This organization and facility has real ties to its immediate community rather than simply being located there. The organization has been very smart in its engagement of youth, particularly adolescents, in art and culture activities by promoting and using the art forms dear to their hearts: spoken word, hip hop, graffiti art, and break dance. They notably work with "street arts" but with a fine attention to detail, and they craft, as would be expected in so-called "high art". Rather than using traditional/classical arts and attempting to educate the kids about them, the organization takes activities appreciated and engaged in by its target community and shows them that this is art too. As these art forms tend to be looked down upon by culture snobs, it is a powerful message. The organization serves other ages as well, but it is the youth programming that's most notable. Many of the youth served are from immigrant communities. It is a truly multicultural neighborhood and organization.

Eastside Arts Alliance provides a comprehensive program of creative opportunities for an underserved, multi-ethnic, multi-generational community. It helps to sustain and revitalize the community by offering a place for ongoing cultural activities initiated by local artists and residents.

ESAA literally put a stake in the ground in the Fruitvale/San Antonio area of Oakland with its urban rehabilitation of a building that combines a cultural center with affordable housing, performance, arts-based youth development, and convenings that catalyze original work, dialogue critique, and community engagement. They have populated the site with a host of collaborating projects in music, dance, literary, and media arts that resonate with students, artists, and residents, and play a vital role in community organizing. Serving an after school cohort of 150+ youth in visual and performing arts, and presenting signature annual events such as the Malcolm X JazzArts Festival, ESAA is creating a common ground for Oakland's Asian, Latino, Native and African American communities.

Organizational Strengths

F
The group's leadership is visionary and tenacious. The community center project is quite ambitious and it has taken some chutzpah and some savvy networking to pull it off.
F
It has committed, passionate leadership with a vision of using the arts/cultural advocacy to improve the quality of life for the community. It has a comprehensive and innovative model of a community cultural center that includes artistic venues, housing and retail. As well, its ability to articulate this vision to the community and to supporters, including funders is a great strength.
N
ESAA is an anchor partner of the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Making Connections Initiative, connecting its work to a comprehensive effort to make change on social, economic, educational, and environmental fronts in the Lower San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland. ESAA has used this coalition to demonstrate the integral role of the arts in promoting "resident leadership and organizing strategies that are essential to neighborhood transformation." It is rare that development initiatives recognize the central role of culture in their work. ESAA has done an exemplary job of proving the investment in their work was of critical value not just to the project's San Antonio Neighborhood Network, but to the residents who were given the space and authority to define what the cultural center would be and do. ESAA shares its models and learning, as Project Director Elena Serrano is a national leading voice for sustainable neighborhood art centers.

Areas for Improvement

F
They need some more experienced staffers and volunteers on the business and administrative side of things.
F
It could improve by developing an administrative and financial structure to support this broad vision.
N
ESAA has brought its cultural center to scale with a very small board and operating budget. For instance, there are three board members and a way-below-market salary for its program director. This was bolstered by a joint agreement with Affordable Housing Associates that created a third entity, a for profit LLC. While growth of the nonprofit board and recalibration of staffing and compensation might make sense for a traditional organization navigating facility ownership and sustainability, ESAA's hybrid approach, coupled with its reliance on community-driven priorities, may turn out to be more successful even during difficult economic times. The model is a provocative one for Bay Area arts organizations that could, through external evaluation and study, be promoted as a leading solution for sustainable cultural enterprise.

This organization has successfully built an annual LGBT film festival into a community activity. The ten days of events are almost always sold out and the variety of films provides provocative and engaging opportunities for cross-community connections. It has also branched out to create year round activities and crucial support for filmmakers.
N
Frameline remains the pivotal platform for LGBT film and video, and as such makes an enormous impact on viewers, many of whom otherwise do not have easy access to this type of content within community-based presentation.
N
Frameline is hugely successful in the LGBT and queer friendly arena, which is big and very important in San Francisco.

Organizational Strengths

F
The organization has a very strong board and professional staff who have maintained the strong presence in San Francisco and the high expectations for their events. Their catalogue remains an amazing compendium of contemporary queer film.
N
Leadership has weathered a major change with grace and with a renewed emphasis on streamlining staff, operations, and public programs in order to focus on core strengths of exhibition, distribution, and filmmaker support.
N
They have strong programming and marketing.

Areas for Improvement

F
The new executive director has been a great addition. Sometimes the curatorial perspective, however, seems somewhat stolid. Expanding the structure to include a broader perspective might be interesting.
N
Curatorial choices could be more discerning. The SFILGBT Festival still shows subpar work merely because of its LGBT content. All featured artists should be held up to the same high standards as any world-class exhibition program.
N
They could do even more outreach to the wider community to increase awareness.

They identify emerging artists and provided space for these artists to further their craft.
O
Headlands Center for the Arts is primarily an artist residency for emerging and established artists. The artists are local, national, and international and they work across a wide range of disciplines, which provides a wonderful environment for the artists to experiment, collaborate, and evolve. Headlands Center for the Arts has public programming including artist talks, a project space studio, open houses, dinners at Headlands, and artist commissions. Those events, especially the open houses, draw a big crowd.
N
Headlands is a mainstay for artists trying to produce work that stretches the definition of art in any particular genre. They are at the forefront of cultivating and curating artists who are outside of any particular discipline or who work across disciplines. They have done a good job of cultivating a knowledgeable and engaged audience for work that is cutting edge and experimental. There are so few places for true experimentation to happen. The fact that Headlands offers artists time to work on ideas that may not immediately result in something that is "sellable" or "audience ready" is really profoundly important to the identity of the Bay Area arts scene. We used to be known as a place of alternative thinking and experimentation, but few arts organizations really have the courage that it takes to foster artists who are taking chances and risking failure. I am a big supporter of Headlands for being willing to do this.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have originality and community building.
O
The Headlands Center has a two-tiered residency program, including the "official" residencies as well as the Affiliate Artist program studios. The Affiliate Artist program allows artists to rent studios at below market rate. Both residency programs have an annual application and are competitive.
N
The site, the Marin Headlands, is an important factor in the success of this organization. Many of the artists they select do work that is related to the land or to ecological issues. It is a nice blend of social relevance and art making.

Areas for Improvement

F
They could bring the work created at headlands into the community.
O
There are artists who have had multiple residencies at the Headlands. It seems that Headlands could have a policy to only work with an artist once so as to provide more opportunities for other artists.
N
I think the marketing could use some help. I would like to see them feature more that there are "experimenters at work". This is the unique aspect of what they do and I don't always feel it in their marketing.

F
I have been familiar with the work of Eugene Rodriguez, Director of Los Cenzontles, since he first received funding from the California Arts Council's Artists in Residence Program to teach young participants traditional Mexican music and dance. It was out of this collaboration that Los Cenzontles performing youth group would emerge and subsequently become LCMAC. Under Mr. Rodriguez's leadership, LCMAC developed and continues to provide music and dance classes, cultural exchanges, training with masters, and events and special presentations to their community. I have seen over the course of many years how Mr. Rodriguez educated and nurtured the original members of Los Cenzontles performing group. Not only do these talented young artists perform, choreograph, and record, but they are now also involved as mentors, administrators, teachers, and producers at LCMAC. They are role models in their community.
F
Los Cenzontles is serving a community in high need in Richmond/San Pablo. There is a large Mexican immigrant community that they mostly serve and as well as a portion of the African American youth. They also bring together communities of different income levels because of the high quality of their Mexican folkloric music that they perform and teach.

Organizational Strengths

R
Los Centzontles has some very unique and high profile contacts in the music industry. They are musicians of critical acclaim, while not necessarily huge market names. These contacts are well leveraged by Los Centontles to bring visibility and quality to the programs and music they produce.
F
Los Cenzontles has developed income sources through music recordings and touring by Los Cenzontles performing group and promotes Mexican traditions by documenting their work with various masters in Mexico and the U.S.
F
The executive director and founder is very committed to the work and has developed great relationships in philanthropy, the community, government, and the music world.

Areas for Improvement

R
I hope, as with many organizations, that a leadership succession plan is in place to carry on this good work once the current Artistic director is no longer in a position to lead the organization. I hope these contacts that I mentioned above are institutional and grow beyond the individual ties that the founder/director brings to the organization.
F
This organization does a lot for a nonprofit considered small by many standards; however, they recognize the need to increase their administrative staff and are taking steps in this direction.
F
It's a mid-sized arts organization that has sustained its growth and could very easily grow its programmings, as it's doing. The executive director manages many projects and could use more support in his leadership work from the board and by engaging or hiring other staff in leadership roles.

The advocacy and support this organization offers for those involved with chamber music in the Bay Area represents the full spectrum from students to audiences to amateur musicians to professionals.
N
SF Friends of Chamber Music has brought attention to an art form that is often under the radar of the press and audiences unfamiliar with this style of music. Its "Chamber Music Day" has brought together the chamber music community in the Bay Area and has garnered press and public attention. This is no small accomplishment.
F
SF Friends of Chamber music provides support and fiscal sponsorship services to well over 20 chamber ensembles in the Bay Area. Two string quartets in particular, Cypress and Del Sol String Quartets, have gone on to become independent and are in the process of creating successful performing careers.

Organizational Strengths

N
Their leadership guides the organization in strategic ways to make a difference in the field. Their programs are well conceived and executed.
N
They serve their constituents well with only two paid staff members and a committed Board of Directors. As a Service Organization, they do not seek recognition for themselves, but for the field. This makes it even more difficult for them to be self-sustaining.
F
This organization has a very strong, knowledgeable, and involved board of directors. SFFCM has developed a re-granting program to provide support for emerging chamber music ensembles and composers.

Areas for Improvement

N
SFFCM's re-granting program is really helpful to small chamber ensembles and could use more funding. Its Day of Chamber Music is really innovative and could use a lot more publicity to make it even more successful.
N
I don't believe they can improve anything they are currently doing; they do it efficiently and effectively. It would be wonderful if they could add additional staff so that they could do even more.
F
SFFCM will continue to need to raise money to support its re-granting program. Although administrative staff appear to be very competent and effective, the organization runs on a shoe string.

O
This organization has strong and broad fundraising, as well as the artistic vision of Ruth Felt.
N
They have valued leadership in Ruth Felt and are well connected in the San Francisco arts community.

N
San Jose's Japanese community is one of the few in California to survive internment and related seizure of homes, land, and businesses. San Jose Taiko has done so much for so many years to promote appreciation of Japanese culture and awareness of Japanese American community with great success.
N
San Jose Taiko presents high quality programs, both performing and educational. They serve as a cultural connector for Japanese Americans and others.

Organizational Strengths

F
San Jose Taiko has leaders deeply rooted in its San Jose community, a long history of cultural and artistic excellence, and a sound balance sheet.
N
Their leadership are strong artists who also know how sustain an organization. These leaders have also played an active role in the economic and social development of San Jose's Japan town, as well as taken initiative to forge alliances with other arts organizations in order to advocate for resources and recognition.
N
San Jose Taiko is extremely well run, from their Executive Director and Artistic Director to their staff, board, overall operations, and financial stability, etc.

Areas for Improvement

F
San Jose Taiko’s greatest challenge during the past few years has been in securing a long-term rehearsal and performance space. Acquisition of Okida Hall, a historic structure in Japan town, will enable them to create a cultural community center while meeting it's own space needs.
N
I would love to see more artistic collaboration and joint strategic planning in regards to the future of culturally specific arts organizations and dedicated facilities.
N
Areas for the future include leadership transition and overall marketing of their work in the local community, talking about what value they add to a larger audience.

This organization has programming that is really captivating. Their combination of arts and education, with presentations that incorporate the industrial arts, is fascinating.
O
The Crucible is more than an arts organization, they are a community. In their own words: "The Crucible is a non-profit educational facility that fosters a collaboration of Arts, Industry and Community. Through training in the fine and industrial arts, The Crucible promotes creative expression, reuse of materials and innovative design while serving as an accessible arts venue for the general public." The Crucible provides facilities and training for artists interested in learning how to work with metal.<br><br> <b>Nonprofit's response:</b>The Crucible and Burning Man are not officially connected, but they are very friendly and play together quite often.
F
The organization's focus on fire and industrial arts is unique. Their work, including public events like the annual Fire Arts Festival, makes art forms accessible that otherwise can seem to outsiders to be intimidating or esoteric, which is in a completely different way than, say, ballet or classical music can seem intimidating. At the same time, giant sculptures shooting fire into the sky can be exhilarating and accessible in a way that Picasso is not, as Picasso is often exhilarating, but not always so accessible. However, impact must be measured in more than just excellence in the production of a particular art form. The Crucible's focus on instruction and the thousands of people they serve through their classes, exhibitions, and performances, has had the effect of unlocking the creativity of many, many people who otherwise would not consider themselves "artists" or might not have pursued learning an art, as they have the model of "painting, piano and plies" ensconced in their minds as being what "art" is. It is a participatory model that encourages making and doing rather than being a passive consumer of cultural artifacts and experience. It also promotes, presents, and teaches types of art that are less commonly known and that challenge the notion of the artist as effete. This, I don't think, is the mission of the organization, but rather an interesting side effect.

Organizational Strengths

N
They get a lot of good press and hire some of the most creative local talent to teach and perform.
O
Many of the artist who work at The Crucible also participate in Burning Man, which provides them a place to display their works. I do not know if there is an official connection between these two organizations.
F
The organization has been very smart in its fundraising and marketing strategies. It is also a big plus that much of the organization's budget is earned revenue. I am under the impression that some key leadership positions are filled by people with for-profit business experience, and the entrepreneurial energy they bring to running the organization could be a positive lesson for other organizations to learn.

Areas for Improvement

N
They could do a better job at getting the main stream arts audiences in the Bay Area to be more familiar with their mission. They could continue to find even more inventive ways to collaborate with other arts organizations.<br><br> <b>Nonprofit's response:</b> From building collaborative community art projects, to bring fire to local museums, adding new specialize events and widening their reach to the news media; The Crucible has open their reach to other arts organizations and main stream audiences.

The leadership could perhaps learn to be more flexible.<br><br> <b>Nonprofit's response:</b> The Crucible is under new leadership; this past year (2011) they welcomed on a new Executive Director, Steven Young.

Personal positive transformations are possible because of this group's work. Theater pieces are written by and for these populations and are shared with the broader community, revealing our common humanity and frailty.
F
This organization developed a new model of using the arts to work with incarcerated women. They used theatre to educate program participants and audiences about issues related to this population. They lower recidivism rates for program participants and "humanize" this population and their families.
N
The Medea Project works primarily with incarcerated women, using art and theatre to try to reduce the number of women returning to prison. It has gained international attention for its efforts and has touched the lives of many, many women.

Organizational Strengths

O
The Medea Project has a global presence. They have performed internationally and carry with them their philosophy of art as social activism. Cultural Odyssey has been on the scene for 30 years. They have consistently mounted a season of performance. They do not rely solely on donations, grants or box office sales. They also sell CDs, DVDs, and other promotional products for sale on their website.
F
They have remarkable leadership with Rhodessa Jones, who is gifted as an actress, director, and has a unique ability to work with women to produce honest and powerful performances.
N
The Medea Project "is" Rhodessa Jones. She is definitely a strength along with Cultural Odyssey's Idris Ackamoor. For a small organization, their publicity efforts are quite good.

Areas for Improvement

O
They need to expand their focus to younger, at-risk populations, and reach young women before they become incarcerated or victims of unprotected sex. They should prepare for the next generation of writers and directors to lead Cultural Odyssey over the next 30 years.
F
They could expand this model to other areas. For example, Medea is now also working with women with H.I.V. They also need to document and distribute the "how to" and impacts of this model, if possible, in order to train others in this work.
N
It seems that they could use more infrastructure, but that is an assumption. I think they do what they do quite well given the resources.

N
Their involvement and inclusion of the entire arts spectrum. They have a clearing house of pertinent elements for all regional arts groups.

Areas for Improvement

They have no actual product or any presentive format. They could benefit from getting into hands on presentations. They could create a grantsmanship workshop and grant resource program establishing leads to arts groups about potential funding, rather than competing with actual producing entities.

There is strong leadership in Mythili Kumar, plus impressive next generation leadership development.

Areas for Improvement

F
It is a unique project, focusing attention primarily on the solo work of African-American performers. The annual festival, as well as other events leading up to that, have good audiences that cross all communities. The mix of people interested in performance that is not simply a full theatrical production is a good cross-section of our city.

Organizational Strengths

O
AfroSolo's programming reflects the concept of a thriving art and culture community as fundamental to a healthy broader community. Through the encouragement of art practice as a personal expression of the psychological and spiritual challenges faced by the artists, AfroSolo conjoins art-making with the reality of hypertension, diabetes, HIV-AIDs, prostate cancer, and heart disease - physical challenges faced by people of color and, in particular, African-Americans. It has a holistic approach to a healthy, thriving, and creative community.
F
The director has an adventurous spirit, is consistent in his work, continually seeks out new talent, presents them professionally, and does good out reach.

Areas for Improvement

O
AfroSolo is not an independent organization. It is not an incorporated 501c(3). As such, it is solely in the hands of the founder and executive director. The danger is that at his death or should he become unable to lead, there is no plan for a successor to step in and ensure the sustainability of the program. I highly recommend that AfroSolo take the steps to institutionalize and do what it can to stabilize its mission for the years ahead.
F
The organization remains primarily a one man shop. AfroSolo would benefit from some organizational development that would broaden the leadership and support base. That might not be what he's looking for yet but it is something that is certainly on the horizon.

Organizational Strengths

City Lights is blessed with exceptional leadership in their Artistic Managing Director, Lisa Mallette. Lisa is incredibly engaged in her community and is a model for getting the community engaged in the company's work. City Lights recently became a national model for a new program in conjunction with the Dead Man Walking Project, where students and theatre professionals work together on complex social issues.
N

Areas for Improvement

Crowded Fire has been doing world premieres by innovative playwrights for years. They serve an important local role, as they share these playwrights with the Bay Area, and an important national role, as they bring these plays into the world.
O
This organization has introduced quality world premier productions from some of the most noted local, national, and international playwrights. The quality of the productions and performances is excellent and deserves the attention of the national scene.

Organizational Strengths

N
Their leader Marissa Wolf is just fantastic. She is smart, has lots of integrity, and has excellent taste. She took over during a rocky time for the organization and is doing an excellent job getting it back on track. They also have an excellent track record of doing innovative new plays.
O
The ensemble has a long history of working very well together. Because of this, their performances are a step above disparate casting which is always trying to build relationship as a precursor to getting into the actual work. Crowded Fire always takes risks in the work they choose and they always go above and beyond in their production values.

Areas for Improvement

N
CFT is tiny. They are really vulnerable to economic downturns and box office fluctuations. They need a few large donors to help float their boat which is why I thought of them first.
O
The organization went through some leadership changes a couple years ago and is now just re-establishing their footing. Luckily, there is a loyal ensemble and following. Their marketing could be better but the consistent good work has kept them in the forefront of the Bay Area theater scene.

This organization has an extremely rare and valuable residency program that serves artists in all disciplines by giving them space and time to create.
N
By giving artists of all disciplines from around the world the simple gift of time (with no strings attached, including teaching or presentation of work completed), the Djerassi Resident Artists Program has had a huge impact in the creation of new work and has been invaluable to the artists who have participated.

Organizational Strengths

N
This organization has a very clear vision and strong leadership in Dennis O'Leary. The narrow focus of their program has allowed them to develop excellence in their operations, and that is reflected in the high level of artists they host.
N
From what I've seen, which is a bit minimal, the staff is professional and friendly and knows exactly what the artists need. I believe they also has a strong commitment to serving locally grown foods.

Areas for Improvement

N
Ties to local artists could be strengthened. Specific resources for artists of disciplines like media art, sculpture, and music, could be improved with purchases and capital improvements.
N
Perhaps the buildings could use some more maintenance with funding.

The East Bay Center for the Performing Arts serves thousands of youth in the city of Richmond, one of the most dangerous cities in America. They offer private lessons, group classes and performance ensemble training opportunities in West African Music and Dance, Classical Music, Jazz, Hip-Hop/Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Regional Mexican Music and Dance, Trinidadian Steel Pans, Southeast Asian Music and Dance, Theater, Voice, and Media/Digital Film Arts.

Organizational Strengths

N
The executive director is charismatic and savvy.
F
Jordan Simmons is a dedicated leader whose passion and commitment to the Center is admirable and inspiring. Another strength is the commitment of the staff to the children at the Center.

Areas for Improvement

N
Seems primarily motivated for the success of its own non-profit to the extend that other non-profits feels mistreated or unfairly treated by it. More two-way collaboration.
F
They are in the midst of a $15M renovation of their center, the Winters Building. It will be important to remain focused on their activities through this growth period, and to manage the potential decline in financial support after such a vigorous capital campaign.

F
They are a relatively young organization but in their 10 years of existence, they have been able to build a growing and supportive community for transgender artists and their communities. They have multiple creative forums, specifically commissioning, performing arts festival, film festival, touring, etc., for the growth, nurturing, and presentation of transgender voices. This makes accessible and "humanizes" transgender stories.

Organizational Strengths

F
They a small but visionary and powerful leadership.
F
They articulate brave, activist leadership and have community ownership.

Areas for Improvement

F
They need more capacity to keep going, a labor of love right now.
F
They need a larger and more diverse board of directors, diversification of revenue streams, and an increased mobilization of potential volunteer community base.
Kala Art (2 recommendations) Kala's Artist-in-Residence Program involves 100 artists throughout the year who work in Kala's printmaking studio and electronic media center. Applications are accepted year-round. Their Fellowship Program is an annual international competition awarding nine artists a cash stipend of $3,000 and six months of residency time at Kala, including unlimited use of Kala's studio equipment, exhibition opportunities, and professional development support. Exhibitions in the Kala gallery, a 2,200 square foot space, total seven exhibitions per year, three of which specifically feature works created by Kala resident artists. Kala also offers a number of public programs in conjunction with exhibitions, and participates in organizing off-site exhibition projects throughout the year. Kala offers over 100 open-registration classes and workshops for the general pubic, ranging from woodcut to web site design, encaustic to wide-format digital printing. Approximately 600 individuals each year participate in Kala classes, including the general public as well as professional artists looking for additional training. The Artists-in-Schools Program began in 1991 and is currently active in twelve East Bay elementary, middle and high schools. O
Kala has very good programs for school kids of all ages. It also provides great facilities for art making for any qualified artist at a very affordable prices. The atmosphere is very international and multicultural. The fellowship program enables young artists to concentrate on projects for 3 months and move along in their art careers.

Organizational Strengths

F
Recently, Kala expanded their lease to add on the 2,200 square foot art gallery. This required a great deal of business, contracting, and fundraising skills and was successful. Their founding director started this nonprofit in Paris, France many years ago and brought this with her to settle in the East Bay in Berkeley, California. All the above show successful skills and true dedication.
O
It has very strong administrative staff at all levels. They help create a very co-operative attitude.

Areas for Improvement

F
I would suggest that they do not expand to any more space or take on any more new projects due to the current fiscal economy. Their vision and dedication drives them to develop new programs and this may cause them to overextend.
O
They probably have to work harder at fundraising.

The organization has brought visibility to the Bay Area arts scene from around the world -- they are ambassadors, instigators, and true iconoclasts.

Organizational Strengths

N
This organization truly presents small ensemble music on a large scale. Its Family Concert series presents top caliber musicians, as well as fun concerts that are less formal than traditional chamber music concerts.

Organizational Strengths

N
The website and marketing materials are excellent. The programming is outstanding and the executive director, Patricia Kristof Moy, is an active and engaged arts advocate.
N
Their marketing is effective, as the concerts are well-attended and have a good "buzz" around them. Music at Kohl Mansion also has impressive programs in the San Francisco schools.

Areas for Improvement

N
I would like to see Music at Kohl mansion engage a younger audience for its adult programs. From the performances I've attended, the audience was almost always well over 60 years old. Hopefully their efforts to involve families and children will help build audiences for many years to come.
N
Music at Kohl Mansion has a low paid staff for all of the work that it does. I would like to see the Board devote more resources to additional staff. An organization of this size could reach even more people in the area if it had additional human resources at its disposal. They accomplish a great deal with volunteers, but for sustained growth, full-time attention is necessary.

F
The Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) was founded in 1984 by a coalition of volunteers who recognized the need for a strong artistic and cultural force in the Chinatown area. Since opening its own facility in 1996 in the heart of Oakland's Chinatown district, the OACC has presented countless high quality cultural programs including performances, workshops, festivals, school tours, classes, and exhibitions. OACC builds vibrant communities through Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) arts and culture programs that foster intergenerational and cross-cultural dialogue, cultural identity, collaborations, and social justice.

Organizational Strengths

F
They have strong leadership with new emerging young leaders.
F
OACC is a thriving first class community arts organization in Oakland and the Bay Area that promotes cross-cultural understanding for present and future generations. Local artists and their cultural art forms are promoted through a variety of programming and community collaborations. OACC envisions vibrant, healthy, and just communities where diverse Asian and Pacific Islander American identities and heritages are affirmed and celebrated through cross-cultural interchange, intergenerational dialogue, and educational programming.

The Other Minds Festival has being one of the organizations that has promoted contemporary music to a larger public in the Bay Area. Their yearly festival is not always so approachable, but it creates a very good base for a wealthy composer's community.
O
Other Minds has been producing concerts from the most current musicians for 12 years. Their forte is bringing the latest music to San Francisco. They also provide a web radio presence that serves a larger spectrum of listeners and produces a recordings of artists. Finally, they support artists in their creativity through the Djerassi residency component of their festival..

Organizational Strengths

N
The strengths of the organization has always been their Executive Director. His leadership was confirmed to me several years ago when he hired a young and knowledgeable Assistant Director. The organization thrives with their leadership.
O
They provide many services through their web presence and maintain a strong business operation.

Areas for Improvement

N
Other Minds could be more visible with a location that would allow the public and composers to meet and for the public to listen and buy a CD. When they do not have performances, their presence is mostly web based.
O
They could benefit from a higher profile in the Bay Area to increase attendance at their public events.

Among the city's many small companies, San Francisco Playhouse has stood out in recent years for the quality of their work. They have come out of nowhere in the last decade to establish themselves as one of the best new theaters in the city.
N
SF Playhouse has managed, in an economically depressed time, to grow into a nonprofit driven by an almost commercial model: they produce crowd-pleasing work that is also edgy and exciting, good production values, and a relatively reasonable ticket price.

Organizational Strengths

N
Their location is their strongest asset, followed closely by their choice in shows.
N
SF Playhouse's marketing and solicitation strategies are often quite good. Their increased role as a landlord and mentor for smaller arts organizations is encouraging, too.

Areas for Improvement

N
Like many small non-profits, they have a lot of work to do on the management side. They often seem disorganized, even to artists. If managed properly, this is a company that could grow substantially in the next decade; if they don't improve, they'll never get past where they are now.
N
Production values are sometimes fantastic, sometimes awful, as is the talent on stage. Additionally, the leadership at the organization sometimes gives the impression of being standoffish and unwilling to play, and has a reputation for being late with payments to artists on occasion.

N
SF ballet is widely regarded as one of the top two or top three companies in the United States. They tour to NYC and internationally nearly every year, thus making their audience a huge, international one. They attract big audiences at home and they have a huge, vivid impact on the community through a nationally celebrated dance school.

Organizational Strengths

R
The organization produces a very diverse program calendar every year that incorporates both the most traditional ballet with modern ballet and usually showcases an up and coming choreographer as well.
N
Just like at the Symphony, they have a strong trio of board, artistic, and administrative leadership.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need improved use of TV and DVD, as well as more education for people like me who only sort of "get" what all the traditional dance moves are.

N
Robert Commanday and his colleagues basically created the idea of an on-line reviewing site, to pick up where the Chronicle, Mercury, IJ, Contra Costa Times and Tribune have fallen off the map. Now it's a national model for such enterprises, which are starting up all over the place as the newspapers slowly die off. They simultaneously offer a variety of other services and ways for people to learn more thereby building the audience for the music. They serve to sell SF's classical music community to the rest of the country and the world, helping build SF as an arts tourist destination.

Organizational Strengths

N
It is well regarded by the music cognoscenti.
N
They have a very strong administrative leader in Gessner, who is widely respected in the business. They also have an excellent new calendar collaboration with KDFC-FM.

Areas for Improvement

N
This organization needs greater infrastructure and more marketing, so that more people are aware of them.
N
This is hard: they're still so new and they have set the bar so high for themselves. However, I might go to the site even more often if they tried a classical news aggregation function similar to musicalamerica.com or if they got some bigger name writers.

The more established arts organizations are often taken for granted, and for this reason I call your attention to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. It was the first conservatory in the country to offer a graduate degree program in Chamber Music. It also has a robust continuing education program for children and adults, offering excellent instruction to the artists-of-tomorrow in the Bay Area.

Organizational Strengths

N
The Conservatory has an excellent faculty and brings in the stars of the classical music world for master classes and as visiting professors.

Areas for Improvement

N
As a Conservatory, it still does not have the notoriety of the Northeastern Schools, for example: Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, or Peabody. It is more than a "local" school, and yet it has not positioned itself as a first-rate option among aspiring musicians from around the country.

O
Shawl-Anderson is a teaching institution and a community. Increasingly, it is providing an alternate space for smaller-scale presentations of up-and-coming choreographers, sponsoring their efforts with discounted or free rehearsal space. Despite the limits of smaller studio spaces, the caliber of instruction is high. It is a place where young, professional, and serious amateurs share passion and discipline surrounded by nurturing encouragement. This is the garden from which our future dancers and choreographers will grow.

Organizational Strengths

N
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center has a great deal of support from the community and there is a lot of passion and commitment from the staff. They often are able to utilize community resources to create smart and supportive programming for emerging and established dance artists.
O
The commitment and passion of the staff in recent years has really raised the "performance" of this organization. Class schedule, guest instructors from touring companies, and regular performances have all increased visibility and quality of the institution. The sense of community is strong and inspires great loyalty.

Areas for Improvement

N
They will need to identify ways to diversify the board and utilize it to its potential. Additionally, they could benefit from increased marketing and outreach efforts.
O
They need a larger studio space. Shawl-Anderson has high quality instructors and equally strong dancers coming in for classes, all of whom are limited by the small studios. Classes can sometimes be prohibitively crowded and movement choices are limited by the dimensions.

For a community to have a school devoted to teaching professional musicians, serious students, and jazz aficionados how to play and appreciate jazz is remarkable. It was only begun in 1997 and has grown and flourished during the past 13 years.

Organizational Strengths

F
The Director of the Jazzschool showed great innovation when she wrote a new Bachelor of Arts curriculum that attracted new students and made the whole nonprofit financially sound. Their office and classrooms in the basement of the old Kress Building have become a local community lunch and meeting place that adds culture to the everyday experience.
N
Susan Muscarella, its Founder and Executive Director, is also a jazz pianist. To be a successful woman in the jazz world is an accomplishment in itself; to continue to be a musician and to start a school is boundary-breaking.

Areas for Improvement

F
Their vision is very strong and my only concern is that they will expand too quickly. The innovative new BA curriculum is very strong and is attracting many students. I would encourage them to pace their growth.
N
The Jazzschool does so much. Not only does it provide instruction and opportunities for performance for its students, but it also presents a robust jazz series of performances from well-recognized artists and ensembles. While they do a good job of publicizing their work, the marketplace is crowded with cultural offerings. I would only suggest that they enter more aggressively into the e-marketing arena to reach young people who are accustomed to receiving information electronically.

Art In Action (1 recommendation) Art in Action was started in 1978 by Judy Sleeth, an art teacher, who saw the need for art in education for her own children. Since that time, Judy's idea became Art in Action, a leading in-school program for arts education-now serving 27,000 students! In 2009, Art in Action launched an on-line program and their services are now potentially available worldwide. They continue to evolve and discover new ways to reach all audiences, including homeschooled children. They also offer adult art classes and a summer camp for kids.

Their leadership is first rate and their "fan club" is ever growing. I just came back from their annual "Atelier d'Artistes" luncheon and fundraiser, where internationally recognized sculptor, Bruce Beasley, was a featured speaker. Over 250 people attended the afternoon event that involved artist demonstrations, an art class for children, a silent auction, and a live fundraiser. Their website and marketing is very professional and high quality, as well.

It relies on a small staff that have a calling for what they do.

Areas for Improvement

R
The support of artists by other artists is a great ethic but one that is hard to sustain financially, logistically, and creatively. This is a grassroots concept that needs support and fuel to keep it going, both in terms of exhibition labor but also in terms of the civic and policy labor required to make sure that the Art Murmur cooperative is not "gentrified" out of existence.
Arts Council of Napa Valley (1 recommendation) During the past five years, ACNV did its first cultural plan, raised the visibility, and changed the political and cultural awareness of the arts in Napa Valley. They have an amazingly dedicated core of community board members who work closely and supportively with a young and energetic staff and volunteers. They have secured new talent and engaged the loyalty and commitment of a new generation of artists who are working hard to create a better climate for their and others' creative work in this rural and formerly conservative community.

Areas for Improvement

N
The unexpected departure of their Executive Director to a more lucrative job and established organization indicates the fragility of what has been accomplished and the threat to this important catalyst. The acting director is an artist who, while much loved, has no real experience outside this agency; and the board seems afraid to make a financial investment in hiring someone new. Despite a lot of energetic initiatives, there is the danger of burnout and stagnation unless support for mentoring and development of their very good ideas and initiatives is found.

The leadership has been with the organization's founding in the early 1980s, but has also brought in younger people to work in editing and production so that the next generation has a stake in the press. The wide range of authors and communities represented is phenomenal.

Areas for Improvement

F
Aunt Lute does not have as high a profile in the San Francisco publishing community as it should. In part that might be due to a lack of promotion savvy. It used to do more public programs but has cut back because of staffing issues.

Organizational Strengths

N
BBB has an award-winning Artistic Director, Brooke Knight. Brooke Knight has been involved in the arts since doing radio shows at the age of seven. In her artistic journey she was involved in theatre at Aragon High School in San Mateo, earned a Masters degree in Psychology, married her master teacher from theatre and toured with him, worked as a Psychology teacher back at Aragon, received another degree in Counseling and served as the head of the Guidance Department at Aragon. All in all she spent 32 years at Aragon, the last 10 years while working a second job back in theatre, her true passion. Brooke has been at Broadway by the Bay since 1989, first as a director and then serving as Artistic Director since 1992. Brooke describes her job as being “responsible for everything on the stage, including sets, casting, hiring, orchestra, back stage, etc”. She directs one play a year and scouts talent for four Broadway by the Bay productions a year. In Brooke’s 17 year tenure as Artistic Director of Broadway by the Bay, the company has received innumerable nominations and awards from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards. Brooke’s directorial talents have earned nominations from BATCC for her productions of 42nd Street, Sweet Charity, Jesus Christ Superstar, Singing in the Rain and Camelot. Her production of Guys and Dolls won five Bay Area Critics Awards, including ‘Best Direction’ and ‘Best Entire Production’. In 2000 Brooke received the Bravo! Award for her outstanding contribution to the performing arts. Brooke Knight has been an inspiration to thousands of Bay Area students, and seems most proud of the success her students have found working on or behind the stage. BBB's marketing materials and billboards have been very high quality and definitely put San Mateo County on the map in terms of high-quality musical performances.

Areas for Improvement

N
This is a very high quality professional performing arts organization. It is unfortunate that they need to operate out of a high school facility. About four years ago, BBB was interested in developing its own performing arts center at Coyote Point Park. I believe the land could be made available if the funding was available. Coyote Point Park and Marina has the potential to become a "mini Golden Gate Park" if the right leadership and funding could be identified. I do not believe it would be a duplication of services. Having lived in the Bay Area most of my life, I understand that "Peninsula people" are Peninsula people and "City People" are city people. Neither seem to make the drive to attend performances outside of their general vicinity. Having a new eco-friendly performing arts center and hopefully a new museum and sculpture garden at Coyote Point would be a dream come true for many of the arts advocates in this county who have donated up to 40+ years of their lives to promoting arts and culture in San Mateo County. Let's make it happen! :) We're hopeful and ready for a change! :)

CAAE is staffed by two well respected and experienced arts education champions, Executive Director Laurie Schell and Policy Director Joe Landon, the latter based in Sacramento because of the importance of having a presence in the halls of state government. CAAE has recently adopted a new governance structure which separates out the governing board from an advisory board that can connect CAAE with funding and potential partnerships.

Their facilities definitely need improving. For instance, sound-proofing and air-conditioning would be welcome additions. The director could use more reliable (i.e. paid) help.

They need to strengthen their position as one of the leading museums of San Francisco, in the same class as SFMOMA, Asian Art Museum, De Young, Legion, etc. They should make their amenities more widely known, such as onsite parking and a cafe, so they are perceived as more accessible.
Coro Hispano de San Francisco (1 recommendation) Coro Hispano and the Instituto Pro Musica de California has had a long commitment to bringing music of Spanish speaking cultures to mainstream concert going audiences and beyond. Colonial music and music from the renaissance to modern times from the Americas is central to their repertoire. Creative Growth (1 recommendation) Creative Growth continues to quietly and consistently bridge a specific form of arts education and studio practice, geared exclusively for adult artists with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities, into the vanguard visual art community. The result is a blend of hyperlocal, with impact on the lives of 100 adult artists each year, and regional, national, and international impact in the art world. It's a model art education organization that blends direct service with exhibition programs, publishing, retail, and community engagement. They do all this while maintaining a signature space that has endured the vagaries of urban revitalization, a safe and respectful environment for their artists, and a critically active milieu for gallery attendees.

Organizational Strengths

N
The new project "Creative Growth For Everybody" seeks to create financial independence for the studio's artists through the distribution of their work in cultural industries, such as fashion merchandising. The potential impact for this is far-reaching. Since 2008 they have made concrete efforts to place their curatorial vision on an international stage, for example with the Paris Galerie Impaire and the 2009 Berlin show, scaffolding their importance in the ongoing global dialogue about outsider art.

Areas for Improvement

N
Creative Growth paced its organizational growth to weather both the perpetual tough terrain of arts funding and the recent economic decline, but with its aggressive increases in contributions since 2007, how does it plan to use these resources? Expansion of services? The cohort it serves directly remains small. There were 100 served for $500K in 2007 and $550k in 2008. Institutional infrastructure with staffing or facility? Is there a research partnership that would lift the successes and models of Creative Growth to new audiences and policymakers?

El Teatro Campesino (1 recommendation) Obviously this organization has a famed history in the Post-Civil Rights arts movements, similar to the SF Mime Troupe, and its founder Luis Valdez is a creator and visionary of great stature. It was a first of many things within the Chicano/Latino Arts & Cultural landscape and has had great impact beyond its own community. However, I recommend this organization for how it has weathered through its activist and grassroots beginnings to continue to attract and train some of the best young theater talent while producing the highest of quality work with very little means. This is with a very minimal role of Luis Valdez in more recent years. They continue to do Luis' canonical works, such Zoot Suit, La Pastorela and La Virgen de Tepayac, yet they are also are doing new works written by the extended Valdez clan and adaptations of classical works that maintain their political and social relevance to today's generation of Chicano/Latino audiences.

The young talent that they attract and can support with very little financial resources in their pastoral, and affordable, San Juan Bautista, California, has produced theater artists that then go on to participate in the larger Bay Area theater scene. I have seen names of artists who started or spent significant time at El Teatro Campesino go on to act, direct, or create new theater in other Bay Area venues and form their own companies in other communities. These well trained, committed artists are also working in film and video and are taking the traditions of "Teatro Chicano" to a new level in this digital age.

Areas for Improvement

R
I often want to see more collaboration and presentation of El Teatro Campesino shows in Bay Area venues outside of San Juan Bautista. Theater patrons deserve to see this great work. That said, I appreciate that some of the success of ETC has been the almost magical place that is their home. The success has to do with the company's ability to isolate and protect a way of making theater outside the demanding constraints of the market. As a result, my comment for improvement here is with a good deal of reservation as well.
Filoli Center (1 recommendation) Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. Their concert series, art exhibits, and floral shows are outstanding and their gardens are truly exceptional and historically accurate. Forbes recently named Filoli "One of the Most Beautiful Gardens in America". Annual visitors to Filoli reach over 100,000. Filoli is also a favorite filming destination. Warren Beatty starred in "Heaven Can Wait" and Filoli credits him for restoring the mansion to its historical state. For the filming, he made sure that the mansion was decorated and furnished according to the correct time period. Without his stepping forward, Filoli could possibly just offer its gardens rather than both mansion and the splendid gardens for public enjoyment. "The Wedding Planner" was another film shot at Filoli. The show "Dynasty" also used the facade of the mansion for the opening credits.

Lucy Tolmach, Director of Horticulture, has recently celebrated her 32nd year of working at Filoli. Under her loving guidance, Filoli’s gardens have been historically preserved for the enjoyment of 100,000 visitors annually. Her expertise, knowledge, and creative skills keep alive the tradition of preserving and educating the public in the arts of nature and garden design, making Filoli a prime example of the “Golden Age of Country Gardens”. In other words, Filoli is considered the best early 20th century garden because Lucy remains committed to the ideals of Filoli and keeps the vision originated by the Bourns and Mrs. Roth gloriously alive. To preserve the historic aspect of Filoli gardens, Lucy has her staff research, recreate and plant samples of annuals that are true to their original form and not what they have evolved to in modern times. She designs the palette of the garden beds to complement the numerous events and fundraisers throughout the year. Lucy is also the visionary for Filoli’s Holiday Traditions new theme and decorations each year. She is beloved by staff and volunteers and is likely to credit the group and team for the success of Filoli before herself. The curatorial leader Tom Rogers is outstanding and the public relations associate Christina Syrett is very connected to all things media. Their entire team is a joy to work with. Employing horticulture as an art form, Lucy Tomlach has contributed to the beauty and art in our local community for almost 32 years, orchestrating a yearly floral tapestry of colors, textures, and horticultural experiences for the enjoyment of the fortunate citizens of San Mateo County. How fortunate we are that Lucy Tomlach took root and bloomed here in our own back yard!

Organizational Strengths

N
Melissa Hillman, Impact's artistic director, has a crystal-clear understanding of Impact's role in the theatre ecosystem. She is active on advisory committees on the state of the field, and advocates for the importance of small, "edgy" theatres as gateways to a life of arts patronage. Impact also has an outsized reputation because of an incredibly strong and polished graphic identity. They are proof that a small theatre doesn't have to look small.

Areas for Improvement

N
Impact functions outside of a mindset of "growing is good," which is hard. It is a legitimate choice to stay small and a good argument can be made that their impact wouldn't be as great were they to grow. However, I wish that their model of home-grown, local, and accessible work were able to be replicated in other communities in need of that stepping stone in the Bay Area.

The interface of the website, the main public portal for the organization, could be redesigned or made more appealing and usable. Explicit partnerships with local community organizations would also be a boon, benefitting not just locals but the community at large. It is their consistency of delivery along with creativity and involvement of the larger Marin community that are the strengths I am aware of. They also have a program that brings isolated populations to there program for a full day's experience. Many of those participants have never even been up the mountain that dominates Marin.

Areas for Improvement

N
It might be helpful to have a more thoughtful approach to choosing the musical of the year so it is suitable for all ages and all who attend.

OYC trains youth to learn and perform a varied repertoire, supporting the Oakland community’s rich artistic diversity by providing community-based music education programs that reflect the cultural richness of our city. OYC youth develop self-confidence, a knowledge of the music of several cultures, and a lifelong love of music. In many countries and cultures around the world, there is a single word for singing, playing music, and dancing. These things always go together, and are not learned or performed separately they way they generally are in the U.S. OYC is moving towards teaching and performing these disciplines together as frequently as possible, in order to more accurately reflect the cultures whose music we are teaching.

Areas for Improvement

N
They need to go back to the rapport that Nancy Glaze encouraged. It is nonsense to have the grants employees be generalists. They need to re-establish direct contacts for the arts so it can go back to the way it was. I liked keeping in touch with Nancy Glaze and her staff, letting them know honestly and candidly about how it is going. I met with them for about 20 minutes each year and also could call them up. Now, they pride themselves on being generalists and don't want organizations to have a contact person within Packard. This is really a huge missed opportunity for honest dialogue.

Organizational Strengths

N
Marketing, leadership, and finances are some of their strengths.

Areas for Improvement

N
This organization has become too insular. It has a suspect policy regarding auditions and turnover of qualified orchestra staff. To my knowledge, there are several chairs that are filled by musicians that have never auditioned, even though union organizations such as this one are required to post and hold regular auditions. Philharmonia is known to sidestep this issue by holding auditions and then claiming that no one has passed sufficiently to second or third stages of the audition when current staff do not pass in blind auditions. They then retain "favorites" until the next audition period. This is viewed by a large part of the community as dishonest and secretive.

They are a total surprise nestled in a neighborhood. Everyone who comes to attend a show or perform at the Poppy falls in love with the place. The leadership, Todd Brown, the founder/guru/director invites anyone who wants to help and then he gets out of their way and lets them! This organization retains a focus on the CREATIVE and not on being an institution.

Areas for Improvement

F
They need more funders to recognize how much art value per dollar they generate. They could monetize more aspects of their programming in a mission-suitable way, for example in addition to charging low admission for tickets, they could record their performances and sell those recordings. If they owned their own space and they could produce noise late at night!
Rock Paper Scissors Collective (1 recommendation) An emerging arts organization (perhaps still seeking its own 501(c)3 status, as they were most recently sponsored by 21 Grand Arts Group), they began as a retail and gallery presence for arts entrepreneurs but quickly found their niche providing connections for emerging artists working in community settings. RPS' all-volunteer, do-it-yourself, collectivist culture is a refreshing entry into the Bay Area arts ecosystem. They are discovering new ways of organizing cultural work by using hybrid economic models and radical inclusiveness, growing their ranks and reach person by person, while building a critical reputation within the established, institutional art community.

Areas for Improvement

N
RPS faces a rubicon with its organizational model: for-profit? nonprofit? hybrid? Yet their desire to grow their arts-based youth development programs is authentic and timely. If the retail operations of the gallery and store aren't sufficient to underwrite this work, is converting to a nonprofit and seeking foundation support the answer? RPS is at great stage for investment in strategic development, technical assistance, and community inquiry that can take its ideas and ideals to scale.

Organizational Strengths

As this organization went through incredible transitions, both in leadership, when their executive director passed away, and in location, when they moved from 1246 Folsom to downtown, they kept a connection with their membership throughout it all. They use their space wisely and host a fair amount of public programming for a small staff.

Areas for Improvement

O
Camerawork could work harder to reach a younger audience. Their fundraisers, through the auction and portrait party, have not changed in model or scope in too long. They should shake things up and invite some new ideas. They could do the same with their fine print program. Why not do a print on a skateboard, for example like Ari Macropolis did for Printed Matter, or something like that? These kinds of fundraising changes could break open Camerawork to a new generation of collector, audience, and artist.

Organizational Strengths

F
Current leadership of the SFCO developed a plan several years ago to provide free concerts in good venues with an eye toward developing audiences. To help offset the loss of ticket revenue, SFCO created a membership program. During the first few members, membership income surpassed tickets revenues from previous years. Musical quality is on par with other regional orchestras in this region.

Areas for Improvement

They have a broad-based steering committee of members of arts education, arts, and culture organizations from across the Bay Area.

Areas for Improvement

N
They have inconsistent and low resources, leadership that is not clear on how to push the agenda forward, and no clearly defined direction or strategy for growth.
The Attitudinal Healing Connection of Oakland (1 recommendation) This organization is dedicated to healing racism as a life-threatening force within Oakland and in particular, West Oakland. Organizational Strengths

R
They have a strength in their principals of attitudinal healing and other techniques for engaging dialogue across cultural divides. They have on-going drumming circles open to the public that I believe are free. They are champions of their community--building bridges between West Oakland and other areas. The leadership is dedicated, passionate, and committed and is well-known and respected, particularly in West Oakland.

Areas for Improvement

R
Their leadership and staffing is primarily family and insular. They could benefit from a diversity of expertise, people, and perspectives. This would allow them to take a more open and flexible approach to their programming.

The Museum of the African Diaspora (1 recommendation) Many people are not aware of the global impact of the dissemination of people and ideas that originated in Africa. It examines what it means to be African in a contemporary context and what it has meant to be of African descent living outside of Africa.

Many people are not aware of the global impact of the dissemination of people and ideas that originated in Africa. It examines what it means to be African in a contemporary context and what it has meant to be of African descent living outside of Africa.

Organizational Strengths

O
MoAD is viewed as the premier African American cultural organization in the Bay Area. It has been well received by well placed individuals, corporations, foundation, and government funding agencies.

Areas for Improvement

O
MoAD needs to expand its staff to include more African and African American scholars if it is to be viewed as other than a social space or exhibition space. As a museum, it must, through its website or an information clearinghouse, be what its name suggests. There should be live links with cultural groups and individual artists of the African diaspora. Their focus should be on providing a vehicle for their members to connect in a meaningful way with artists throughout the world. The technology is there. And for a museum that does not collect it should then make the world's collections available. For the future survival and well being of the museum, I suggest that they seriously consider the need to acquire an additional satellite site where they can program the space for more than 200 people at a time. Further, they can ask themselves, why would someone across the globe want to be a member? If they are truly the Museum of the African Diaspora, more diasporian Africans will connect with the mission and support the growth and stabilization of the museum.
The Volunteer Center (1 recommendation) Their Board Match event does more to develop the long-term capacity of performing arts organizations than any other single event. They do this by making the business case year round to leading San Francisco corporations that they need to groom their staff by encouraging them to be involved in local nonprofit volunteer and board service.

Areas for Improvement

They can be a bit risk-averse in terms of trying new things.

Organizational Strengths

N
The Thick House, as it is called, does cutting edge theatre with little regard for commerciality. The company is committed to political and social issues of considerable controversy and they are quite invoked politically in their immediate community.

Areas for Improvement

N
There seem to be marketing budget restraints. They are very accomplished at internet marketing but have to depend on word of mouth and internet activity. I would also like to get a sense of them folding more designers into programming from other groups.

Organizational Strengths

In addition to providing top-quality musical instruction to disadvantaged youth, YMP provides extensive family support and academic tutoring to its students. Support for transportation to classes is also provided. Virtually all graduates of the program go on to higher education. Finally, Executive Director Daisy Newman is a powerhouse.

Areas for Improvement

F
YMP is always working to increase the quality of instruction by increasing pay for its music teachers. This tends to add pressure on building an ongoing donor campaign to increase revenues.
United Nations Association Film Festival (1 recommendation) This organization has been around and tied with Stanford for well over a decade. Word for Word Performing Arts Company (1 recommendation) Easily one of the best and most unique theater companies in the country, Word for Word, took its inspiration from several other companies, one in Seattle and one in New York, and then did it better than anyone else. By taking short works of fiction and adapting them to the stage without changing a word, Word for Word creates living literature, fully staged theatrical works that also provide insight into the work of some extraordinary writers.

Organizational Strengths

O
The collective that runs Word for Word has developed a creative system that results in outstanding shows, year after year. They are always trying new things, new writers, new wrinkles, and yet their core process remains the same because it is dependent on deep collaboration between director, actors, and designers. The company also employs an effective outreach program that engages other theater companies around the country, and around the world.

Areas for Improvement

O
Honestly, I can't think of anything that would improve Word for Word. Their biggest challenge is to maintain the superior quality of their work, which is challenge enough.
Youth In Arts (1 recommendation) Youth in Arts has supported performing and visual arts education for children and youth in an era of minimal arts opportunities in Marin public schools. "Til Dawn", its awarding winning teen a capella group, has provided outstanding training and performance opportunities for high school musicians. The fabulous voices continue to inspire young and old audiences alike. The agency has also raised public awareness about the arts and provided both high quality and community visual arts opportunities with its annual Italian Street Painting Festival. The Festival is a tool for showcasing high quality art and mentorship, and it demonstrates the power of arts education. The Festival is one of the best public arts festivals in the country. Organizational Strengths

N
Youth in Arts has solid leadership, in terms of both its management and board. The marketing and operational ability for its Italian Street Painting Festival are particularly impressive, along with the agency's ability to deploy 1,000 volunteers to produce this premiere weekend event.

Areas for Improvement

N
Fundraising is especially challenging because of the ever-shrinking budgets of the public and private schools that Youth in Arts serves. YIA also needs assistance in terms of its ability to communicate the importance of arts learning for all children and youth.

In just five years, YMR has gone from being a start-up with an innovative approach, to being a nationally-recognized and sought-after partner in the arts and youth development field. Their positive trajectory is leading them towards more local, national, and international collaborations, which can be attributed to their visionary leadership that understands the power of partnerships.

Areas for Improvement

F
The founder recently moved on, and the Program Director stepped in as the new Executive Director, continuing to develop her own leadership style. Any leadership transition requires patience and a strong focus on organizational mission.

Areas for Improvement

The Luggage Store needs a support staff. They are lacking significant infrastructure of non-profit management, web and communications, exhibition scheduling, and archiving. My dream would be to go and work for them and make all of this happen for this place. It is that special.
